Your experience of spirits/ghosts and the unexplained

Sitting here hit with the strong smell of smoke again. No one is up and I am alone getting ready to head out. But I decided to stop and write this account and maybe see what others have experienced.

When we bought our first home we were chuffed to bits. We boxed our items and hired a van and moved all our items ourselves. However, the morning following our first night, we were met with the bathroom door wide open, light on and tap running on full.

After that it was the sudden strong smell of smoke around the house. The sound of walking above our heads in the unoccupied rooms upstairs. The opening and closing of the cupboard doors in the kitchen that would wake us out of our sleep at night. Sometimes, successive loud ā€˜bangā€™ ā€˜bangā€™ ā€˜bangā€™ would get us up and down the stairs the first few weeks, if not months.

Over the years, weā€™ve gotten used to it, even the kids. If we bought something new into our home, we knew there would be ā€˜activityā€™. So, you can imagine the activity when the kids arrived, and yes, it was mayhem for years. With the children crying suddenly or gurgling at something during the night. Or the toys coming on loud and bright in the night, rousing everyone in the house. The hairs on the back of our necks standing on end for no reason, or the sudden breeze in a closed room. If I said our lights flicker on and off regularly, it would be an understatement, and years of electricians have not changed it. We have taken videos with the kids dancing and laughing, i.e., birthdays and celebrations, and they are always accompanied by lots of circular lights of all shapes and sizes (orbs apparently) dancing around them.

One may argue Iā€™m a pragmatist at heart, but Iā€™m not ignorant of things that exist beyond our understanding. We have learned to live with it, and at most times, ignore the more obvious activity when it happens, and tend not to give it more time and energy than needed.

Have you had any experiences of the unexplained?

Love it , yes heard of it happening many times . Sounds a friendly ghost or poltergeist as is known when objects moved and loud bangs. There seems no explanation other than people who once lived there, and just energy, of what , maybe left over from possible trauma .

The study of the paranormal is very interesting .

Where abouts do you live have you looked into the homes history , the land too .

Oofā€¦ The paranormal phenomena. Yes, Iā€™ve had quite a few. I wrote a few essays about it, regarding what Iā€™ve been through growing up.

As Iā€™m weary of putting links in these forums, I wonā€™t but Iā€™ve them in my blog.

As Iā€™m currently watching Armageddon the film, it reminds me of the summer of 69 and the moon landingā€¦ A familiar spiritā€¦ Tobacco smoke with the hint of apple. Yes, gramps added slices of apples in his tobacco pouch. He said it gave it a lovely flavour.

I used to be clairvoyant, Iā€™m now clairaudient. Meaning I hear the spirits more than I see them these days.

Always been fascinating experiences with one or two being horrifyingā€¦ Iā€™ll leave it there.

Hi Susan,

House was built in 1890s so very, very old indeed. Both the married occupants lived and died in the house in their 90s.

And yes, I believe they are not malicious in anyway, just curious.

There are more ā€˜thingsā€™ around this earth than we will ever know or meet.
Decades ago in the early '70s, we bought a large run down Victorian detached villa that still exhibited poorly restored bomb blast damage. We bought it for an unbelievably good price with the intention of completely renovating it. To save money, we moved in and occupied just 4 rooms that were just about habitable. Not long after I was woken by the sound of glass smashing in the fire hearth below and I just assumed it was some nutter outside and the sound had carried into the house. Next morning I actually found a smashed glass vase in the hearth and guessed it had somehow fallen from the mantle over night. My wife insisted that the vase was yet to be unpacked but I was not so confident. The 2nd night I was aware that there was a noise from the bathroom but then fell asleep. Next morning I found all of our toothbrushes in the bath and that did it for me. Within a day or so I had a rabbi come around and he mentioned a ā€˜dybbukā€™ that possibly needed to be detached from something that happened in the house some time ago. He returned to carry out a ceremony to re-join it with itā€™s long departed host and that was that. The occurrences never returned and we renovated all 3 upper floors and the semi basement without any further incidents.
Do I believe in the supernatural? I really do not know, but I was glad the rabbi came and did what he didšŸ‘

Thank you so much for sharing!
And understand about the aspect of privacy.
I have always been interested in the paranormal, and yes, like you, I have some very interesting if not chilling stories I can put in the forum, but this is the ā€˜tamestā€™ and more frequently occurring.

The toothbrushes in the bath - now thatā€™s scary.
We were told to ā€˜get the house blessedā€™ so to speak. But we have opted against it.
This is because we believe there is more than one ā€˜entityā€™ in this home. They exist here with us, and they can be ā€˜feltā€™ around our home. There are times when I will head upstairs and itā€™s all good, not a second thought. Then there will be another time, when I know that whatever I need to do, I need to do it quickly and leave. It is simplify a ā€˜feelingā€™.

I do not understand your reasoning behind that. I would do all within my power to render my home as safe as possible.
After the rabbi came and did what he did, we completely renovated the house and the sold it for such an unexpected price, we move on not needing mortgage. To be mortgage free at 33 completely changed our lives for the better, but thatā€™s another chapter.

Thatā€™s a long story that goes beyond this forum about why we opted against it. But one of the reasons was we have never lived in a place that didnā€™t have some kind of ā€˜activityā€™. A ā€˜cleansingā€™ from experience, does not always work.

