UK heatwave: Temperatures rise to 31.8C and could climb further

Well, get used to seeing more of these temperatures, indeed extreme weather in general

A national emergency has been declared for Monday and Tuesday.
Phew!

Was just reading this - it isn’t news really, we know already that cities are far warmer than open spaces, but still…the difference is more dramatic than first thought. Especially if this weather is becoming the norm now  (she says, sitting at a measly 10°C)

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that we dramatically over react to things these days?
:flushed:

In this instance I think it’s about keeping people informed. My school has given parents the option of bringing their kids home at midway on Monday and Tuesday, that seems sensible.

Let’s see what happens over the next few days, it is an unknown quantity to some extent.

We are on an island - surrounded by water - why does someone not build a desalination plant or two ?

If people haven’t got the gumption to keep themselves cool in the hot weather without the media and government declaring a state of emergency there is something badly wrong with society. And you had to die in class before they would send you home when I went to school. We battled two miles to school on shank’s pony through rain, snow and heatwaves and never missed a day. We are breeding a nation of wusses! :009:

I know Tabby…The government and water companies should ‘Get their finger out!’ and that goes for the energy suppliers also. Countries going to the dogs! Foreign dogs at that…

Its a two day heatwave, extreme granted but records only go back since the inception of the thermometer , have these temps been experienced before , can’t see why not . The heat in 76 lasted longer .

Oh I know…4 miles a day here, AND had to fetch water from the well or the local stream when the pipes froze in water. 6ft high snowdrifts I had to plough through with buckets an’ all. That was before going to school. When I got back, I had to walk the dogs for miles. Then I had to cook dinner on an open fire because nothing worked. Kids today don’t know how lucky they are, bunch of cissies.

Nobody is being sent home, there is a choice.
Some kids have profound additional needs, they struggle with certain situations.
Once again, let’s see how this plays out.

And…I forgot to mention my paper round before going to school Pixie, and on a Thursday lunchtime I took the Gazettes in my dinner hour…
:biking_man:
Good money though…7 shillings and sixpence for the morning round, and four bob for the Gazettes and evening papers…

My after school job involved delivering false teeth up and down Harley Street, two quid a week, enough to buy four seven inch singles from Woolworths…cushy

That would have been around 1976 so I am still on topic… just!

I am Chief Derailer of topics, so I can hardly wag the finger. :joy: Anyway…after school jobs would be a great thread to start if you felt like it. I’m finding it fascinating to know what people did before and after school. Rain, hail, or sun.

The cost plus energy cost.

Yes, I think that would be a terrific thread to start:-)
