It was written in 1991 … I wasn’t on forums in those days and didn’t care much about anonymity.
I picked this up at Tolpuddle this year.
Empire and Revolution: A Socialist History of the First World War by Dave Sherry
Quite fascinating how many mutinies there were during this War that were not generally reported and not widely known about now.
Have you read the follow up books Julie? They are all excellent. I’ve just ordered the last one in the series. I’ve been meaning to do it for ages but just got round to it.
Yes read them all years ago nearly finished the first and have just this afternoon downloaded the second the valley of horses so it’s ready for me next.
Me too Julie, long ago now. I also saw the film “Clan of the Cave Bear” (I think that´s what it was called), but it was a very poor effort compared to the book.
Skallagrigg by William Horwood. I’ve read this a few times over the years and it’s wonderful. Moving, cruel, spiritual, uplifting and thought provoking, and if anyone knows somebody with cerebral palsy I would highly recommend it specially.
I didn’t realise they made a film
Respect where due.
I am just starting Broken and Betrayed - Jayne Senior, it’s about the child abuse in Rotherham and the many attempts by several different bodies to keep it covered up.
Should make interesting reading…
Are yu famous or summit?
We are called to rise
by Laura McBride
Based in Las Vegas - a sad story of the devastating effect of history on people’s lives.
Cider With Rosie (Laurie Lee)
Lots of stressful situations here at present and this is a lovely calming book… ( that’s my calm smile!)
The Kingdom by the Sea by Paul Theroux
He walked/bused and trained around the entire coastline of England Scotland and Ireland in the 80’s. An amazing portrayal of coastal and general social life in the 80’s before the channel was even completed. Must have felt safe then??
Was that Channel 4.
I said B4!!
I’m reading 'Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025? ’
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Suicide-Superpower-Will-America-Survive/dp/0312579977
Very worrying though thought provoking book. Not entirely in agreement with the premise or findings which is kinda reassuring.
It seems to me the more you learn about world events the more you have to consider the wider implications - the secret handshakes - the money men. Can you really get at the truth or do you end up joining the conspiracy theorists through lack of info? I reckon you end up merely wondering and silent, rendering all your reading of no-worth to anyone bar yourself as in at least you have come to a conclusion - there are other more important aspects of life to consider maybe ? At least you had a go.
I’ve started “Lord Foul’s Bane” again after a couple of decades because I’ve read all my library books and the library is shut today!
It’s the first of the “Chronicles of Thomas Covenant” by Stephen Donaldson. I bought nearly the whole set at The Book Barn for a pound each!
Weird how it seems like yesterday when you reread some books after several years.
Have just started Stephen Kings “Firestarter”…just catching up on his older stories that ive missed…
From the author of THE SHINING, CARRIE and THE DEAD ZONE, this is Stephen King’s most mesmerizing and menacing novel yet…It is the story of a sinister government agency, a fateful drug experiment, and a pigtailed girl named Charlie, who has an unimaginably terrifying gift.
Magic books indeed.