Had a strange experience once , both my wife and myself felt a cat jump up on our bed, we had a cat at the time, but she was shut in the kitchen, we used to have a cat that regularly came round, then suddenly stopped, ?, I sometimes get the smell of cigarettes, my mum used to smoke, so maybe it was her, !,

That reads as though you are some kind of magnet for unexplained forces. Iā€™m glad I do not have you for my neighbour

Yes, you do get used it.
Our previous house was built in 1560, Grade II Listed, all full of beams.
The very first day we were there, things went missing and then came back again a week later, even saw our Cat Coco playing with something or someone, but was never frightened. We always knew there was someone or something in the house, mostly in the bedroom.
One day we invited our friend round for dinner and asked him to bring his camera, he is a well know Physic Photographer, he came into the lounge, could not feel anything, then into the kitchen, nothing, he went upstairs to the bedroom with me tagging behind him, and said there is something over there next to the window and bed, he got his camera out, took a photo, then played it back to me, and there she was a young Lady in Victorian days. (see photo).

That is an incredible story and photo! Thank you for sharing.
I think seeing those ā€˜orbsā€™ around my children when they were playing was a strong indicator for me that something was there.

I think I have covered this subject more than once in the past

And I donā€™t think any of them exist.

Just reading this thread is making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and causing goosebumps on my arms!

My first experience of some ā€œunexplained phenomenaā€ was in my early 20s, when my husband and I, with our 3 cats, moved into an old married quarter on an Army barracks.
Although it was a fairly old house, probably one of the early married quarters to be built there, probably in the early 1900s but it had just been refurbished with some central heating radiators installed, a new bathroom suite and fully redecorated and new carpeting, so I was initially very pleased to be given such a clean and bright married quarter.
My pleasure was very short-lived!
The first time I went upstairs, I felt a cold ā€œpresenceā€ at the turn of the stairs on the half-landing outside the bathroom, which made the hairs on my neck stand up and gave me goosebumps. I tried to dismiss the feeling but every time I went up and down the stairs, I kept getting these unpleasant cold sensations, a feeling someone was watching me and thinking I thought I saw someone but they disappeared when I turned to look.

My 3 cats must have also felt something, I think. They had been in a cattery for the first couple of days of our move until we got settled in and after I had collected them and brought them to our new home, I let them out of their travelling baskets in the hall - they explored the ground floor quite happily and then the 3 of them gathered in the hall and started to race up the stairs together - as they approached the top of that first flight of stairs and got near to that half-landing, they stopped, flattened their ears, crouched low and started to growl - Iā€™ve only rarely seen them do that and only if they are really frightened. All 3 cats very slowly retreated, crawling down the stairs backwards, as if they were too scared to turn their back on whatever they were growling at - Iā€™d never seen a cat crawl downstairs backwards before.
From that day, they would never go upstairs - they seemed too scared to even venture across the hall to get to the sitting room.
In our previous home, the cats would follow me everywhere and liked to be in whatever room I was in but in that house, they preferred to stay outside until it was time to eat or sleep and would only come in and out by the kitchen door and wouldnā€™t venture into any other part of the house.

I must admit, I wished I could stay out of the house too - I was aware of that ā€œpresenceā€ whenever I was upstairs - it moved between the first landing and the top landing, sometimes hovering outside the bathroom door, sometimes hovering outside the bedroom door. I was aware of it as a cold feeling and a shadow that I could see from the corner of my eye - but whenever I turned my head to look at the shadow straight on, it disappeared.
I canā€™t explain it very well because it was more of a feeling than any tangible activity but it felt malevolent and scary.

Anyway, I stuck it for 3 months then, after Iā€™d been off work with flu and had to stay in bed for a week, in the house on my own, I got so scared about being aware of this shadow hovering just outside my bedroom door and feeling it follow me every time I had to use the bathroom, I decided to apply for a new married quarter.
When I went to see the Quartermaster to plead my case, he said he wasnā€™t surprised - apparently, the reason theyā€™d given that quarter a full re-furbishment was because so many previous tenants had refused to stay in the quarter and cited similar reasons to me - the QM hoped that putting in some central heating and slapping some brighter coloured paint on the walls might solve the problem of the cold presence and scary shadow!

I never did get to the bottom of what that unexplained phenomena was all about - I was just glad to be offered a newly-built house in another part of the camp - they didnā€™t have any houses small enough for just a couple so we had to pay a higher rent for a 3 bedroomed family quarter - but it was worth it to be away from that house! - as soon as we moved into our new home, after their initial tour of inspection, the cats reverted to their old habits of sleeping in whatever room took their fancy, upstairs and downstairs.

ghost posts maybe from old forum

Oh yes - Iā€™d forgotten thatā€¦

At Christmas I had a full house of guests (family)ā€¦ my house is very old and dates back to the middle 1700sā€¦ I had had an unexplained experience of walking down the hall and as it turned into what is now the kitchen stepping aside as there was an elderly gentleman coming in the opposite direction. It was only a fleeting glance and feeling but in my minds eye it was an older kindly looking man with grey hairā€¦ I didnā€™t mention this experience to any of the family for fear of spooking them and I wanted a lovely family Christmasā€¦ however my daughter came to me describing the exact same experienceā€¦ same place and the elderly gentlemanā€¦ we didnā€™t feel threatened just surprised at our near collisionsā€¦ no idea what it means if anything, but he is welcome as far as Iā€™m concerned.
