What you would not Want To Hear just before going under for Surgery?

I think terror is a more appropriate word than trepidation, given that I knew the surgery involved taking the eye out for the procedure. Due to the detachment I could see nothing out of the eye being operated on and my other eye was covered so it was only about hearing and feeling. Pain free due to the local anesthetic, apart from the small prick of the injection. Just deeply unnerving - especially when the surgeon was ensuring the socket was cleaned out before re-inserting my eye. Yucko. Still gives me the wobblies when I think about it.

A friend, who is a mechanic, got a sliver of metal in his eye, in fact behind his eye. Hurt like mad, so off he went to the Moorfield Eye Hospital. The doctor, using local anesthetic, popped out the eye to remove the bit of metal. But all the time my friend was awake and could see what was going on. As he said, I could see the ceiling and my feet at the same time.

Classic lines from the original Mash film.

"Is this an officer or an enlisted man?
“Enlisted sir”
“Okay, make the stiches nice and big then.”
