But you don’t carry it without symptoms forever. It’s not like herpes or HIV. I think it’s spreading through shopping and deliveries.
That’s interesting.
I can’t remember when the first report came out which actually named or referred to this virus.
I think the first confirmed case in the UK was end of January, then sometime in February it changed to an epidemic, followed by pandemic more recently.
Lots and lots of people had this in November , me included . It hit my brain first , struggling to remember what I was going to do and how . I had to keep going back to bed with shivering attacks and a cough .Particularly noticed I’d lost my sense of smell and taste a couple of days later .
A friend had rather more serious symptoms with a high temperature I learned later ,was coughing blood up in her phlegm . Her GP said she had a deep lung infection .
Her husband wasn’t affected .
How have you come to that conclusion Annie?
Very close to the beginning of Brexit then.
Coincidence?
I doubt it, though.
Fascinating discussion on AM this morning. The whole 30 minutes was devoted to the pandemic but the most interesting part was a discussion between the head of the think tank The Gratton Institute and an Infectious Disease Specialist from the Australian National University.
They basically agreed that Australia had been lucky because it saw what happened elsewhere first but was still two weeks late in acting to lock down the nation. That the federal government was lead by the state governments rather than the other way round.
There are initial signs that the curve is being flattened quite dramatically from actions taken two weeks ago but they warned that the lockdown cannot continue indefinitely. They said that probably the lockdown will be lifted slightly to allow infection rates to increase then reimposed in an effort to achieve herd immunity without flooding the hospital system to the point of break down.
Most interestingly they thought that the ban on overseas travel in and out of Australia would continue for 18 months to two years with any arrivals forced into compulsory isolation for that entire time as is happening now.
International Trade however will normalise as it is a low risk activity. “normalise” being very subjective.
They warned that our coming winter will be a very testing time and quite unpredictable.
The broadcast is here:
The discussion I refer to starts at about 9mins in
BTW the first local C-19 death occurred in Wollongong Hospital yesterday. A 75 yo passenger from the cruise ship Ovation of the Seas.
Brexit is yesterday’s fish and chip wrapper.
Coincidental that Brexit and Covid started at around the same time, in this country at least.
Brexit may not be today’s news, I agree, but it is still rolling on and Boris keeps assuring us that the talks will not be extended past December.
Of course, the EU might well have fallen apart by then! So perhaps the coronavirus matter may have helped us in a way.
…or recovery from Covid could make nations realise they need friends and even strengthen the EU as they start the long process of rebuilding. Could go either way.
Anyway Britain’s dream of the demise of the EU is very unlikely now they have more important things to worry about. The world is going to be a very different place when this is over.
Do you mean my comment about deliveries?
Al Jazeera showed a report about the effects on Australia. A peach farmer wondering how he will get labour to pick produce. According to the report they rely on a regular supply of travellers and backpackers. They showed the PM saying how successful the Australian measures were and how good Australia is at testing everyone.
I had a dry cough for about two to three months from mid october onwards after a bug I caught after going for a fabulous autumn mini break in Europe. I saw my GP in Jan about a chest x ray and had a spirometry. Was prescribed an inhaler. It definitely wasn’t Covid but I am so glad it got better. There were some nasty bugs going around in the autumn and a number of colleagues had similar. This has different symptoms. A friend’s colleague has it. She is in a great deal of pain which she is finding v hard to deal with. She has breathlessness but 111 have not told her to go to hospital but prescribed antibiotics. Other than the cough, it’s the pain and fever that are marked symptoms. The pain can be excrutiating for some. My friend is very worried about her.
I had a nasty virus back in November which left me with vertigo.
A couple of months ago my daughter had one with very similar symptoms to Covid 19 but we hadn’t really heard much about it then.
I wish we could have tests to see if we had it!
I’m awake because something woke me up. It’s either loud tinitus or there’s a rave up top the Gorge. I can’t tell if the loud “beat” is inside or outside my head!
Hi
The EU falling apart will not help us in any way.
We will still need to trade after Brexit.
The UK will not be immune from the Global Economic Downturn which will result from the virus.
Our Government is spending vast amounts of money at the moment, all of which will have to be recovered.
Brexit need not be delayed by the Virus, but we still need to Trade.
We need to avoid a recession turning into a Depression.
Our Pensions still have to be paid for.
Nobody is immune from the fall out from this, myself included.
I don’t know if it’s true but I have heard people are blaming 5 G masts and vandalising them. I keep hearing a low rumble at certain times in the front room and have wondered if it’s down to smart metres 5 G etc.
Hope you managed to source some loo roll TessA!
Swim have you seen the news reports? This is predicted as already worse than the depression. Unsurprising really. I have already discussed with colleagues that our pensions will be wiped. The IMF is panicking. I can see that our entire capitalist system could be replaced with something else altogether. Starting to look at cash in a new light - as potential monopoly money. As for Brexit, it will no longer be relevant. The EU is likely to be split apart anyhow.
Hi
Yes, I have seen the news reports.
I am no economist.
I have my son living with, he is and so are his mates.
I rely on them.
Guy is now a disabled epileptic, he still has his brain except when he has seizures.
Little nuggets of gold.
The Banks have stopped paying bonuses in accordance with Government Instructions.
They did this 4 days after the last bonuses where paid., which in some cases were of over a £million for the previous month.
Some Private Hedge Funds have made £Billions by shorting.
Such is life, the rest of us will bear the brunt of this.
I have a defined benefit Government Pension.
I fully expect this to be cut by 20%.
My Private Pensions I have insurance against them being cut.
A 30% fall in house prices will mean I lose £55k, a fraction of what others will lose.
That is irrelevant as the house will remain the same and lower priced houses will be the first to recover.
Car prices will collapse, nobody will be earning enough to finance new ones.
My last Ex, an Estate Agent, has been laid off.
Her income has collapsed and she cannot afford to pay the payments on her BMW.
They where all self employed to avoid tax.
Times are changing for all, some more than others.
I am sure they will do something to stop all of that. They are discussing a pause. Treating things in a way that has never happened before. The IMF are talking of dipping into their reserves. I think there will be some sort of work around to prevent depression. But economies are likely to have business as usual halted. As in the usual trading. I am less worried about house prices going down than everything we take for granted becoming excessively expensive. Spend now because at least money still has value.
The Federal Government changed the conditions of the backpackers visas so they can work more weeks than they were previously allowed. Backpackers will receive no government assistance so they need work and they can’t get out of the country.
Win - Win for everyone
Part of our foreign aid is offering work visas to Pacific Islanders to come and pick our harvest for us (at Australian wage rates)
As for testing it is true we are doing more testing than the UK but remember the PM is known as Scotty from Marketing for a reason.
