Yep, some of the run of the mill health maintenance drugs probably, long term do more harm than alcohol .
It could be your diet rather than the booze. Kidney function starts failing for everyone at a certain age so you have done very well if youāre only just now starting to see a change. But in my opinion life should be quality over quantity. Have to say my body wouldnāt be able to handle whisky and I am in my 50s. Gives me a terrible headache the next day. Only for emergencies in my case such as a hot toddy for a cold, although tbh I would always choose brandy as I think that is less harsh on the liver.
They did a test on different alcohols somewhere and between whisky brandy and gin, brandy was less destructive to liver tissues, Gin was the worst.
Thanks Annie, Iāve been on ramipril since 2014. Among some other side effects Iāve noticed just lately are loss of balance, tinnitus, urinating four or five times each night, and a cough.
Iām afraid Iāve taken things into my own hands Annieā¦
The doctor would probably put me on an alternative and something equally as damagingā¦
I had Ramipril (Pre Covid) had to come of it after a month, the cough was diabolical!
Iām trying to phase it out Spitty, but I understand its best not to go cold turkey with it, so thatās why Iāve cut it down to just taking it on even numbered days for a while.
It sounds a lot to me. I couldnāt drink a bottle of Scotch in a year!
However, on my weekly shopping trips I am staggered at the amount of booze older people have in their trolleys and very little food. My son was with me last week and I mentioned it to him and we both agreed itās their money and they can do what they like as long as they are not driving under the influence to collect their next lot.
Fingers crossed for you OGF, youāre on more medication than me. I only take a couple of BP tablets each morning and amitriptyline at night along with paracetamol for the arthritic pain.
As to food, my main meal is always ready meals so I donāt eat as well as I did. I have a daily multi-vitā.
Not for long GhF, Iām going to have a spring clean out of all my medsā¦
If you added up all the whiskey Iāve drunk in my 72 years Rose, It wouldnāt half fill a litre bottleā¦I hate the stuffā¦
I donāt like it OGF, I Love it.
Take care.
I didnāt like it neat or with water, I like it with lemonade. So far
today I had almost a litre of water instead.
Water is cheaper too.
Never seem to point of a scotch shandy, neat or nowt.
At this point I should confess
And you scotch purists may want to cover your eyes
But I am very partial to a Jack Daniels and Coca Cola, with ice ā¦ā¦
And in the summer, for pudding, with ice-cream
Now that is unhealthy!
I think that when I was a toddler my mum gave me a little taste at a dinner party. I had been pestering that I wanted to try what was in her glass and was given a little on a teaspoon or something. All I remember is that it tasted like perfume (Iād probably tried that too at some point). I could not understand why the adults wanted to drink such a disgusting substance and have had a prejudice against it ever since. Itās like medicine.
I think warm whisky and honey might be nice poured over a home made vanilla ice cream. Or maybe an irish coffee espresso. Like an affogato
When I lived in the UK I was quite partial, on a hot day, to drinking a shandy.
For reasons best known to nobody, one day during the pandemic I was sitting in the garden and decided to make a shandy. Drinking it I had no idea why I used to like them at all - my first and last shandy in something like 40 years.
I love a cold shandy on a hot day sat in the garden. It seems just the right time to have oneā¦ sorry you lost your taste for it Bruceā¦perhaps its Australia beer that ruined it.
Yes, Youāre probably right, Aussie beer is just too delicious to be ruined by diluting it with anything.
Matter of fact I feel like one now.
AnnieS, I think Gin tastes like perfume but not Scotch. I have tried blood orange gin, itās not so bad.
At the moment Iāve a 500ml bottle of water that Iām downing, its
cheaper than Scotch too. Itās tap water.
