What are you having for lunch/dinner? (Part 1)

DM I used to eat 'Ovaltine sarnies as a kid - ovaltine sprinkled on ‘buttered’ bread - at the time was delicious!!!

I have a bit of a thing for highlights hot chocolate (sugar being my problem too) I see Horlicks do a low sugar variety too, haven’t tried it but then I am not keen on the full sugar variety either.

Just for the record Mollie - Kangaroos are so prolific in Aus that in some areas they are considered pests or vermin and are culled in their thousands. Similarly in Africa, the Wildebeeste are also very prolific and their annual migration of vast herds of them across the plains of East Africa have been the subject of wild life films by inter alia David Attenborough. Culling parts of these herds to allow the species to survive (without the cull the herds would grow too large and starve because there is insufficient grassland for them). The same truth exists further South in outh Africa where herds of Kudu, Impala and Ostriches have to be ‘culled’ to ensure the continued existence of the species.

So rather than eating, as you suggest wild animals on the verge of extinction, by eating such meats I am assisting in the preservation of such species.

NUFF Said???

We are going out for an Indian lunchtime, so probably just a sarnie this evening.

Venison (Roe deer) Bourguignon this evening. I looked for alternative recipes, but most of them seemed to be a variation on that theme - cooked in wine with onions, mushrooms, herbs etc…

Loads of tomatoes in the polytunnel, so maybe homemade soup for lunch.

Actually the air miles the meat travels is quite shocking, so even if it’s ethically source (no meat is ) then the pollution caused by transporting it really isn’t very good.

Julie, in the global market we all now live in, much of the food (including all your fruit and vegetables) you purchase from the supermarket is imported from around the world. So criticising me for eating meat which may originate from Australia or countries in Africa is somewhat hypocritical when you yourself eat foods that are imported from the selfsame countries and also contribute to pollution.

My fruit and veg are sourced locally, rarely if ever see me eat anything out of season as I rely on local growers. If I see something in the supermarket from say Spain/Israel etc I leave it there. I do try not to be hypocritical UJ I have strict standards and apply them to myself. I am not a huge believer in global warming but it does no harm to support our country and our growers rather than other countries.

Vegemite is my only real product from abroad, my husband also occasionally has a banana both of which are carried far to get here but I try to off set my carbon emission in other ways.

such a lovely day, so we had a picnic lunch with our 2 1/2 yo grandson…with ice cream to follow…

Sounds lovely lavander !

Having boiled eggs with soldiers today, missed breakfast and lunch so having them shortly.

Anyone has this bug going round I wish you well seems to be a 24 hour thing but nasty while you have it !

Roast Duck Legs and veg. Followed by Raspberries and cream. mmmm

My roasties were £1.15, not 1.59. (Thought I’d clear that up!! Lol)

Chicken casserole this evening, with potatoes, peas and dumplings. My carboot pals had McDs about 4pm. I resisted, knowing I had supper already cooked, so just a diet coke. And again the restaurant didn’t have any icecream! Not good enough.

I’m T2 and still have sweets and sugar. Love Ovaltine (remember a chocolate bar with it in years ago?).

I’m curious Jazzi are you diet controlled ? I couldn’t eat sugar and carbs and remain diet controlled at all.

No Julie, I have Metformin tablets twice a day. My regular blood tests show blood sugar ‘well controlled’ (GPs’ words). Yes, before you all shout at me, I DO know it could backfire on me at any time.

I try to walk every day and do the odd bit of work on my allotment as exercise. And on Monday mornings have a terrific workout clearing out outside animal cages.

I wasn’t going to shout it must be easier to be medicated I guess but I choose diet to get mine under control. Interestingly the diabetic nurse said her diet controlled patients are doing better than her medicated ones so I am quite happy to carry on as I am.

I always thought taking sugar out of my diet would be hard but after the first week I haven’t looked back and couldn’t eat sweet stuff like I used to even if someone paid me now, just no appetite for it.

Today we have Roast Gammon and vegetables.

Yesterday we had the stuffed and braised hearts and delicious they were too, with peas, french beans, broccoli, and carrots and plainly mashed maris pipers (that is no butter or milk) and a delicious gravy made from the ‘jus’ in the casserole dish. And to follow I cut up a couple of the chocolate muffins and opened and drained a tin of strawberries and using a sugar free jelly made a trifle (why keep for high days and holidays huh?)

Today though, son working until 8pm so no big dinner, had can of minestrone soup earlier and yesterday I found some smoked trout fillets in the freezer I had forgotten about, and in the 'fridge have a ‘jus roll’ focaccia, so will cook that and make a huge smoked trout and salad sandwich to share.

Today it’s a simple dinner of: Home bought small Lasagna and Homemade Singapore Noodles as i’m on my own for 2 days.

Not wishing to sound rude, but that sounds a really odd combination, or are you describing two different meals?

Hi Des,

Yes you are right, it is an odd combination, but I just can’t be bothered today in cooking for one, plus it’s two carbs together which is not a good idea for Diabetics either. Sue xx
