Type of Flooring

I find hard flooring too “echoing” and not very cosy.
It’s OK in utility areas, like kitchens and bathrooms, and even in dining rooms but I prefer a carpet in a sitting room and in bedrooms.

I never wear outdoor shoes in the house and I can’t imagine what I’d be doing in those rooms to make the carpet any dirtier than my sofa or my bed, so I don’t get why it would be unhygienic.

I usually find more crumbs and my own hairs that have fallen down the sides of the sofa cushions when I take them off to vacuum than I find on the carpet and I’ve never heard anybody say sofas are too unhygienic to have in a house - perhaps we should all chuck out the sofas and comfy chairs and use hard plastic benches which are easier to clean - and get rid of those comfy beds cos they harbour all sorts of bugs too. :stuck_out_tongue:

@Lucylulu has already made a similar point about carpet and laminate

Having a dog in the house is nearly as bad as having a woman in the house, they shed hair everywhere. After a visit from my daughter or daughter in law I am constantly having to untangle their hair from the brush of my carpet sweeper.

It’s a dog eat dog world.

yep same here. I think the floor is maybe cooler?

This is the flooring for this room. Cooler, yes.
And this is him ten minutes ago. Then he retired to his bed.

Probably, Annie.
Some dogs also get static shocks off some carpets too.

My Sis had a wooden floor laid in her sitting room, when she got her young puppy - she also has her own bed in the hallway - but she prefers to recline on a large footstool to read her magazines …

I’m undecided what floor coverings to put in my hall and kitchen once the build is done…I know for sure plaid carpet on the stairs and landing …and either parquet light oak wood throughout or a high gloss ceramic…the jury is out. I have carpets in all the other rooms…

PS …I have a cat called George who likes to sit on the vacuum as its pushed around the rooms…he isn’t smelly unless he had fish for tea

Summer, have you considered Linoleum?

I wouldn’t put cushion floor in a kitchen, it tears too easily if an appliance has to be moved for cleaning behind, for example.

The politically correct term these days is “vinyl flooring”

I like ceramic tiles the ones that are non slip, worth the investment

I think linoleum is probably the more “politically correct” floor covering nowadays, because it is made from natural, renewable resources
Vinyl flooring takes more energy and non-renewable resources to construct than linoleum, so is less environmentally friendly.

I know you can buy modern linoleum in UK now but I don’t know anyone who has it in their home - it doesn’t have the same waterproof qualities as vinyl and seems less robust in use.

I didn’t realise there was a difference. when I asked to see lino in the shop I was politely corrected and pointed in the direction of “vinyl flooring”

“Linoleum was eventually replaced in the 1950s and 1960s with plastic-based products.”
I remembered it being phased out when I worked at Kircaldy.

My OH and I never agree. We have carpets in all rooms and hall except kitchen and bathroom which are ceramic tiled. The lounge badly needs doing but hubby wants laminate flooring and I don’t. I much prefer carpets. We always buy very good quality carpet and it looks the business and is so cozy. Not sure who will win at this stage

Linoleum must have made a come-back because it is still sold.
I had a look at some online only today - made from 97% natural products - I think it may be used more in commercial settings than domestic ones?

Yes but it isn’t the same stuff.
