I had no idea lino was a quality natural product. I always thought it was cheapo plastic and totally out of fashion since the mid 80s. It seems to have made a comeback with the “vinyl flooring” label and interesting Moroccan style swirly designs.
The genuine “lino” or linoleum is made from layers of melted linseed oil and I believe a mesh of fibres supports the linseed oil. It is a totally natural product and can be very beautiful. It is still sold and we looked into getting it at one time, but it seemed a bit expensive and we changed our minds.
We currently have the bedrooms and lounge, plus stairs carpeted (all the same) and the hall, sitting room, dining room, kitchen and conservatory areas are laid with a grained laminate - same type all through. We also have dogs and this works well for us and it means I don’t have a huge amount to vacuum (dogs don’t come upstairs). Bathrooms and downstairs cloakroom are ceramic tiled.
Just out of curiosity I thought I would share the dimensions of the largest room in the flat - which is the living room. (I plan on carpeting everything but the bathroom & kitchen).
My living room is 3.68m by 4.3m…tiny, huh?
I have to admit when I read this I thought that it was about the same size as my laundry but in actual fact your lounge is nearly twice as big as my laundry
When I was last in the UK I stayed with my cousin, he had no shower and a carpeted bathroom, I was terrified in case I got water on it. Who came up with that idea?
Ugh I would never have carpet in the bathroom!
So you have a laundry room then? That’s a bit posh!
No, it’s not posh I’m afraid, I doubt there would a house or flat in Australia without a laundry.
When I bought this house the laundry was separate building - It was a weatherboard affair (like the house) with a concrete double sink, a wringer, a “copper” (a big heated tub) and the house water heater, just a step up from a shed. It has long gone, the area taken up by a house extension
I still have the sink between the garage and the car port, they used to be in great demand from horse owners as a water trough.
Sounds great Bruce! I like a house with history
Very 1980s
My son just had a parquet linoleum type vinyl floor fitted it came in tiles it’s a bit like amtico if anyone knows that… very hard wearing and it looks really good…I might have a look at that…another thing to consider
In my new place I’ve gone for click together vinyl really happy with it . Looks amazing .
I guess it’s not like the 1970s vinyl tiles that you’d glue to the floor and then watch peel off a few years later…?
Or oilcloth, as it was known as. Hard wearing, but it goes brittle after time and breaks. As someone who has had to take hundreds of square metres of the stuff over the years to get to the floorboards beneath, I can attest to this.
No vinyl isnt glued or peeled , it looks like real wood it comes in lengths like wood and clicks together . Its waterproof scratch proof and guaranteed for years . My lounge .
Looks just like laminate or hardwood flooring. I’d never guess it was vinyl. Where did you find this?
Fitted carpets every where except in kitchen & bath room, lino there, but the spare second loo still has carpet.
That’s vinyl? Wow, I would never have believed it, it looks just like a really high quality laminate or hardwood boards as Annie said.

Yes it’s called Quickstep Vinyl I bought it from Howdens although it’s available elsewhere , it’s not vinyl sheeting ! It has a wood grain finish its indistinguishable from wood. It also comes in planks like wood unlike wood it’s waterproof. I’m thrilled with it . And no they aren’t paying me .
