The Israeli military also said it had reopened the nearby Kerem Shalom goods crossing for humanitarian aid on Wednesday, but the UN has said the fighting has made it impossible for it to pick up supplies there.
And unless they receive deliveries of fuel in the next few days, the World Health Organization has said all hospitals in Rafah and elsewhere in southern Gaza may soon have to halt services.

Gershon Baskin, a political activist and veteran negotiator who helped broker the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit from Gaza in 2011, said an ongoing military offensive will not bring home the hostages safe and alive.
âThe military offensive will only kill more hostages,â he told The Independent bluntly, adding he was concerned there was no way to bridge the gaps between Hamas and Israelâs versions of a truce deal. Hamas wants an end to the war and Mr Netanyahuâs government does not, he said.

David Cameron, when he was Britainâs prime minister, said in 2010: âGaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp.â
It was allowed to remain a prison camp, and the world is now seeing the consequences.

âOn Saturday evening, we gathered to light candles for our nightly Gaza vigil,â the statement read.
"Before we even began reciting the names of the dead, six men leapt out of a van nearby and accosted us with xenophobic and transphobic slurs, among a litany of other vitriolic insults.
âThey ripped down our art, physically assaulted nearby members of the community, and particularly targeted Jewish students trying to deescalate the situation, using unacceptable anti-Semitic language.â
The group said no one was hurt but said members remained âenraged at the politically-motivated fearmongeringâ that jeopardised their safety.
Thames Valley Police said officers attended after reports of disorder and a Section 35 Dispersal Order was issued to move people on from the area.

Israeli operations in Rafah, which borders Egypt, have closed a main crossing point for aid.
Humanitarian groups say this has worsened an already dire situation.
Around half of Gazaâs population took sanctuary there after Israel ordered evacuations from northern Gaza in October.
Gazaâs health authority appealed for international pressure to reopen access via the southern border to allow in aid, medical supplies and fuel to power generators and ambulances.
âThe wounded and sick suffer a slow death because there is no treatment and supplies and they cannot travel,â it said.
A foreign UN security staff member was killed on Monday when a UN-marked vehicle travelling to a hospital in Rafah was struck â the first international UN fatality in the Gaza war, a UN spokesperson said, bringing the total death toll of UN personnel to about 190.
