Eric found them in the loo
little & long and stuck with glue
So a taxi he rang
It arrived with a bang
Eric found them in the loo
little & long and stuck with glue
So a taxi he rang
It arrived with a bang
And took him instead to the zoo.
I met a man on market day…
I met a man on market day…
He claimed he had agoraphobia and lost his way
Are there any rules as to how many syllables we use in the lines?
I try to go 8.8.5.5.8 but a lot are much longer than this.
Sorry for asking - I’m a bit confused.
Sorry…but if you say it out loud my 2nd line has only 8 “syllables” !
- He 2. claimed 3. he had 4. Agoraphobia 5. and 6. lost 7. his 8. way
See? Q.E.D.
In answer to the number of syllables needed to make it a Limerick, Tezza had it correct when he started this thread.
As he explained below:
" A fresh start for limericks.
Lines 1. 2. And 5. Seven to ten syllables with the same verbal rhythm.
Lines 3. And 4. Five to seven syllables with the same verbal rhythm.
E.g. There was a young lady from Nice
Insisted on bathing in grease
She slid through the house
Tormenting her spouse
So he hid in the oven for peace."
Tezza’s rhymes perfectly. Unfortunately very few of ours do.
Okay Okay I agree with you about the syllables and rules and so on, I do know what a “proper” limerick is.
My reply to Carol was very much tongue in cheek, maybe I didn’t make that obvious enough!
On the other hand I come here to have a laugh and to have fun, so if the rules get a little blurred it’s not the end of the world imo. Apologies to all.
Let’s rewind then…
I met a man on market day…
Alas and alack he’d lost his way…
Better???
I met a man on market day…
Alas and alack he’d lost his way…
He asked me for tea
Actually Carol, talking of extra syllables, that last line is 8 instead of 5-7 max.too.
If we are nit picking, " he asked me for tea" (5) would have been a little better than “he asked me for a cup of tea” (8).
Its not always easy, is it.
Point taken. I was getting myself jumbled up.
I met a man on market day…
Alas and alack he’d lost his way…
He asked me for tea
I met a man on market day…
Alas and alack he’d lost his way…
He asked me for tea
And between you and me
I met a man on market day…
Alas and alack he’d lost his way…
He asked me for tea
And between you and me
I didn’t know quite what to say.
So we went to the cafe nearby
I met a man on market day…
Alas and alack he’d lost his way…
He asked me for tea
And between you and me
I didn’t know quite what to say.
So we went to the cafe nearby
We both had a slice of ham on rye
So we went to the cafe nearby
We both had a slice of ham on rye
But the bread was a bit stale
So we went to the cafe nearby
We both had a slice of ham on rye
But the bread was a bit stale
And he looked a tad pale
So we went to the cafe nearby
We both had a slice of ham on rye
But the bread was a bit stale
And he looked a tad pale
I honestly thought he would die.
So I phoned for the blues and twos
So I phoned for the blues and twos
Who asked me to give them some clues
