What book are you reading now?

Its sad to see that people miss the main message of the Bible which is … Good News. Optimism. Hope. Love. Total self reliance is the wrong option. We need God whether we like it or not.

Oh im also reading The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. Its a must read imo. And its surpisingly practical. Learning to make wise decisions. So important. Just crucial.

I’ve just finished the newest Angela Marson book.

Clare Mackintosh, After The End.

Just finished The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. I haven’t seen the movie and I’m not sure I want to. The book was riveting and hard to put down. So many twists.

I enjoyed it too and haven’t seen the film. I have been told that the film is nowhere near as good as the book so I shan’t bother with it. I agree with you that the book was riveting I couldn’t put it down either. So many excellent books don’t translate into good films.

Reading murder in Belgravia by Lyn Brittney. Little slow and ponderous but interesting facts about what was available as medicines prior and during WW1 cocaine in baby products. Heroin given to babies to wean them off the cocaine as it was considered safer for them ! Ladies in middle-classes taking heroin. Cocaine and opiates like they were sweeties !!

I was really enjoying watching the Vera series then I read one of Anne Cleeves books. I got so much more out of the book. I then watched one and found it moved way too fast. Books will describe what the character is thinking and feeling and oftentimes little subtext to get a fuller picture. Then we add our own imagination.

I picked up this book in a charity shop in very good condition for 50p
@The girl with the dragon tattoo@, has anyone read this book and is it any good ?.. thanks for your replies.

It is the first in a series of three - all three are absolutely impossible to put down. The author died some years ago , there is a forth book finished off by someone else after his death.

The Swedish made three excellent films of the books too. There is a yank one too but nowhere near as good…

Thanks Bruce for all the info, will get stuck in on your recommendation

Malazan fans…or other fantasy

I’ve been reading The Book of Malazan Series …on book 8 now “The Reaper’s Gale” It’s sometimes (I’ll admit even more than that) to always know what’s going on , but I get enough glimpses and some really good crafty writing which I do understand…including poetry…and because it keeps shifting…I never get bored…really heavy stuff as far as magical worlds/warrens, but not like teenagey kind of stuff…I like Erikson…

Also reading a travel trues story called Endurance

And a book called The Riddlemaster…but Malazan I’m most addicted to.

Any Malazan fans out there?

Maybe a bit old hat but lve just finished a great book by Kenneth
Roberts about the american war of independance and the role
of its emergent navy in the struggle from an american point of
view! It has enough romance for me,but may not be enough for
modern tastes?
A really good read, especially as l last read it 70yrs ago, it has
improved with age!
The title is THE LIVELY LADY!!

Regards Dokeyman!

I’m reading a Johnny Francome. I love books about horse racing thrillers.

A life, in his own words, Freddie Mercury

The Good Liar by Nicholas Searle .
It’s Helen Mirren’s latest film ,on release tomorrow .

Chances Are ~ Richard Russo

I just watched Nobody’s Fool with Paul Newman in it, and thought to take a chance with Russo’s new book.

Just started a rather old book about Alan Bond, his bankrupcy, gaoling and squirrelling away of most of his wealth. It’s called Going for Broke by Paul Barry.

Easy to read and fascinating wealth can be used to delay the legal system by abusing the court system (saved him $32 million he “gave” to his family).

Hello Phamph,

You are the only post I saw that listed Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

I made a mistake …said Reaper’s Gale was the 8th book …it’s the 7th.

Is this series cool or what?!

I’m on book 8 Toll of the Hounds ……Reaper’s gale was long but good. I won’t spoil anything.

What’s your favorite book in the series and why? Mine is Deadhouse Gates…I just liked the desert jouney and the Silanda boat and Bridgeburners and Quick Ben and Kalam….Fiddler…Heborok……good story. ……I liked The Bonehunters as a second place…Ganoes Paran…

I have yet to see a fantasy series quite like this ……Checking out The Prince of Nothing…The Darkness that Comes Before…by Scott Bakker.

I’ve checked out 1st law series, and the Black co. but still it isn’t Malazan. Your thoughts?
