I agree. The elderly are NOT EXPENDABLE. We must raise Holy Hell about this.
Perhaps not the right time to mention Hell Bakerman
Who with?
I suppose someone should start a petition?
Personally I think schools should stay open .
Children don’t get CV seriously but are carriers .
Better they stay all together .
On the other hand if they stay at home they will all sit on their devices and not go out I suppose
Perhaps they need Corona parties? No, not the beer… When I was a child whenever a local kid had mumps, measles or chicken pox all the kids would go to his party so they all got it together and got it over with. I had them all because of this.
If you are over 50 keep away from kids.
I understand that they want to keep schools open for practical/financial reasons, but I was in a hospital the other day taking an elderly relative home from an appointment. There was an elderly man in a wheelchair in front of us being pushed by what must have been his daughter while his assumed 8-10 year old granddaughter in her uniform was right there with them holding grandad’s hand. A beautiful picture of family happiness normally.
You know who they are, as well as I do. Send them a Western Union telegram and let them know, in no uncertain terms, how you feel about them. Maybe like this. “The elderly are NOT expendable, How dare you”.
Bakerman I hate to tell you this but we are .
We are the oldies who block up the health system have pensions and generally are past our sell by dates .
We are totally expendable .
Sorry to hear that you think like that. Give up if you want, but I plan on being around for much longer.
Hi
I disagree with many on here.
It was well structured and accurate.
The broadcast was based on behavioural analysis, which is remarkably accurate.
First get their attention.
Many will lose loved ones.
That is absolutely correct
Secondly the advice to self isolate if you have symptoms.
Again, based on Scientific Evidence.
The symptoms take time to develop, so 7 days is enough.
We may not have all the trained staff or hospitals beds we used to have, but then nobody likes paying tax.
That is obvious from most of the posts on here.
We only have a third of the hospital beds that Germany has, but they are a higher tax economy.
What we do have are very sophisticated algorithms to map the course of of any large outbreak or incident.
The virus will not peak for months, it is simply not practical to self isolate for that long.
We need to maintain supply chains.
Closing schools means parents are not at work, affecting supply chains.
Forget the shop workers who serve you, it is much more fundamental than that.
Around 80% of egg packers are female who work in school hours.
During school holidays they share childcare, simply not an option for months.
Vast numbers of NHS employees, both Doctors and Nurses are mothers, they work during school hours.
They pay for childcare during school holidays and take their holidays then.
Not an option for months on end.
Irrespective of what we do, there will be deaths.
The two scientists with Boris treated us like adults, they know their stuff.
Breaking News:
Australia’s chief medical officer has told premiers, chief ministers and the Prime Minister that mass gatherings of more than 500 people should be cancelled amid fears about the spread of coronavirus.
The leaders are currently considering that advice at a meeting in Sydney.
The Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne had already been cancelled today, and spectators for cricket games banned.
Questions about crowds have also been hanging over NRL, soccer and AFL matches as well as the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
A press conference is expected after the leaders’ COAG meeting finishes this afternoon.
BTW COAG = Council of Australian Governments
In NSW there have been no reported cases outside Sydney that I have heard of but every state and territory has cases

Something to consider.
There has been some speculation, most notably on the evening news, that the coronavirus will begin to fade out when warm weather begins. It has occurred to me that that is unlikely. Why ?
The seasons are reversed south of the equator. Today, for example, is was 79 F 9 (26.1 C.) in Sydney Aus. Yet the virus cases are not not dying out. They are, in fact, climbing. Moreover, Brazil, which of course, sits directly on the equator has a growing number of new cases.
Additionally, the virus seems to be quite happy living in the human body where the body temp is 98.6 F (37 C.)
If anyone can think of any reason why my thoughts on this subject are wrong, please let me know why.
Hi
Herd Immunity , low level infections promote Antibodies
I think Donald was forced into his current strategy.
One thing is perfectly clear: no one knows exactly what to do, because this has never happened before. The steps being taken are because medics and mathematicians have analysed and compared the statistics and strategies taken by other countries, and enforced those with the best results.
It’s not what I feel it’s just facts I’m afraid .
Everyone on this forum fits the above to a greater or lesser degree and I would add that many younger people feel we’re an expensive burden on society!
BUT…we’re going to get through this far more easily than those who have jobs and children, so we just have to grin and bare it!!:shock:
Hi Bakerman
I was only typing what they were saying as I was watching it on the news. They were going too fast for my typing speed but I figured it would be in the papers anyway but wanted to try and pick out the important bits.
I agree with you. Fortunately I live in a quieter more rural area and not being able to walk far getting out to socialise has always been difficult anyway so have been mostly housebound for many years (other than been taken to the odd family event a couple of times a year).
I do go out with my dog daily though. A mobility scooter has its advantages as I can whizz off in another direction if I see someone coming immediately on my path. We usually go out when no-one else is about anyway as my dog is not good with other dogs and can’t be let off if someone else is already in the field with their dog.
Our clocks go back in a couple of weeks after which it will be lighter much earlier so I will be switching to very early morning walks so we can get out and back home without seeing another person.
I usually get food delivered fortnightly anyway but the supermarket I use has no free slots until April and it is a worry if they won’t bring the shopping in as I would also be unable to carry the bags in myself.
I have tinned and frozen stuff but fresh stuff (salad, yoghurts etc) will run out by next week.
Also do have 2 small camping stoves and some fuel though (incase of power cuts) its never been used so I don’t know whether ‘camping gaz’ evaporates if not used within a certain time as they were bought in case we had disruption from a no deal brexit (the first time around) so some tinned stuff was bought end of 2018 and fuel early 2019. Some cans sound like nothing in them, some sound like there’s a small amount of liquid swishing about inside if you pick the canister up gently. (small canisters meant to be resealable but none have been used yet).
My biggest worry with powercuts is of course I use a mobility scooter which needs charging every night. I thought of getting a ‘spare’ folding scooter incase mobility shops are shut down so repair guys can’t come out but that won’t solve my problem if power is affected and I can’t charge either scooter up to get the dog out!
I agree with what you say Swimmy I think the government actions taken so far are logical and correct and I understand exactly what they are trying to achieve .
It would be all too easy to bring in drastic measures too early this is a long term thing this virus will be with us forever now like the common cold.
My only deviation from the advice given is that I have chosen to distance myself from contact with others already because I am 71 with serious health issues and can cope with isolation it is no big deal to me.
It was said last night that the biggest threat to us all is those who are not taking 'the coming storm ’ seriously and ignoring advice on hygiene measure and isolating when having early syptoms.
