Windows 10 icon pop up

I think I’ve decided to do the same, if it ain’t broke…

Do it, do it, just think of the learning curve and the hours spent getting to understand what it’s all about.
Great if you have nothing better to do.
You can always go back to your earlier version.

You can go back as I did but now every time I have an update it includes windows 10 and refuses to just update my 8.1 !

They are not doing anymore updates for 8.1 I think or was it 7?

I am still getting them for 8.1 my husband is still on 7 and not had any for a while.

I am still getting updates for 8.1 too but I know it won’t be supported indefinatly

Exactly my take on it.

I will leave well alone for now.

I am still getting updates for W7, had 25 this evening when I turned the pc off to go to Tesco.:shock::confused::smiley:

I updated to W10 a few days ago, once I deleted all the stuff I don’t ( will never) use, it’s running great … I much to prefer it to W8, much easier to navigate for me, I went to the W10 help pages and found them so helpful, I’m no expert by any means and use just the basics but honestly find this very easy

My continuing story win 10. As I mentioned earlier, that I could not access my mail by clicking the mail box. So I went onto the Microsoft help forum. I explained the problem.
I got an answer from one of their ‘experts’, to access the check the computer and find the problem programe.
(You will like this bit I promise you.)
I ran the links, and it did not find any faults. Of course it didn’t. Because the programe was for windows 7 and 8.1
Did this sort out your problem I was asked. My reply… “Censored”. :075::062::027::038::018::041::024:
I have found an alternative way to access my mail, but I ain’t telling MS.

Sounds about right they know less than we do and they are the professionals

Patsy, do not on any account download Windows 10 !!!
I spent hours watching my screen as it downloaded it onto my laptop, Everything went fine until it finished. A message came up saying Windows 10 had been downloaded successfully. This was followed by a message saying “Just tweaking a few things” After about 30 minutes of it buffering, another message appeared saying “sorry, this appears to be taking a bit longer than thought”. Two hours later I am still waiting ! Absolutely nothing. The next morning. I turned my laptop on, Up appears this very impressive picture of looking out to a beach and rocks from inside a cave. I proceeded to my desktop, All seems okay but wait a minute, where is my curser??? oh, there it is, up the top of the screen, completely and utterly frozen ! I tried everything to get it to work, I turned the laptop off, on again, back to desktop, curser moved for about 10 seconds, then froze again on me. Several times this happened before I had to give up.

I phoned Microsoft and arranged a time for a techno to t. helephone me and show me what on earth had gone wrong and why was my curser freezing on me every time. He asks me am I using a touchpad or a mouse? I told him its a new Toshiba laptop and it has a touchpad. He then informed me that I need a mouse cable for him to continue and fix the driver !!! well tough - I haven’t used a mouse for years and no longer have one !! his answer - well I can’t fix it without the mouse cable !! and we then have to terminate the call.

So there you are Patsy, I’ve gone from Windows 8 which worked perfectly to this new state of the art Windows 10 which is utter crap ! doesn’t work, has left me with a useless laptop and having to use hubby’s. I will have to go out and buy a mouse, I don’t even know if my laptop can use a mouse! I’m a silver surfer, I know how to do basic things on the computer but this is getting ridiculous.
I wish to goodness I had left well alone. A friend has told me that a lot people are having problems with Windows 10 being downloaded from Microsoft.

Take my advice everyone, please leave well alone !! :-(:frowning:

Mary I am cross posting this post from a member on our sister site who also has a Toshiba…

Don’t download it, my new laptop was rendered useless for two days after this was downloaded. It’s a known problem that they only tell you about after it’s downloaded. Apparently Asus and Toshiba laptops will have an inoperable touchpad caused simply by downloading windows 10. Why is there no warning? They claim it’s simple to fix yeah, try navigating round the screen with no curser. Luckily my son’s friend Glen came to the rescue and uninstalled it. I think I’ll stick to 8.1 as I never understood why it was so disliked any way. Think 10 will cause a riot if it causes everyone problems like mine.

