What are you having for lunch/dinner? (Part 1)

Lamb steaks are in the slow cooker along with potatoes and a mixture of veg. We are going out for the day soon, so our evening meal will just need dishing out when we get home.

It’s one of my favourite cooking aids.

Sounds tasty Mall. I rarely use my slow cooker but they do make the meat fall off the bone.
Bit of shopping to do, so will pick up fish and chips on the way home.

We had a roast dinner today with Lamb, Roast Potatoes, Parsnips, Peas & Swede.

What is Swede? Would I know it by another name on my side of the pond?

I just ate a slice of pecan pie for lunch. Bad for me because it has lots of things I’m supposed to be avoiding. Too tired to give a sh*t  I did try to make up for it by having a couple of healthy, crunchy carrots and an apple too.

swede is like a orange turnip , here we mash carrot and swede together with butter and black pepper

Ah, thanks. Don’t think we have them here.

here is one http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/knowhow/glossary/swede/image.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/knowhow/glossary/swede/&usg=__9_tKukH1LtsPU4m-3nTpeyMUY-E=&h=310&w=440&sz=41&hl=en&start=4&zoom=1&tbnid=fXP0cmHOwoErTM:&tbnh=89&tbnw=127&ei=vp5IUd_JF6HU0QWChIGQCQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dswede%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&sa=X&ved=0CDAQrQMwAw

I cant find them here in france either
In America called rutabaga.

Baggy darlin’ - try adding parsnip, celeriac and sweet potato to it too, makes a delightful mash, just perfect to accompany Haggis (as in Haggis 'neeps and tatties).

Just had Roast Chicken, Jacket Potato and Sweet Corn, very nice too.

Hmmm. I’ve always called those turnips. Will have to check next time and see what the difference is. Thanks for the link.

I would be tempted to simply empty the roasting dish into a sieve in order to drain all the juices, and simply thicken, maybe with some Worcestershire sauce lemon juice and just a little brown sugar and a dollop of tommyK which can improve just about everything and is apparently the secret weapon of many a top chef. Just add small amounts of each, tasting in between before reaching a flavour that suits.

For my birthday my son bought me a new mincer as we somehow lost the old one in a house move. Soo, I had all the bits and pieces and left overs from the slow roasted lamb shoulder, and had kept all the pan juices from that, soo, minced the lamb along with some carrots, added all the pan juices, a good dollop of tommyk; then boiled some maris pipers and just loosed up the mix with some of the potato water, with a touch of good old fashioned gravy browning, put the mix into a square oven proof dish and after mashing well with loads of butter, covered with the pots, forked the top and it is now in the oven crisping up as we speak. Cannot beat a good old fashioned shepherds pie.

Des, your shepherds pie sounds wonderful.

My daughter cooked salmon tonight with stir-fried mixed greens including bok choy as a side dish. Nice, healthy dinner after I made such a poor choice for lunch - pecan pie and a coffee. Nobody around to rap my knuckles though.

Well Annie, they have all told you now what a Swede is, and it’s very nice mashed with best butter and pepper. I think in the olden days they used to give them to Horses as they are very hard.

Today we are having Steak & Kidney Pudding made with suet, Mash & Peas.

Luverly Susie darlin’ - I’ll be on the next train, save a place at the table for me!!!

Here in Wales we call potatoes and swede mashed together ‘potch’ and very popular it is too. @ Annie, the pie waswonderful, especially the crispy top, will definitely do this again. Funny thing is this was almost how I used to make it in my teens.

Forgot to say that on Monday when I popped into Tesco I picked up a litre of Channel Islands milk in the reduced section, only 75p a rare treat, which last night made into a huge rice pud with a few sultanas sprinkled in. We had half last night and the rest will be cold tonight. (see full cream and then some! told you did not follow any sort of low cholesterol diet lol)

Well sorry UJ but we have eaten it all up, no seconds.

Susie xx

Curses, foiled again!!!

I know how much you like your Suet Puddings UJ, it was lovely, mmmmmm :lol:
