What are you having for lunch/dinner? (Part 1)

always beggers me up that, something light how about fish or cauliflower cheese followed by fruit.

How about homemade soup. a real easy and quick one if you like toms is Tomato and basil soup
! tin of toms/1lb fresh if you prefer
1 potato
1 med onion
tsp dried basil/or sml buch offresh if you want but that goes in at the end then.

chop onion and fry gently till see through, add pots chopped into thin slivers (it thickens it) toms, basil and seasoning to taste (I have added a dash of Worcester sauce). Cook till potato is soft, press through a sieve and serve with crusty bread but any will do really. Delia Smith.

How about a nice full English tea. Several types of sandwich, some crumpets, scones with jam and cream, and maybe some kind of cake. I have this quite a lot, I don’t have the scones but toasted crumpets are gorgeous and they are filling so I don’t need the sandwiches.

Sooooo How about some Tea and Crumpets

The wife will be pleased tonight - I’ve got a nice pot of pea and ham soup on the stove bubbling away and two BRILLIANT pieces of steak I picked up from the local shop this morning.

My plan is to cook the steak in the griddle pan of the George Foreman grill then have some mashed tatties with mustard through them, boiled carrots, sweet corn, peas, lots of fried onions and some lovely gravy.

Then for desert I’ll make some meringue which we’ll have with whipped double cream.

Mmm!

Yes I know we’re having cream with just about every desert for the past week or so but hey-ho. We all have to die of something - I may as well die of an overdose of double cream

Would that be as well as the Vodka Brandy Whiskey and Malabu???

Moyra darlin’ - that depends on the contents of your fridge, freezer and store cupboards. If you have milk, plain flour and sausages - how about toad-in-the-hole???

 What Vodka, Brandy, Whiskey and Malibu? I have no recollection of drinking such things, the good Christian boy I am

Just green tea for me Hazel.

Surprised you didn’t say ‘treen gea’ hic. :-D:-D

Green tea??? - errrgh yuk!!! - tot of Brandy in a black coffee is much better!!!

Give me half an hour and I will

Last night made some chilli from scratch which son says was deliciouso (I had ham sandwich and veggie soup as was not very hungry) Tonight though am in the middle of preparing a huge shepherds pie with hopefully enough left overs for his lunch tomorrow as it is his day off. - little trick for lovely crunch on the pots, use a ricer and rice directly onto the top of the minced lamb/carrot/pea bottom, dab with butter and bung in oven- yum!

Whoa DM, where’s the grated cheese atop the potatoes??? Positively can’t serve shepherd’s pie without grated cheese - just not done!!!

Roast tonight, Chicken wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cheese, Vegs.

My son who is excuse this profanity VEGETARIAN made a chilli last night with Quorn. It was delicious. We got some wraps put a goodly sized dollop of chilli in the wrap added grated cheese, another goodly dollop of Greek yogurt and Greek salad with the feta cheese and olives rolled it up and it was soooooooooo good. Tonight he is making stir fry with quorn chicken pieces and we shall see.

Tonight we are having Jewish Chicken Penicilian. I am just going to cook it now as it takes a couple of hours. We will have mash potatoes and peas with it.

Sounds interesting susie, what is this dish?

Took a pork slice out the freezer earlier this morning. When it defrosts will casserole it after smothering it in mustard & honey. Will peel/chop carrot, potato and parsnip to add to the dish and make gravy from oxo cube and bisto powder. Lunch should be ready around 14.30ish.

Cottage Pie, peas and carrots. Cheese on top of the cottage pie.

Not a clue cos after car broke down and spent 3/4 hr in freezing cold got home and had bacon liver toms mushrms, toast and a big mug of hot coffee. It’ll be either beef curry or chilli with rice (in freezer) or fish, chips and peas. Going to have another coffee now.

Hi Cate,

It’s a Jewish dish that they have on Passover or if they have a cold. It’s a Chicken Broth. You have to boil Chicken thighs with skin on with onions for 1 hr. take the chicken out leaving the juices in the saucepan, bone and skin the chicken, shred the chicken into pieces, put back into the saucepan, add some Jewish Instant Chicken Stock, Mixed Herbs, S&P and a few sweetcorn, simmer for another 1/2 hr. then serve ontop of Mash Potatoes.

A very warming dinner for a winter’s day.

I learnt this dish because my Mother-in-Law worked at a Jewish School as a Cook for 40 years and had to have special training to cook Jewish Dishes and have the food blessed by the Rabi and eggs cracked by a Jewish Lady.

Thanks for that susie I shall try that, sounds wonderful. We used to live in New York and I learned to love certain Jewish foods but I had never heard of this one. Your mother in law must have been quite a special lady, as I know Jews are very strict about food preparation. I am so chaotic I would certainly have used the wrong chopping board or dish cloth.