Meg, thank you very much for that information. I am so furious with Microsoft. I feel like telephoning them and complaining. What made it ten times worse was the technical expert that telephoned me was an American and honestly, I was almost pulling my hair out with frustration talking to him. He spoke like a robot (he could well have been). I swear it was just like talking to a wall !! I actually had to say to him at one point after failing miserably trying to get him to say anything other than “you need a mouse cable”
This was basically how most of the conversation went before ending it as I said above :

after complete silence for about 20 seconds which is a long time on the phone :
me - Hello, are you still there?" silence
me again, “Hello, are you still there?”
him - “Yes”,
me - Could you please help me and tell me what caused my curser to freeze during download of Windows 10 and how are you going to fix it? silence
monotone voice says “you need a mouse cable for me to fix the drivers” silence,
me, I haven’t got a mouse cable, what else can we do?
him - “yes” silence.
me hello, are you there?" silence -
me again - “hello! are you still there? please answer my question?” silence,
him “you need a mouse cable or I can’t fix it”

Aarrgghh ! was he reading from a manual and a script ???
I had to say something to him in the end (and I have never been this rude to anyone ever in my life prior to this conversation but as I said, by this time I was almost pulling my hair out with frustration)
me - Why won’t you answer my questions? forgive me saying this and I don’t wish to appear rude but truthfully It’s like talking to a brick wall !!!
him - Like I said mam, you need a mouse cable".
me - defeated, deflated, demoralised and depressed - “Thankyou, I’m afraid I will be following this up with a complaint to Microsoft. I’m hanging up now because we are getting nowhere with you helping me with any useful information or technnical help”.
him = “Thank you for using Microsoft !!”

Honestly Meg, I felt so down after that conversation but now you have told me what you have, I will probably have much more luck by asking one of my techno savvy grandsons if he can try the same with mine. Me? when it comes to fixing anything to do with computers I am like a tumbleweed blowing in the wind !! absolutely clueless !

Very grateful for that valuable information. Thanks again.

shroppy xx

With new windows versions, we are the ginny pigs. I realised this years ago as all the new versions have problems.
Some people like myself don’t mind finding the problems and reporting them to MS.
That is why there will always be updates.
Others, wait until the problems are sorted before downloading new versions.
It is always if possible to have a backup system to fall back on.
I recently bought a USB mouse off eBay for £3 ish, (don’t like wifi ones) works OK on my new Asus.

Shroppy - I feel for you x
Thank you for the warning, I decided I would not download and wait till I get a new computer with windows 10 on it rather than download …
Hopefully a long way off !

Windows 10 is superb !
Anyone having problems, probably had problems with other versions too methinks.

Not for everyone Malcolm - they should be clear before you venture into it, unfair - misleading - underhand

I wouldn’t know malcolm. My laptop is new and had Windows 8 on it, Never had a problem since I bought it. I’ve been looking through the manual at repair and restore but it says if I do then it will revert to the Windows 7 version - which personally I would love it to as much preferred it to 8.
I’ll get my grandson to see if he can fix this frozen curser driver that the download has caused and if he can’t solve it I will just have to take my laptop to the repair shop to have it fixed.

Shroppy. If you take it to the repair shop, what would it cost? More than the cost of this mouse that I got.
It’s always handy to have one. With a mouse you could cure the problem yourself or your grandson can.

I think it’s not so much that Windows 10 is bad. It’s more that the computer, the system and the general condition of the system being upgraded cannot be catered for by the upgrade process.

A computer, new or old, may have glitches and/or many combinations of hardware and software. It could be all but impossible for an upgrade process to cater for all of these factors. I reckon this is why the upgrade process goes OK for some but not for others.

I think, once the computer has been through the upgrade process, it’s best to clean install the whole thing and start afresh if any problems exist. The upgrade process will have profiled the computer, so when doing a clean installation, no key numbers are needed. Just skip any stages that ask for it and the installation comes up as activated. When the OS is running, start installing your programs.

This will be too much hassle for most. If it is more than anyone would be prepared to do, it could be best not to upgrade but wait until ‘new computer’ time, when it will come with Windows 10 installed. If not wanting to wait, be prepared for the above.

Microsoft provide a Media Creation Tool for after a computer has been through the upgrade process. I can’t guaranteee how others will get on with using it but the process worked for me. I think it gives a better system than upgrading does. Make a disk image backup first, just in case.
