You need something else–that is not enough—cereal, fruit…

Well, I haven’t eaten dinner yet. And, truth be told, I don’t have much of an appetite today. Nothing sounds good right now. Maybe I’ll be hungry by later. And anyway, I could use a day or two of backing off the calories a little bit.

By the way, congrats on your 5700 steps

Its difficult to eat when you are not really hungry, I know—you automatcally assume that it will help you lose weight—i guess it does sometimes–I know , Ive been there–went through a period when I just did not want to eat a thing—and I did lose weight–but it was just temporary.

thank for the congrats—my highest has been 6800, but Im hoping to get to 10,000 steps one day !!

Yeah, it’s usually just a temporary thing. But I still can’t force myself to eat when I’m just not hungry, whether it will help my weight, hurt it or not make a difference at all. That’s why I rarely eat breakfast. I’m just not hungry in the morning. Usually if I’m in the mood for breakfast foods (like cereals, eggs, that sort of thing) I just wait and have it for lunch. Like the other day for lunch I had scrambled egg whites (yes I eat whole eggs as well, but I’ll explain in a minute) with diced red and yellow bell pepper, corn and diced ham.

I purchase the “all whites” eggs in the carton because sometimes I’m in the mood for a big pile of scrambled eggs, but I don’t want all the fat and extra calories from 5 or 6 yolks. So what I’ll do is bust 2 eggs open, then use the liquid whites to make up the bulk. So I’m still getting the goodness and the nutrition from a couple of yolks (not to mention all the protein from the whites), plus enjoying a bigger pile of eggs without having to bust open half a dozen of them.

10,000 steps is a lot. I’d probably fall over after 100

i dont think we can buy those “all whites” eggs here–i love scrambled eggs too-but just use whole eggs …

I love whole eggs. But using the whites to add to 2 whole eggs is kind of my way of saving calories, not to mention fat and cholesterol. I know they’re saying now that dietary cholesterol doesn’t affect blood cholesterol, but since I’m taking medication for high cholesterol, I still watch how much I take in with what I eat. And until I found those whites, I was wasting too many precious egg yolks, as I would crack 2 whole eggs into the bowl and then 2-3 egg whites, tossing out the yolks. I felt so guilty doing that because the yolk contains so many vitamins and minerals. I’d occasionally cook the yolks for my dogs, but most of the time I was lazy about it and just tossed them out. Since finding the whites, I don’t have to do that anymore.

They come in a carton and look like this.

This brand is available in the UK - http://www.twochicks.co.uk/

Says they’re available at Sainsbury’s and I’ve heard some of you speak of that store before.

I always shop in Sainsburys—but never ever seen those before—I will look put for them tomorrow when I do my shop—thanks for the pic–makes it easier to find…

Well, the Two Chicks carton is a little different from the cartons we have here, but you get the general idea of what they look like.

For many years, we’ve had a product here called Egg Beaters. It’s been around since the 1970’s. While the whites have no added coloring (or anything else, for that matter, they’re simply egg whites and that’s all) Egg Beaters is also egg whites only, but made with food coloring to make them look like real whole eggs. For example, this is a picture of scrambled whole eggs…

People on low-fat, low-cholesterol diets could have their eggs and eat them, too… just without the fat and cholesterol that lies in egg yolk. You can use it to make quiche pies, egg salad, casseroles, etc.

HOWEVER, I stopped eating them when I started to actually pay attention to the ingredient panel (that’s before I became an avid label-reader like I am today - nothing goes into my basket without being assessed first, lol) and discovered that Egg Beaters adds not only food coloring to make them look like whole eggs, but a bunch of other junk as well like xanthan gum and guar gum (to this day I still don’t know what any of that is) and just extra ingredients that I didn’t really want to ingest. Mind you, this was back in my fat-phobic days when I avoided ALL things fat, including good fats, and anything with higher-than-normal amounts of cholesterol.

However, the all whites are just that… all whites. And nothing else. And, again, I still eat whole eggs, but I use the whites to make up the bulk if I’m eating a lot of eggs at once.

Well I’ve not been eating for last couple of days as we have both been unwell with a virus which made my sugar levels go down too low, but I just couldn’t eat, i’m back to eating small portions and today we are having:

Lasagna and Salad

Love lasagne-----

I haven’t been eating much lately either, but that’s because I’ve been depressed. Nothing serious, stuff that will pass, but when I’m feeling down in the dumps, I can’t eat. I suppose that’s a good thing. A friend of mine is the opposite… when she gets bummed out about stuff, she turns to food for comfort.

