Win 10 worse than a blasted, pushy door to door salesman

When I opened up my computer this morning, it wanted me to verify my identity to complete installation of Windows 10. I clicked on whatever button which indicated mistaken identity! Then it took ages and ages to “reinstall” my original operating system!!!

What happened to democracy?

When did you elect Bill Gates? M$ is a business and you have a licence to use their operating system under their terms and conditions. If you want to own an operating system then Linux is as close as you can get.

I think that would be a viable option if computer manufacturers were prepared to sell computers without a Windows OS. Ideally, they would be able to reduce costs accordingly as I’m sure they must pay MS in order to install Windows.

Linux is free at the moment, but I suspect that many people would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for it and that, then, would be a genuine choice.

It might also take MS down a peg or two and persuade them not to be so dictatorial.

When 10 came out gave it ago major problem I had no sound got that sorted but then it froze a few times but was with in the month so used the option to revert back to 7(Cant remember how I did it)

About 2 months gave 10 another go…it seems that all bugs have been sorted out and I find 10 a lot better than 7.

A lot faster and a very good virus program came with it.

Would never go back to windows 7.

The Matrix has you Galty !

Lindy, have you uninstalled the offending Windows Update yet? If not, do you need instructions?

The Linux Mint 17.3 Desktop (my own screenshot). Fairly Windows 7ish

How do they want you to prove your identity? I hate it when unexpected questions are thrown at me when upgrading, I think that’s why I would rather buy a new machine with the new OS already installed rather than muck about with my older model.

Is there an option to skip that stage or do it later? Perhaps something saying ‘I cannot do this right now?’

I agree with Galty!

I really cant understand why so many people are against W10!
we went from 7 to 8.1 and 10 when we were offered it, soon as it came out.
we find it a lot better layout, admittedly I dont like my pics being automatically shoved in ONE DRIVE but I just shift them back!
I prefer Microsoft Edge browser to google as well.

Might give Edge ago am going off google getting to many scrite errors with them lately.

PS I like the way my pictures are laid out that way find it a lot easier.

I agree, although my policy is not to upgrade immediately; leave time for them to sort out the bugs first.

The example you cite about pictures being moved is one example of several changes that W10 brought about which, although not too important, are a minor inconvenience. Why can’t they leave things alone? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

because they want you to register with ONE DRIVE, but I like my pics/downloads where I want them not where they tell me I want them.
W10 has been sorted, and you constantly get upgrades ect. which if you dont take now, you will end up paying.

Nothing wrong with One Drive; I have it installed, and Dropbox too. I copy new files to both whenever I save them until I have time to do a proper backup. I can also copy them to my ‘standby’ laptop in the same way whenever I get it out.

In this way, I never exceed or even approach the free storage limit.

I like things that are free! I may have said that before.

always found on 7 pictures were a pain in the neck to find the right one.

With 10 they are in my start up page I just scroll through them get the bigger picture compared to 7 which I can regonise(if that makes sense)

Well, I have yet to hear one single concrete reason why anyone should want or need to go to W10. Just one single piece of killer functionality that we just can’t do without.

I strongly suspect most just install it . . . just because.

Just because it’s the latest version
Just because Microsoft are pushing it so hard
Just because surely new is better than old?

It’s all nonsense. Microsoft WANT the populous on W10 not the other way around and there will be strong financial reasons why that is. It WILL imo be the fore-runner to a different method of paying for Windows and other products. If you install Win 10, I am willing to bet that over the next 3+ years you will end up spending more money than you would otherwise have done.

I likeWindows 10. Not everyone feels the same way though, so Microsoftis making it easy for anyone to complain – or you know, provide constructive criticism.

Cortana has been said to be a big advantage but, to be honest, I find it of no advantage at all as I can do anything it offers by other means. Others may feel it a useful addition, though.

Similarly, the virtual desktop feature, which I found a bit too fiddly, and the related facility of having four files open at once, easily dragged to each corner of the screen and each filling a quarter of the screen.

One advantage is that it is said to boot up more quickly, which I have found to be true although I am comparing an older W7 machine to the new W10 one.

Admittedly though, nothing I couldn’t do without. However, I bought a new laptop with W10 fitted, although I agree that I probably wouldn’t bother to upgrade from W7. W8 is quite another matter, though!

I don’t think there is any killer reason Realist. I can only give reasons why I upgraded.

Your ‘becauses’ do come into it to a degree and I’m just going to have to put up with what is thought about that. Musing further, it could also be to do with the upbringing and way of life. There were always plenty of new technical challenges in my working life. Becoming familiar with the details of them as quickly as possible was expected and always an interest.

I think this applies to what we’re talking about here too. I don’t need to upgrade but learning about the ‘new’ is ingrained and almost a pastime. The trouble is that having got to grips with Windows 10 and solved all problems, it works well and I often think that a computer that works properly can be a bit boring.

Also, if I’m going to write anything about a topic, I prefer to do it having had some experience of it. A lot of people seem to write about Microsoft operating systems having never tried or persisted with them. That’s OK but just not my own preference.

Money? Well yes, it could cost one way or another but this isn’t too much of a concern right now. I’ll use W.10 until something proves to be bad about it. Rather than worry about what might happen in the future, I’ll adapt/re-assess if or when the time comes. The computer world will never be static.

Another factor to consider is that as older versions of Windows are replaced by newer ones, manufacturers of ancillary equipment (printers, etc) develop new software to work with the new Windows OS. Then Microsoft brings out another new OS and manufacturers respond in the same way.

Before too long you find that your printer or scanner doesn’t function with your new W10 computer. I have found that with an old scanner which still works with my old W7 laptop. I also have an old copy of Adobe Photoshop on my old laptop which will not work with my new one.
Yes, there is compatibility mode, and I have tried that without success.

So there seems to be a sequence of leapfrogging, Microsoft ‘upgrading’ followed by manufacturers ‘upgrading’ over and over again. MS announced that W10 will be the ‘last’ Windows, although there will be regular ‘updates’. I wonder whether that will mean that our old equipment and software will continue to work with W10 for ever. Time will tell.
