Wood saws - what are the differences?

I feel so ignorant, I hardly dared post this :frowning:

Are there different kind of saws for sawing through wood?
I don’t mean logs or thick bits, just some ordinary 2 x 1 and similar?

Ooh dear, I hardly dare say this, but I shall not find out unless I ask . . why does the saw I’ve just bought only go one way?

I can pull it towards me to start off the cut, but it won’t go back the other way - pushing it away.
Never had a problem before with any other saw, so don’t you men start blaming my technique either!

Buy an axe…
…but be careful Eugene!

Oh dont Tess you will confuse the poor dear.

I’ll have to read through that Tpin, thank you.

The teeth are very different from my old saw, they are much bigger and deeper cut, but I assumed it was because my old saw was so ancient and blunt they had worn down.
I thought this one would be nice and quick to saw stuff, but it’s a nightmare and just breaks big splinters off the wood.:frowning:

As a Tree fella.

Different wood saws for different jobs

Photo will help sounds like yo have a band saw instead of handsaw or tenon saw.

Aww Mups, you need some kind gentleman to offer to pop round and help you with these DIY jobs :frowning:

There are bow wood saws as well.
Some have small teeth some have teeth at different tooth spacings. I would help but too far away

I don’t know what the flippin’ thing is called, you men are just confusing me more with all these names.
It just looks like an ordinary saw but with big teeth, that’s all I know.
I can’t use it, it’s no good at all.

I would take it back but I’ve shredded the flippin receipt.

I’ll try and take a photo tomorrow Nomkins, but me camera’s not that good for detail either.
( I shall cry if I don’t laugh).

Do you think I need putting down?

Tenon saw.

Hand saw.

Both have small teeth close together and are ideal for small timber jobs.

a little rub around the blade with candle will aid in the sawing, dont force it let the saw do the work.

That’s what you need Mups!

…with a man attachment ;)!

It’s the same shape as the second one Nom, but with big teeth.

I’ve just been out to the shed to look at it again and it has got just 7 & half teeth to an inch.
I couldn’t measure the length of the teeth in inches, so I tried millimetres instead, and the teeth are 5 mm’s long - I think. My old saw’s were only half as long as that.

Does that make any more sense?

As I said before, no matter how hard I push the darn thing, it won’t go forwards, it just breaks long splinters of wood off if I force it.

No but a piccy saves a thousand words.

Both of these cut wood.

Two man band saw.

Pad saw.

Sounds like yours would be useful on branches etc.

Ooh don’t Tess, I’ve got enough troubles as it is.

I get so cross and frustrated when something that should be simple - isn’t!
You wouldn’t have thought me a lady at all if you’d have heard me cursing this afternoon in the garden.

A few years ago I thought one of those electric Scorpion saws was the answer!
Nearly sawed me leg off, gave it away, it was safer

Please dont use this again you could do yourself some harm, i will leave the tooth sizes and type to the joiners among us, tis along time since i was art school and they will advise you better than i.

Anyhow glad to see your tackling things yourself, respect to you, and us blokes can sleep safer at night.

Fancy giving your leg away, nee wonder you keep falling over ya daft ha`peth.
