It has a military term, it’s called targets of oprtunity .
But in plain English ( not American) it means biting off more than you can chew , making a cock-up of it and getting desperate for an exit strategy.
Could be talking about Vietnam.

Here is the genius of Trump.
Attack Iran while ignoring any advice that this will quickly become problematic and in particular ignore the likelihood that Iran closes the straights of Hormuz (after all, they done it before). Also, conveniently ignore the fact that Russia is key ally of Iran and the supplier of much of its military hardware.
Find that the choke hold that Iran has applied on oil supply means that the price of oil sky rockets. Trump then panics and pushes out oil held in strategic reserves (not a good idea). The price of oil keeps going up.
Here’s the thing - high oil prices really help Russia. Its their main income. Trump is not just stopping any support to Ukraine, he has just pumped Russia’s funding for the war with Ukraine.
Then Trump really goes for gold. He thinks that if he drops the sanctions on Russian oil then this new flow of oil might help reduce the price. Of course it has no effect on the oil prices. But it does further boost the economy of Russia. That is, the Russia that helps Iran.
Is Trump terminally stupid?

I think he’s first and foremost a businessman so there will be some angle somewhere that brings him some personal gain.
He’s certainly not in it for humanitarian reasons.

There is none so blind that will not see. It’s the exact same tactic used on 46 different countries. They didn’t see it then and the don’t see it now.
He has pulled the same current tactic on two other countries. In short, 48 successful objectives completed and one in the works. It is a good record no matter that other just don’t understand/comprehend the tactical operations, that there for the whole world to see. Oh well.
All the military strategic arm chair warriors here has seen the cause and effect. All except the ones that are to blind to see. Not only is Russia a key allie with Iran. News flash, so is China, North Korea and of course the arm chair warriors already know this. The countries the support Russia behind the scenes are India, Brazil, France and minor countries in Africa.
The arm chair warriors have seen the supply from Iran of drones hasn’t slowed down it has completely stopped. And Russia has pulled out of moth balls, the old out dated tanks and trying to get the old Soviet era tanks back. if you don’t see the loses recently in Ukraine of men, equipment and land, Russia doesn’t have the resources to support two fronts.

it seems that at the sunday air force one conference Mr T said something to the effect of “maybe we shouldn’t even be there” ref Iran…is that part of the “targets of oprtunity” strategy, or part of the “if he makes a mistake he adapts to the change” approach? I’m waiting for him to blame European and other nations for the US invasion of Iran…

Back in the Operation Sealion days, the population had a pair of balls. Faced with hundreds of barges crossing the Channel, the British learnt to set the sea alight, which may not have worked, but it sure as hell scared the hell out of the Germans when news leaked out about it.
