This has been dormant for a bit, thought I’d bring it back up. And was surprised to see my last posting above was what I’m having tonight!
Tonight I had mashed potato, spicy sausages, cauliflower and broccolli…not had that for a while and really enjoyed it-used up last of my fresh vegetables so its off to the farm shop for some more tomorrow…
Oh dear im fancying something from the Chinese!! Only trouble its got to be the worst Chinese ever!! It’s not dodgy tummy type of worst just tasteless and not nicely cooked…
Have you thought about learning to cook Chinese? It’s not all that difficult; I taught myself from a book, and am pretty proficient at it if I say so as shouldn’t.
I can cook chinese but I was avoiding bothering!! Anyway the craving passed and I had lobster lol We went out on the boat and there were about 30 in out pots yumm.
Lobster… food of the Gods! How I love it.
Mmm, I’d take lobster over Chinese any day!
Grilled brown trout with new potatoes and courgette/spring onion (scallion) for us tonight
I’d take lobster too, DM! Never had brown trout, all we get in the market is rainbow (farmed), but delicious.
The brown trout a farmed too, at the same place as the rainbow ones available to us at the farmers’ market. They are just a few pennies more expensive but, to us, seem to have both a better (though delicate) flavour and a nicer texture.
We regularly buy four (sometimes six) at the monthly market, so trout is on the menu at least once a fortnight. I think it makes an excellent meal and looks quite luxurious, despite not costing a lot (about £1.70 each - or $2.60, according to my currency calculator)
That’s interesting; didn’t know they were farmed too. I wonder why we don’t see them here, I’d like to try one. Trout is an ideal meal for a single person IMO. Right size portion, easy to cook and delicious. (Note to self: add trout to Sunday’s shipping list!)
I think brown trout is mainly a ‘sport’ fish in the US DM. Bet someone has started farming them though.
I think I’ve mentioned before on one of our US visits, we were crossing Lake Champlain from upstate New York to Burlington VT on the ferry. There were several flat-bed trucks on board with large tanks on them, parked next to the rails. At the half way stage in the crossing the bungs were released and cascades of water and torrents of small fish were released into the lake. At which stage we read the signs on the trucks, declaring them to be from such and such hatchery. Great memory. I think we tried to take pics but, unsuprisingly, they were rubbish.
Now I feel really privileged as we usually fish our own brown trout when we are staying at our country cottage. They are not big - between 0,2 - 0,5 kgs - but their red & delicious meat tastes like nothing else.
I usually just gut them and remove head & tail & fins - then I fill them with dill and fry them in a pan with butter. When they are cooked I add sour cream and lemon to the pan. Served with new potatoes this dish almost makes my mouth water…
I cook rainbow trout with the head and tail on, just broil it. Don’t lose any of the juices that way.
Trout - in fact all fish is my favourite “meat” these days and I tend to cook it wrapped in foil and baked, or microwaved sometimes. Its good with a bit of chilli and butter.
Today we are just having some seeded rolls with egg and ham - can’t be bothered to cook - too much to do in the garden.
Shrimp creole tonight!
Eating alone is no fun. But one tries. A gammon steak with a spicy lentil sauce and a huge home grown salad
No help for it if you live alone. I’ve gotten very good at adapting recipes for one, as I do love my food; and cannot imagine living off frozen entrees as some of my single guy friends do. Ugh~!
Hope Jenny is improving and will be home to you soon …
Thursday is one of my two “no cook” days, salmon salad sandwich, curried cauliflower and Kettle crisps.
Friday is my night off from cooking-usually have a chinese takeaway or cchippy tea. Tonight it was lightly battered fish, chips and mushy peas with a slice of wholemeal bread…enjoyed every mouthful!
