Would any would be weight ‘losers’ like to join me?

Dandysmom and Maryl, according to Gary Taubes who wrote ‘Why do we get fat’, carbohydrates are the most fattening. That’s why people like me should avoid them.

My brothers wife is in a constant struggle to hang to the little flesh she has … why is life so unfair?! :107: :017:

It is unfair, NG! I feel a tad guilty at posting about needing to gain weight on this thread when everyone is striving so very hard to lose it.

Good luck to you all, may it come off slowly but surely.

Do keep on posting Dandysmom, it makes it more interesting to read the experiences of others. Light, as well as heavy weights…

At one time when I was in my early 30s I was up to 180 pounds! I’d always been on the chubby side, but that was a bit ridiculous as I’m only 5’ tall. And was interested in someone and wanted to trim down to a shall we say, more desireable weight. So I didn’t go on any official diet, just ate soup, saltine crackers and milk, or just a salad, for lunch; on the weekend I ate whatever I wanted, so I didn’t feel too deprived. It took about 8 months but I got down to 130! And never got the guy!

Life isn’t fair is it Nuttygran:-(

It all comes down to metabolism. If you have an under par thyroid or low core body temperature you can’t burn of calories like the average person. Aerobic exercise is what is needed to raise metabolism but if you can’t do that then steer clear of refined processed carbohydrates -(starch and sugar)- as these slow down metabolism. Don’t eat less calories as that can slow your metabolism even more. What you need is to eat proteins and spicy foods to raise metabolism. If you take your temperature first thing in the morning and it is below the normal range you have a slow metabolism and a possible low functioning thyroid. Hope this helps.:023:

And who might that have been Eileen? It was his loss
The most I’ve ever weighed was about 7 stone and I would love to get to say … 6 1/2. I have no appetite until the evening so to keep healthy eat what’s good for you, fruit, veg, salad, fish, nuts. I eat cheese but that’s not going to add many pounds on. Plus the 3 pints of full fat milk a day and those ghastly prescribed drinks.
What can I eat in those lines which will help me gain weight?

I was talking to the people at the British Lung Foundation today and they said that when you suffer with lung conditions the effort to breathe uses up a lot of energy so some people actually lose weight.

Are you actually very underweight or just a slightly built person marl?

It would help if you could put in more meals during the day. A lot of what you are eating is what people would eat when trying to cut down apart from the 3 pints of full cream milk  Where are the starchy foods in your eating regime? Potatoes bread and cereals would help put weight on.

doctor sent me for blood test, results in couple of weeks, think I need more excercise but hips dissagree, even with the line dancing shoes, that helped no end last year, have lost their edge and my distance walking has gone down again, I think the gym is too far, need to get on with the wii again

good quality chocolate is good for balancing your weight, it has feel good hormones as well but not more then i portion a day lol

Chocolate in moderation isn’t that bad in fact dark chocolate is a good antioxidant. The real problem is keeping it moderate. Are you taking note Nuttygran I did say moderate.

A few years ago when I was suffering from depression, my thyroid was tested & it’s OK but I have a naturally low temperature. Plus my extremities are usually cold. However I am also weak willed when it comes to the wrong kind of food. Silly I know. I’m lucky that my BP, Cholesterol & blood sugar are normal.
Many thanks.

Well, lost 3.4lbs this week, if only I can keep it up & not binge. Had a look at the Zoe Harcombe site again & wondered about that. I have read that her diet helps to stop binging…

How is everyone else getting on?

I hope Rockrider is OK, I haven’t seen any posts for a while, has anyone heard?

Maryl darlin, try some suet dumplings when you next make a stew or some of my bread pudding - guaranteed to put on weight:

In a bowl crumble 8 slices of bread, add: 2 large eggs, 1/2Pt orange juice, 3 heaped dessert spoons of brown sugar, 3 - 4 ox dried mixed fruit, 2 Tblsp marmalade, Cinnamon, mixed spice, & allspice. Mix thoroughly. Pour into a shallow oven-proof dish and place in hot oven (180 oC) for approx 60 - 90 mins. Remove from oven when cooked and allow to cool - decorate with a sprinkling of caster sugar!!!

Has anyone tried this? It’s been recommended to me & doesn’t look too strict.

Hi Nuttygran- I would go along with this diet as it is the type of diet I loosely try to follow. I say loosely because I do eat a certain amount of carbs but I avoid refined carbs. It’s very much like the G.I. diet. It has been reported that we don’t balance the fats in our diets and consume too much omega 6 in “pufa fat” found in veg oils and spreads and not enough of the other fats. Olive oil is the best all round fat a “mono-saturate fat” and walnut oil is another. I use apple cider vinegar with olive oil for a salad dressing and I put walnut oil on toast. It has been well documented on the good effects of fish oils and omega 3. Even so I wouldn’t go overboard on fat if you don’t use a lot of energy. Unless you have a health problem I believe most things in moderation without being excessive with any particular food is ok. Basically I think this diet is a good healthy diet and if you don’t lose weight you have to be more active or decrease portions.

Thanks Rueben, I feel I could follow this diet because it’s pretty simple & relaxed. I had a look at the Harcombe diet site but it has too many ‘phases’ & some of the posters seem a bit evangelistic. I want to lose weight but I don’t want to be hidebound by a lot of rules. Thinking about it, it may not work miracles but of late, I don’t expect any…

No Nuttygran there are no miracle diets or super foods only the latest fads. The diet you are interested in does down carbs quite a bit but I would say you do need a reasonable amount of soluble carbs that you get in a variety of fruit and veg eg. apples pears bananas potatoes and wholegrain cereals. These keep the bowel healthy and take toxins out of the body. The thing is to only have small portions at any meal. Insulin levels will be kept even if the whole fruit is eaten not just drinking the juice. Eat some none starch food with bread or potato to slow done insulin release eg. potato with meat and veg is ok but chip butty is not:-( Bread with salad or protein is ok but jam on bread or toast is not:-( and I love jam on toast:cry:

Again, thank you. I’ve just had a cheese omelette followed by two Victoria plums…

Errmmm - what happened to the ‘plain’ chocolate NG darlin’ - two or three bars should work wonders for you.:lol::lol:
