What Are Your Musical Abilities?

Another topic on the forum prompted me to kick this discussion off. I know for a fact that we have some seriously musical members on this forum, alas I’m not one of them!

A while back now I thought I’d treat myself to a handsome new dark blue Washburn bass guitar and hefty second hand amp in order to celebrate my mid life crisis…

After all, there were only four strings, I could use the tabs system, how difficult could it be? Oh dear! :open_mouth:
I’m ready to rise to a challenge but sometimes in life you just have to accept that some things are best left to others and move on to another activity.

So who’s got what it takes on OFC, maybe start a band?
Just kindly plonk me on the guest list :+1::wink:

Abilities? know what they were, not sure what they are nowadays.

I used to play guitar but haven’t played for thirty odd years…however, at work I recently came into possession of one of the residents acoustic guitar, actually, it’s a Spanish guitar, not brilliant or suited to me, but I’m managing, ( I’m fortunate I can play a bit in my basement during my lunch break) it surprised me that I could remember some of the chords, muscle memory I suppose, however the internet is brilliant and I’m finding that I can play a few songs, I might take it up when I’m retired next year, I still have my old acoustics in the attic, but I imagine they won’t be playable now…

I started learning to play the piano when I was nearly 50 years old ! I’ve never had lessons, it just suddenly became a hobby for my late husband and I, he already played the guitar. We bought a piano for our silver wedding anniversary five years ago, after we had already been practicing on keyboards for some time. We have all sorts of instruments in our house, luckily my son plays the guitar and piano, the only one I put my hands on is the piano.

I had never played a musical instrument before in my life, except for my colorful little organ when I was a little’un. I’ve always liked singing, I wouldn’t call it an ability but I enjoy singing away as I “mess around” with the chords on my piano.

Music has always played an important part in my life, always will.

Impressive @Chilliboot, great choice, you’ll have fun. :+1:

Oooh Rose!

I’m afraid I no longer have the guitar, I chickened out and got rid of it some years back. It really wasn’t going anywhere I’m afraid. On one occasion while tuning it I realised I had it strapped on upside down…says it all!

Seventy years ago I was quite good on the double bass. Actually it was a tea chest, broom handle and a length of string. My mate played the washboard and another buddy could play two spoons quite well. Lonnie Donegan was our hero.

I played the Clarinet and Tenor Sax as a teenager. Not very well though and only copying the popular numbers of the day. Never got good at improvising. My Father got a Clarinet so we could play duets together from set pieces. Not up to professional standards but it was great fun. He also played the Banjo Mandolin and violin and we would accompany each other playing set modern pieces of the '60s.

I later gave up the wind instruments and got a 6 string guitar. It had ‘f’ holes rather than a round hole and I wish I’d kept it. I ended up with an Epiphone folk-style guitar, which I still have 50 or more years later.

The piece that people always liked me to play was the chord sequence to ‘House of the Rising Sun’. About a year ago, I brought the guitar of its wall hanger and tried to play it. My fingers wouldn’t fall into shape and so it went back to its place on the wall. It will be there until I die and then our eldest Grandson inherits it.

Being a musician requires a balance of emotion and dexterity, in recent years (guitar wise) there seems to have been a competition for speed and accuracy, emotion just fell by the wayside Imo.
