It building slowly, 26c here in the SW , bit ironic if the supposed record breaking temps didn’t arrive.

Hi Logan, they just said on local radio, that it could reach 41° here tomorrow.
I haven’t looked for a couple of hours, but at around 11 o/clock it had got to 28°,

Where’s here ?

Yes, Caricature - well, here in the Northants area anyway.

I’m here at 23°C and no breeze. I just went out to the local shop to buy ice lollies for the freezer and they were melting by the time I got home (10 mins). :fire:

I could cope with 23° Pixie, but as it creeps nearer and nearer to 30, I really don’t like it.
I’ve got a silly irrational, recurring thought that something big is brewing, like an earthquake, or a huge freak storm. :fearful:

29c upstairs 25.5c downstairs hall where it’s cooler. It’s been 37c in the UK before and nobody made it into a big media campaign. I just find this baffling.

We’ll I’ve already purchased my LifeStraw Personal Water Filter from Amazon.
Pretty impressive, I hope it filters out the taste of Canada goose pooh!

Only time will tell.

It won’t come to that Mups :hugs: It’s normal to have worrying thoughts when things like this are so unusual. I think it’ll only be for a couple of days then back to Autumn temps, you’ll see! :fallen_leaf: (they are autumn leaves btw, not what they look like!)

Yes I expect you’re right, Pixie. It’s all the usual scare mongering on the news that does it.
Best to stop listening. :grinning:

I do get sick of people like that arrogant chap, John Hayes, scoffing at the advice being given to deal with a heatwave in UK.
Brits aren’t used to these temperatures so the hot weather routine does not come naturally - many Brits don’t think about heatstroke until they start suffering the symptoms of it.

Of course it’s all common sense but, as Swimmy has already pointed out, the usual temperate climate of UK has never needed the type of cool buildings and shaded areas that are the norm in hot countries or a lifestyle which revolves around being active in the coolest parts of the day and resting somewhere cool during the hottest parts of the day.
And, of course, it takes time for the body to acclimatise to much higher or cooler temperatures than we are used to.

I’ve just returned from 6 weeks in Greece in hotter temperatures than we have here, so I am acclimatised to the heat, but I will still be seeking shade from the mid-day sun here, and will still be keeping hydrated with plenty of water and drinks, just as I would when abroad.

I’m glad I don’t have to go to work in the kind of temperatures that have been forecast - there’s a reason that shops and businesses close for a few hours in the middle of the day in Greece - keeping your body cool is energy intensive, so it’s good to conserve energy and rest in the shade at the hottest part of the day.

I see there is a move to close schools down which I find incomprehensible .
My children went to school in the tropics and the classrooms were not air conditioned but usually had a fan .
It’s was hot and humid all the time but children went to school regardless .

Good post, Boot. :+1:

I’m not sure how many school children living in UK in 2002 have experienced going to class with such high temperatures and humidity, as others have suggested it’s only going to be for a couple of days.

I really don’t see the problem with cutting them a bit of slack.

Not so sure about schools. Those that have air con, I can’t see why they can’t stay open. They’d probably be cooler there than in their own homes!

What annoyed me more, was when it was very hot a couple of weeks or more back, they didn’t flippin’ well stop the horse racing did they! I thought that was disgraceful.
Those poor animals being made to run their hearts out in high temperatures, while carrying a bloke with a whip sitting on them.
That’s what money does for greedy people.

They are just about ready to break up so they won’t be doing much work .
Loads of expat children who originally came from the U.K. go to school in hot countries .

It’s gone up to 24°C with me now since I last posted. Its the lack of air…its all cloud too, not a bit of blue sky. The air is so heavy.

Has anyone tried putting cold water, ice, or a wet towel in fron of a fan?
If so, did you find it makes a difference?

I froze 3 bottles of water last night, and have one standing in front of a fan, but I can’t say it feels a lot different.

Has anyone got any other ideas?
