Once on holiday in Brittany some years ago with my husband and children . We met a couple with two children and their very first question to my husband was ‘What do you do?’ He told them he worked in Education.
Of course then, you feel you need to ask them the same question back.
‘We are actors, we’ve appeared in Coronation Street and other television series’
She said, ‘l was the the face in the Scottish Widow adverts’.
He said, ‘l was the ‘Very, Very nice AA man in the television advert.

They were a really nice couple and we spent the whole holiday together but l always had my suspicions that they had asked the question on purpose, so that we would ask the same question back!

I can talk to anyone but some people are really hard work.
In fact, they are so painfully hard to talk to… you need a drink to act like an anaesthetic for you to endure their company!

Stopped asking questions when I didn’t like the answers.

I don’t seem to have access to that part of the forum :joy::joy:

I have always thought it’s rude to ask too many questions. People don’t always want to be drawn out. Neutral topics are ok. As is finding common ground. Small talk isn’t meant to be personal at all.

I don’t think it’s rude but you don’t want to overdo it so that the person you’re talking to feels interrogated! That can happen particularly with quit or shy people who give one word answers so you feel compelled to ask them another question to keep it going :woman_shrugging:

Agreed.

I gave up on people who don’t engage quite a long time ago .
If they are young or shy it’s understandable otherwise it’s rude .

Some people ask questions for the sake of conversation but you don’t feel they are interested in the answers.

They may not be but at least they asked .
Also you have to graduate your answers to your audience .
If you are a Astrophysicist ( not that I know any ) it’s no use talking to people in terms they don’t understand their eyes will soon glaze over .

Yes, that’s true too, you can tell who is genuinely interested in other people and who isn’t
