My first thought was that the odious Chris Rock deserved what looked to me to be more a loose punch than a slap. But then I heard he made the same joke at the rehearsal, with Will Smith present, with no comeback, which puts a different complexion on the matter,.

Yes that makes a difference…he could have dealt with the situation much better but maybe he objected but the joke wasn’t taken out…we will never know. I do think differently about it though knowing he was aware of the content.

yes, it’s a bit weird if he already knew the content, but if he was having a laugh the profanity should be called out unless they now allow swearing on mainstream before watershed TV

Don’t know anything about any of those involved and not really interested either but I think it was unfair to make a joke about the wife’s alopecia so he deserved a smack!

They should have had security eject him and call the police. Wouldn’t that happen to me if I went around slapping people in a public venue?
And his face would have been a picture if they’d gone off script and arrested him and charged him!

Will Smith not charged with assault . . . yet. Chris Rock declined to file charges but he has up to six months to do so. Chris Rock spoke to LAPD after the event.
I must say that is a relief, I was beside myself worry about this.
Shame, I’d love to see him nicked for it and he deserves to be, it’s an awful example to set and an immature, irresponsible way to behave
But Rock not filing charges makes me even more convinced it was a set up

The Oscars ceremony was so “woke” about just about everything else but when it comes to real, physical violence, right in front of them, they take no action and don’t even disapprove much.
Just because it’s loveable black guy Will Smith?
What if it had been a white bloke slapping a black one? Would they have been as supportive?

It was a stupid thing for Will Smith to do. If he is unable to go along with the superficiality and fakery of the world he inhabits, he shouldn’t really be there. But then he wouldn’t be rich and famous.
Maybe it was set up, but I can’t think why he would have gone along with a scheme that would leave him looking like an idiot.
