Coronavirus

I like to think that the British are sensible and level headed Longdogs, but what happens to those countries not as organised and wealthy as us…:frowning:

Tbh, I think we will all end up in the same boat.

Yes, I agree with all of the above. I am much, much more worried about a panicked population than the virus. Maybe all those end-of-the-world survivalists were not so crazy after all .

I’m certainly worried that this means people my age will never get a pension.

But the possible impact that I can see on the horizon following this is a fundamental change to the capitalist system. It’s pretty much giving carte blanche to socialism taking over. The reason for the marshall plan was to stop this post-WWII. But we are in a different world from then.

We could end up in an anarchic society if the virus gets out of hand but I do not think that will happen because they are taking action to get organised now.

All actions are now being taken to get this under control before things go crazy, but long term it will take forever and a day to recover and that will mean a very different economic model. However, everyone is working together now after an indecisive phase. When we work together here we do it well.

I agree.

No good hoping for the police to do the job.
They’re too busy chasing speeding motorists and investigating offensive words on Twitter.

Younger sis, who works at Sainsbury’s, has been advised by her GP surgery to isolate for 12 weeks! Whether she gets paid…well, as she said, she’ll have to survive on her state pension and no doubt put all expenditures on hold.

One P&D seeing me today reckoned I too should be s/i. I said…I’m moving in three weeks! And who else would shop for my sister, and top up her gas and electricity cards? And do shopping when her supplies run out?

Oh, hang on. There’s nothing on the shelves…

Some good news.
I hear that small businesses could be given a couple of months free of mortgage repayments. Hopefully, that should lighten the load due to a loss of customers.
I’d like to see the same done for council tax.

Iv,e been reading on how ‘greedy and selfish’ some people have been by stock piling food and toilet rolls.
The government have told many of us to self isolate for up to four months.
What are we supposed to live on for four months is we do not stock up?

Ben, is there anyone near you who could do some shopping for you occasionally?

Some more good news - just copied from Facebook:

Yes there is but I am OK as I have two daughters that see that I am OK but what about those that live in their own and have no-one.

I’m pleased to hear you have your daughters to help you out, Ben.

I’m hoping those who live alone will receive help from understanding neighbours if they have no close relatives.

They are posting leaflets through doors around the country and putting people in touch with neighbours who have registered. It’s very heart warming that something has been organised so fast for those who are at risk.

Virgin Australia has grounded its overseas fleet of planes.

The Aussie dollar is now below US60c lowest for 17 years.

Scotty from Marketing has banned overseas travel and indoor gatherings of over 100 people.

In addition to what Lindyloo has posted.

Report on this evenings news. This may be complete B.S BUT they say that a certain anti-malarial drug kills the virus.
They also said that a combination of HIV drugs kills the virus.

It is beginning to look like we are close to finding a cure.

Gatwick airport announced 200 job cuts. All those resident businesses depend on footfall. All airports have operating companies that charge rental commission as well as the usual rents to all the businesses based there. The operating companies have to break even too.

They used to be owned by BAA but are now all owned by different companies many not British. Gatwick is owned by a US based fund. They also own Edinburgh airport. It’s quite bizarre when you start looking at the underlying financial arrangements of some of our most important assets. In normal times it doesn’t matter but at times of such change it exposes the massive risks.

Just got an email from David Austin Roses this evening.
They are closing their rose gardens, restaurant, gift shop . . the lot, until this gets sorted.
They said they wanted to protect their staff.

Well Selfridges stores have closed.

Antiretrovirals have been extremely expensive. Perhaps with a surge of demand the cost will fall. I think a vaccine will be found soon because working together rather than for self interest I’m sure there will be a result.

The World Health Organization recommended Tuesday that people suffering COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking ibuprofen, after French officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus.

The warning by French Health Minister Veran followed a recent study in The Lancet medical journal that hypothesised that an enzyme boosted by anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen could facilitate and worsen COVID-19 infections.
