So difficult to lose weight as I age

Being overweight also has a detrimental effect on ones self esteem. Embarrassment, frustration, feeling bloated, feeling tired.
Many days I feel fat and that saddens me. I ceased all intimate relations because I am embarrassed in my nakedness.
So I have the desire and motivation to lose weight but have I the discipline?

Here are, hopefully, a few encouraging comments -

It’s not easy, but if you stick to a diet & exercise, gradually your tastes change, and you have less desire for sweet food, large meals & portions, and junk food - honest!

There is a sort of combined or rolling effect - as you change things, the more you can do and the easier it becomes, so the more you can do … and so you can do more … and so on

But don’t think of this change as a diet, think of starting a new way of living & eating – yes, it’s a cliche, but it works

You’re still a youngster and as you age further you will find the weight will gradually reduce and then it will be hard to maintain a healthy weight. I’m in the 80+ category and I can honestly say it is difficult for me to keep my weight stable. My appetite fell to almost zero after 70ish, so I have to almost force myself to eat at the allotted times. My wife is exactly the same so it’s definitely an age thing.

Hi Bretrick, welcome to the forum

I don’t think losing weight as we get older is any different really, we just have to eat less and move more, same as everyone else

But suppose we do get less active and it hurts more to do what we do!

Have you tried eating less carbs? This really does work for me quite well

I don’t go full keto!

But I find having eggs, ham, tomatoes, veg etc for breakfast instead of cereal or toast for brekkie, having salad or soup instead of sandwich’s for lunch, avoiding pasta and potatoes with my main meal and cutting down on puddings works for me. Also drinking water, not fruit juice

Exercise you have to find something you enjoy. I love to swim and it’s good because you can exercise with no wear and tear on your joints. Also walking

I go to Tai Chi and do a bit of home yoga

And then I have some”fun” exercises I do when I have a spare ten minutes. Hula hoop, juggling, TikTok dances, stair press ups, wall Pilates, the staircase exercise challenge, the exercise bike!

I try to fit in 3 “fun” 10 minute sessions a day, just anything you can to get you moving. When my mum was alive we used to do chair dancing, that was a good laugh

Good luck if you do decide to lose weight, you can do it! :+1:

Water is actually a great food substitute. Obviously depends on your kidney function, but can really fill you up between meals.

The other tip is to cut out processed simple carbs (not easy). Anything that takes your body more energy to digest in order to obtain the energy from the food source is good. e.g not a chocolate bar. The good thing about this is that you can eat lots of complex carbs and protein (kidney function caveat again) and you will still lose weight if the quick fix cream cake and pizza, pasta are left off the menu.

Thank you. I have not tried anything to lose weight seriously so far.
Might be time to get serious and start somewhere.

There is a YT channel I follow Dr. Eric Berg DC

It’s very informative and not only for weight loss.

Read up about intermittent fasting and low carb diet. It works for me.

Physical activity is important too. Find something that you enjoy doing.

See a doctor first. Make sure you do not have cholesterol, hypertension or diabetes.

Discipline is always difficult.
Good luck :023:

You can’t play guessing games with the diabetes thing…you need to know, feller! You need to be diagnosed! That would be a good time, also, to ask for help from the same medical professional. If you’ve posted about it, it’s bothering you enough to ask for medical help - the medical profession WANT you to ask them about it!

Thank you. :slightly_smiling_face:

I can recommend some “walking workouts” on youtube and “fabulous 50s” playlists - you just walk for 30 seconds, then do some other form of exercise for 30s. As for dieting - try some vegetarian recipes, to kickstart a diet of more veggies and fewer carbs. And drink lots and lots of water. For regular exercise, see if your local council run “health walks”, or see if there are other walking groups where you live - buy some walking boots and aim to walk at least three times a week and do the youtube workouts every morning. Good luck

One way to loose weight if married is to get a divorce.

Thank you for your advice.
Time I started taking control before my body tells me - “enough of this silliness”

Have seen the Nurse Practitioner today who says I am pre diabetic and have been since 2015. She says it’s CARBS that makes us fat and recommends Professor Roy Taylor’s book Life Without Diabetes which I bought some time ago but never read! Better get reading. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Simple carbs definitely do. There are good carbs that release energy slowly. Having porridge in the morning for example.

Having “Oats” at night would probably promote weight loss!

I am going to start eating porridge for breakfast.

Just make sure you put the slow release energy to good use!!
