Coronavirus

Ah, CNN. CNN is an extreme leftist “news” organization which is owned by Ted Turner, husband of “Hanoi Jane” Fonda. Hanoi Jane is more communist than Stalin was. She is so RED that she practically glows in the dark. :twisted:

Peston thinks 4 months quarantine for the over 70’s on the way…

My hair will be down to my knees by then… :surprised:

Spain has gone on a nationwide lock down. All bars, restaurants, movie theaters, and all other stores are to be closed EXCEPT for grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations. As we speak, the people of Spain are being advised to stay home and self isolate.

As of Monday night at 12pm, the UK and Ireland will be added to the ban on travel to the U.S. Returning U.S. citizens are required to self isolate for 14 days.

You can add France to that.
They’ve announced tonight that as of midnight all non-essential public places are to be shut … pubs, nightclubs, cinemas, cafes … leaving only banks, supermarkets and pharmacys open.

Never mind your wig … did you read the rest of the list?

Other measures already being planned include:

the forced requisitioning of hotels and other buildings as temporary hospitals;

the requisitioning of private hospitals as emergency hospitals;

temporary closure of pubs, bars and restaurants - some time after next weekend’s ban on mass gatherings;

emergency manufacture by several companies of respirators that would be necessary to keep alive those who become acutely ill;

the closure of schools for perhaps a few weeks, but with skeleton staff kept on to provide childcare for key workers in the NHS and police.

Eee … this is all getting a little too much like 28 Days Later for me.
There’s too much media speculation which is downright scary.

My friends husband had gone to Gran Canaria with the lads for a few days and he was due home today. He was sat on the plane for ages and they thought he wasn’t going to get home. He’s home now but I bet he was worried there. There are no cases in Gran Canaria.

My manageress was due to go to Benidorm tomorrow with her boyfriend and a group of friends. They decided against it, they are now in Blackpool! A holiday resort in the North West of England.

You have to wonder what the world will be like when this is all over.

I’ve been thinking that too Annie.

Slightly depopulated, but probably not as much as some people are thinking.

Certainly, investments are suffering but, hopefully, they will bounce back again when it is all over.

The government needs to listen to the scientists

Hi

The Government Advisers have genuine concerns about the number of deaths that would result from a prolonged period of self isolation for the elderly.

We have longstanding plans in place for serious outbreaks, whether they be natural or the result of a biological attack.

Panic is the surest way of making things worse.

It will take years for finances to recover from this. It’s massive economically, like a world war. But I was thinking more in term of social structure, culture, the normal life we knew. The impact will take a while to sink in but it’s profound.

I find this government assumption particularly patronising. The majority of people are far too sensible for such nonsense. People want this out of the way asap not be part of some prolonged social experiment which could dramatically fail.

“In their letter the scientists also questioned the government’s view that people will become fed up with restrictions if they were imposed too soon.”

Mr V is an ex pharma bigwig.

Swim people are panicking far more right now because the state’s plans appear leaderless, rudderless and full of blah blah. Many have been left with no guidance and up the creek with no paddle. This is disgraceful, shoddy and needs urgent action to give us a strong solution not piffle. What will happen next are numerous u-turns. Wait and see. Very disappointing.

Yes, I know what you mean. the Tv media are all a flutter. They are acting like it is the end of the world. . That is only fanning the flames of peoples emotions. It is like screaming “FIRE !” in a crowded theater. Stupid buggers.

They should be talking in a calm, rational manner.

Hi

The Government needs to listen to the right scientists.

None of those spouting off are specialists as is mentioned in the report.

The UK has a highly qualified and knowledgeable resource in Porton Down.

Porton Down has two sides to it, the Military Side and the Civil Defence side.

The Civil Defence side is Public Health England, which is based there.

The problem the Government has is one of capacity, not strategy.

We had had years of cutbacks, which started well before the Conservatives got in, so I am not making Political points, the situation is far too serious for that.

It was the Cold War Bonus as it was called after the breakup of the former USSR.

This lead to a 90% cut in trained staff and resources.

Such is life.

Porton Down? Perhaps the Government should be listening to actual clinicians eh? They are the ones on the ground dealing with the reality.

Some sensible, rational news.

The states governors are calling up the National Guard (a reserve branch of the U.S. Army). The N.G. is handing out food to the needy. But, perhaps more importantly, trained male and female N.G. nurses have set up testing facilities in the parking lots of WalMart etc. People merely need to drive up, stay in their cars, and a nurse, in full biohazard suits, swabs their nose and throat. The testees are given a test number and are instructed to call back in 72 hours.

Pretty cool. :smiley:

Where’s Dr Strangelove when you need him?

Me too. :frowning:

Even if they did want to quarantine sick people in hotels and other empty buildings, who is going to look after them, or will they just be left to die?
There are not nearly enough trained medical staff to cope with something like this - nor masks and medicines to go round.
