As for today, I took some pork shoulder chops out of the freezer last night, there were four and could not separate, so better pair will be grilled tonight and served with broccoli, cauli, French beans and mash, and the other two will be cut up and with the addition of an apple and a packet mix made into a pork with cider and apple casserole, which will sit in the 'fridge for a few days until we are ready to eat.
Made the mouth water a little bit there daisymay. My home made hamburgers never taste quite as good as I expect and the reason is that to make a good burger you must use a good cut of meat and mince it yourself. (note to self do this next time)
Had a packet of Beef mince and onion in my freezer yesterday, so took about half of it, placed in large frying pan and fried off. Added some mixed veg, a dash of Worcester sauce and cooked the whole lot through. When cooked, scooped into oven tray and spread out evenly, put mashed potato over the top and then added grated cheese on top of potato. Placed under grill until cheese has melted and potato has turned golden brown. I made enough that I can finish it off for lunch today too.
Not sure I will have time today, so having a cup of soup at about 11am and another mid afternoon. Should keep me going along with numerous cups of tea LOL
Had Chicken Piri Piri, roast potatoes and vegs. today. Tonight having a Turkey Roll.
Fried rice, chicken pieces, some bbq sauce, 2 veg spring rolls, the remainder of the hoisin sauce from t’other day, and a few slices of garlic bread.
Today is going to be Jewish Chicken Penicilian with Mash Potatoes.
Pork steak with vegetables for meat eater and a quorn pretending to be chicken steak for me
I have never understood why people who refuse to eat actual meat, will still eat something masquerading as meat. Is it a sub conscious manifestation of a deep rooted but unacknowledged desire for the real thing? Or is simply shame/embarrasmment at not eating meat so it is necessary yo pretend to do so?
I get the Jewish penicillin reference, but cannot see how one would eat soup and mashed potato, surely the mash would simply dissolve into the soup?
Is this what you ladies are talking about if so then it is penicillin chicken soup. Have you any idea why it is called penicillin chicken soup? Does penicillin mean cure and therefore is this the chicken soup used for colds and flu?
I was aware that chicken soup is known as Jewish Penicillin, my query was that it was being served with mashed potato, which would surely dissolve into the soup.
I believe the nomenclature comes from the idea that Jewish mothers would serve chicken soup (made with the whole chicken) to any family member who was ill. Funny thing is I have this vague recollection of something on the old goggle box, in which some scientist had examined said chicken soup Nd determined the combination of herbs etc used in its making actually was beneficial and boosted the immune system.
Interesting, I think I have heard this before and somehow any soup is soothing and of course if it is enough then it clears the head. I believe that a lot of old wives recipes and beliefs have some truth in them and they have been tried and tested for yonks.
Many years ago we went camping and I tried to make ‘mash’ with powdered mashed potato, I added too much water and it was too runny my husband suggested adding an oxo cube to it so that it ended up and pretty good gravy.
Hi Ladies,
Jewish Penicilian, is an old wives tale, to ward off colds and flu.
The recipe that Cookiecate has shown is not quite the same as the Jewish one, it’s of course Chicken, onions, sweetcorn, OSEM soup mix, Pepper, mixed herbs, and the mash potato is just my choice, but I put my potato on the side, not altogether, as it is a soup.
They have this soup also on PASSOVER.
Today we will be having Steak and Kidney Pudding, new potatoes, mix vegs. and Brussels.
Tut, tut, tut Sisie darlin’ - letting the side down, its Sunday - should be full roast today!!!![]()

Treat for meat eater today chicken and chips one of his favourites, baked beans with vegetarian sausages for me.
home made veg soup for lunch and roast Pork plus all trimmings for tea.
Lunch today was courtesy of Morrison’s cafe and paid for by emptying a half full jar of 1 & 2p coins into the Coinstar machine. This yielded £5.47 and got me a mini roast beef lunch, a jam doughnut and a pot of tea (out of which I got 2 cups). And I had change.
Supper tonight for taking tablets will probably be toast.
UJ I don’t stick to Tradition, I eat what I fancy on the day, but you know how much I love the S&K Pudding.
