Thanks Rob & you’re spot on about the energy storage.
When I calculate by BMI it says
“The best weight for your height is between 52.9 kilograms and 71.4 kilograms.” ![]()
That sounds a bit excessive to me, I think I’d look like a skeleton with a skin graft. ![]()
My target is 75 kg, if I can reach that I’ll be over the moon ![]()
Dieting dosnt really work long term, making lifestyle changes is what works. 4 years ago i weighed 16.7 stone. I knew my weight was affecting my health and had to do something about it. I was recommended Noom by a friend who had been very successful. I now weigh 8.5 stone following their mindful eating programme. Exercise helped so much too. I decided to train as a fitness instructor and nutritional consultant, qualified last year and run seated fitness classes for over 50’s. My passion is to help and inspire others to make lifestyle changes to reach their health goals. I love my job so much.
Not rocket science. Eat more than you burn, you’ll gain weight. Eat less than you burn, you’ll lose weight.
if only …
There are many unfortunate souls who can’t lose weigh, no matter how hard they try. And a few that can’t gain weight. We’re all different, thankfully, and some have health conditions and/or medication side effects that help confuse the issue.
If you want to lose weight it’s the activity that counts as well as the diet. UniGeezer is right.
I was a fit runner but as a courier I was putting on a few pounds around the middle. Sat in the van all day. Since I became a postman covering about 8 miles 5 days per week, and then training on my days off I removed all the surplus fat and took off a stone just like that…I even knocked ten minutes off my half marathon times… ![]()
I mostly eat chicken, egg whites, and lots of fresh greens. I’m also doing intermittent fasting. I barely exercise, but surprisingly, it actually works!”
Bet that’s a bit of a blast ![]()
The yolk is the best bit,
Hi
The boring scientist strikes again.
The only diet which works is the ELEM diet.
Eat Less Exercise More.
Simples
If it’s edible, I eat it…

It really isn’t that simple swimfeeders.
Hi
It really is that simple, you have got to use up more calories than you take in.
The are many different ways of achieving this, often depending on any medical conditions you may have.
I was on a strict low fat diet, now that is out of the door and now on a high protein , low salt, fluid restricted diet.
No more bacon but I can now have eggs.
It really isn’t that simple?
Fundamentally I agree with what you say, maybe I’m looking at the bigger picture as far as society is concerned ![]()
Yes, society has got a bit bigger
i agreed.
During Covid I lost 35Kg in 10 months - I went from 105Kg to 70Kg. I suffered for it by having a gallbladder removed, but I lost the weight. I have also put 25Kg of it back on and am in the middle of trying to lose it again (already 5Kg down just 20Kg to go). I can therefore tell you what worked for me. I started doing 5:2, weighed everything, started running, and lived on salads and no puddings. What I also found interesting was finding out where the calories were actually hiding, by reading the labels. I discovered that the biggest evil were concentrated forms of flour! That included bread (I love bread!) and anything made of flour - cakes, puddings, batters, sauces, The moment you consumed anything made of flour up went the calories, so then portion control and weighing became very important. Then it was the realisation that portion sizes don’t actually look a lot on the plate - a smaller plate helps, but it’s the things you don’t even think about. Each morning you may tip out a ‘bowl’ of breakfast cereal. You ought to weigh that and see how many standard 30-50g portions it actually contains. Then weigh a standard 30g-50g portion size and actually see how little it is. Then find yourself a scoop that just contains that much breakfast cereal and limit yourself to that each day. As a tip - I do a single Weetbisk each morning with cinnamon on it (use cinnamon on all sorts of things, its sweeter taste means you can pass on real sugar. Also, the lowest calorie cereal is Rice Krispies or their supermarket equivalent - not Special K!!! Also, print out a list of the calories in various fruits and veggies and do the same for meats then start to weigh out the portions that contain them until you can do it by eye. I found you didn’t need to adopt the latest new fangled fad diet. Knowledge, label reading, portion control and a willingness to be tough with yourself for months on end and you can lose weight, I did and I will again. You can make it easier with exercise, but you won’t lose weight unless you consume less calories than you burn. The thing with exercise is realising how inefficient it is at burning calories. It doesn’t really matter what you do, but it normally takes around 30 minutes of exercise to burn around 250-300 calories - that’s about what’s in a decent slice of bread. It’s far easier and quicker to eat them than it is to burn them, which is why knowing what you are eating is so important.
The quickest way to loose weight is to get a divorce
It’s really tricky, although no doubt the science/principles are largely the same we’re all very different as individuals/characters. Getting back to the gym so to speak, when I’m training the diet almost just slots into place. Loads of pasta, rice, chicken breast, quality veggie burgers, vitamin supplements etc. Oh , and far fewer visits to the off licence and the pub! ![]()
No pain, no gain, yes!
