Good, we need more like you, resist the pull of the service “Industry”.
Much like trying to stop smoking. Will power required and realising you are actually shortening your life.
Do the walk of life.
There are two types of low impact martial arts that are similar -
Tai Chi, where you do a series of short movements and join them into a continuous sequence called a Form
Qi Gong (qi is pronounced chee) where you do a few movements but repeat them several times
Qi gong is perhaps easier to do if you are starting out on your own, but finding a class will help you with company and encouragement as well as proper instruction
Both of these have a philosophy/mumbo jumbo aspect to them which you can adopt or ignore as you wish, and just treat them as straightforward exercises
Although they’re slow and low impact, at the end of a session I definitely feel as though I’ve done some exercise
I used to be very fond of sticky buns, junk food, and booze, and my weight had crept up to about 96 or 97 kg, but I decided to do something about it
With exercise and a change of diet my weight is now about 82 or 83 kg; my target is 80kg
More importantly, I have gone off junk food and booze
Now instead of slumping in a chair with a packet of biscuits or a glass or two of wine, I do a bit of TC/QG and have a cup of tea, and I’m happy enough
The hardest part of losing weight is not actually losing the weight, it is making the decision to lose weight
Besides a test for diabetes it would be worth having your blood pressure checked; a pharmacy can usually do both of these
There are several YouTube videos about Tai chi and Qi Gong, here’s one, but there are many others, just Search away
Just remember a very good observation for motivation … A second in the mouth = a lifetime on the hips.
A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.
Another one is “taste makes waist”
Depending on where you live, it could be a lack of one VIP mineral, known as SELENIUM.
In Scotland, it’s lacking in the soil. Back in 2020, my thyroid gland went crazy, swelled up, nearly blocking my throat. Hypothyroidism followed. By the time we got through for appointment, pandemic happened, appointment was cancelled. Darn!
I got in touch with old work colleagues, got answers and help. Got selenium tablets 200 micrograms from Holland and Barrett.
Lost, two stones so far equivalent of 28 lbs. Feel much better, thyroid is back to normal and I’m fitting my old clothes as pre-weight gain.
Just about 10lbs left to go, then I’ll be changing to multivitamins with iodine, iron and selenium to maintain balance of all my health problems.
Never got to see GP they’re too busy, but I feel much better.
Seek medical advice please but selenium deficiency might be a large cause. Cheers!
I too am overweight, because I’m old and move very little I
am succeeding in at least not gaining more by keeping track of
my eating on Free Calorie Counter, Diet & Exercise Journal | MyFitnessPal
I will never be slim again but at least my coffin won’t be too
heavy to lift.
I always thought “kitchen pickers wear bigger knickers.” Was a good one.
Did the smoking quitting 17 years ago. I barely drink so that wouldn’t bother me either. I have been known to go on All Inclusive holidays and not have an alcoholic drink!
I just love food. Cooking it, trying new recipes etc. I am racking my brains to think of things that I love which are good for me. Salmon and mangoes so far!
Go on, just have one nip.
I used to have oats for breakfast till I read that to lose weight the serving should be 28g of dry oats thats about two rounded desert spoons… and you should cook it with skimmed milk…a very measly serving
Now you done gone made me sad. Joking
Swimming and pool walking is a great way to exercise. Also there are lots of exercises you can do in the pool as well. The water makes it so easy. Check out You Tube, lots of ideas on there.
I am at the pool 5 days a week (3 at the moment ) and I have quickly built up strength in my damaged joints again since my accident. I used to swim 50 lengths a day and am back up to 30, I swim one way and walk back. We don’t have a deep end it’s all one depth, I also do exercises at the end of the pool, after a rest. As for diet food, just cut out the crap and don’t overfill your dinner plate.
Hi Bretrick
Plenty of willpower that’s what’s needed to lose weight.
Along with lots of fruit , veg, exercise and water.
I am not a meat eater however if you are …small lean portions.
To work and keep the weight off there should be a permanent change to your diet
My will power is rather weak at the moment. Heck, I have been eating junk food for so long now, developed a real sweet tooth.
But I know what I have to do, when will I start, that is a question only I can answer.
One day I will make the decision to make huge changes.
Hopefully within the next month.
It’s no good keep putting it off for another day, start tomorrow and carry on meaning it or you’ll never start. You know it makes sense
We have not had sweets, chocolate, biscuits, crisps or cakes for 5 days.just got back from a 2 mile walk with neighbour who also is always battling her weight.
We discussed weight problems and we agree that at our age most people eat as part of their social life. I meet friends for coffee and a cake or sausage roll, go out with husband for lunch sometimes, afternoon tea is a real treat for friends birthdays, about once every 2 months we have fish and chips. Then there are special events like weddings, christenings, Coronations!!
I eat 3 meals a day and never pick in between.
The other thing is if you pop out for a coffee but fancy something small there is nothing. It’s sandwiches, paninis, scones or sausage rolls usuallly. If there’s anything healthy like a salad then they want about £10 for it!
I think it helps to plan ahead, so that your efforts are to be started on a particular day - often the best is the first of whatever month is next.
Another point: Just as with giving up smoking, tell EVERYBODY (including us)…everybody you know, to talk to, that you’re going to start attacking your weight situation.
