Since Mollie has seen fit to previously ‘ignore me’ I will just treat this post with all the contempt it deserves of someone who has little or no knowledge of history or food.
Ancient humans ate all those animals (as their cave drawings proved). Had they not done so and seen the worth of preserving those species for their own and future generations, those animals would have gone the same way as the Dinosaurs and would have become extinct long ago. It is only because the human species preserved these animals that we are able to eat some of them now. The vast herds of Wildebeeste that roam the Serengeti plain are only able to do so because conservationists (Like Armand & Michaela Dennis) managed to keep the indigenous population away from wild animals who have now grown again into vast herds wich are too large for the vegetation to maintain. By careful culling, we are both able to preserve the species, but allow us also to eat the meat, otherwise it would go to waste.
If Mollie would think a little instead of being the reactionary that she is, she would realise that the meat is not widely available. The reason being it is culled to preserve the environment in which it lives. The same way that deer and wild boar are culled here.
Some clever animal lovers set free Mink that were being farmed for their fur, which had devastating results on our native wild life. Their intentions were of the best but their ignorance has long lasting consequences.
The worst offenders are the poachers who kill animals, like the rhino, for nothing more than a horn.
Tried sweet potato vermicelli tonight and was rather disappointed. It sounded flavourful but was quite tasteless. Mind you I only put pasta sauce on it so maybe if I find a more suitable soy-based recipe that would perk it up.
Annie darlin’ - try making a sweet potato mash - can be made with a combination of other (root) vegetables too - like Parsnips, Celeriac, turnips, and swede. When cooked, place in a bowl, add a large knob of butter and mash thoroughly - makes a delightful alternative to plain potato mash.
Iced green tea and a nice garden salad for me… but reading so many posts from the successful gardeners on here makes me wish I had fresh-picked greens and veggies instead of store bought!