Every once in a great while I’ll have one of those “Oh who cares” moments when I’m feeling down and just eat whatever I want. But not very often because when I’m upset about something, it kills my appetite. I can be in the middle of a meal and if something happens within that time to upset me (bad news or something going on that’s getting on my nerves) I have to push the food away, I can’t eat anymore.

Maybe I should hire someone to come to my house and hack me off at mealtimes. That would be a surefire way for me to lose weight

Today for lunch I’m having salad. Since it’s my whole meal, I put on a bunch of healthy stuff like tomatoes, red and yellow bell pepper, red onion, shredded carrots and a 3-ounce chicken breast that I baked in sweet chili sauce, then sliced thin. And… some not so healthy stuff, like a tablespoon of crumbled bacon pieces.

I know how you feel Linda–I have been badly depressed over the last 2 years–on and off–thankfully at the moment feeling much better. Its hard to bother with anything when you feel like that, so hope that you can overcome that depression—but I know it is not easy. i tried medication from the doctor which made me feel worse–snd gave me awful nightmares. So i turned to the Internet and found some supplements that really helped me. But currently i do not need to even take those…

BTW—I looked for the eggwhites in Sainsburys–but no sign. my friend suggestd that they might be in the cooking/baking section, but neither of us could see them…

Yeah, I was on celexa for 3-4 years when I was diagnosed with GAD (generalized anxiety disorder - everything’s a freaking disorder these days) and while the medication did its job and helped me when I really needed it - because I was a complete mental mess - the side-effects of initially going on, plus the withdrawal from weaning myself off, my gawd, that was a nightmare in itself. I didn’t have bad dreams while on it, just very vivid ones.

What supplements did you find that helped?

Well, since they’re refrigerated, I doubt they’d be in the baking section, unless some stores have refrigerated shelves within those sections to put the eggs in. These are real liquid egg whites.

Healthy living

Hi Shelana, and welcome to OFF,…I see the My post You quoted was from some time ago.:-D…glad to say I Didn’t get tempted with any of that rubbish because as I said I didn’t have any in the house thank goodness…I’ve now reached a healthy BMI of 24,so My healthy eating has paid off…good luck.

Hi to Mariana and All on the diet journey…don’t give up,xx

I’ve recently been on cooking duty, for quite a few weeks now and I’ve been routinely cooking a simple but uber-tasty meal of meat and ratatouille most nights which we both love.
No spuds, just one form of meat and a wide variety of veg. It goes like this:

“Ratatouille”

1 full bag of broad beans
1/2 bag of stringless green beans (chopped in chunks)
2 leeks roughly chopped
1-2 courgettes cut in small chunks
1/2 pack baby corn cobs
1 bell pepper (any colour)
3-4 tomatoes in chunks
2 cloves garlic
Herbs and spices (oregano or piri piri usually)

Broad beans are a faff to prepare I know but really tasty and high in Amygdalin, the same substance in Apricot Kernels reknowned for killing cancers. A good preventative.

I fry the leeks, courgettes, pepper and garlic first whilst I par boil the stringless beans and baby corn cobs. Then throw everything together in a big pot with a little bit of water thrown in and let it simmer for 10-15mins.

It is delicious and satisfying and a great variety of veg in one meal.

We most like to eat this ratatouille with tasty lemon, lime and ginger chicken

Lemon, Lime, Ginger Chicken

2 plump chicken breasts scored twice diagonally at different angles to create a criss-cross pattern. More surface area for marinade.

I take a standard plastic freezer/sandwich bag and add to it:

The juice of one whole lemon and 1/2 a lime
1 clove of garlic finely chopped
1 good chunk of fresh ginger finely chopped
1 teaspoon of dark smoky paprika
1 teaspoon of turmeric
A little glug of white wine

Drop the chicken into the bag and tie/seal it and leave the breasts to marinate in there for at least 30mins to an hour.

To cook tip the entire contents of the bag into an oven proof container, cover with foil and cook for 40mins or so on 140-160C. It will cook in the juices which will keep it super moist and tasty.

When I serve I personally pour some of those juices over the veg. The turmeric, again, is a cancer deterrent.

After about a month of this regular meal, alternating between chicken, pork chops or steak with the ratatouille, my wife has lost well over 1/2 stone and that’s permanent loss not yo-yo diet loss that will come back. I’m giving her the goodness of garlic daily, plus ginger, paprika and turmeric (with the chicken) and the goodness from broad beans and string beans. Can only be good imo.

The chicken sounds good. I love experimenting with different recipes for chicken, as I eat quite a bit of the stuff.

I like the sound of the chicken too–sounds really tasty—maybe if i had someone cooking for me, i could get more enthusiastic Lol Lol.

Welcome Shelana—how nice to have another member in this little group–hope to hear more from you in time. But good luck in your weight loss journey.
