US president Donald Trump has doubled down on his threats to take control of Greenland, saying on social media that there is “no going back” and that “Greenland is imperative”.
During a news conference at the White House, Trump was asked how far he was willing to go to acquire Greenland and replied, “You’ll find out”.
Makes you wonder why the American Secret Service hasn’t taken him out yet? He’s basically threatening (and leading us towards) WW3!!
Something I can not work out as well. Mr Trump is leading the US down a very dark road, and no organisation seems willing to call an end to it.
One of the saddest things I have seen in my lifetime.
Let’s be honest here.
Adolf was able to do what he done because the population turned away from reality.

John Stuart Mill (1806–73) was the most influential English language philosopher of the nineteenth century.
It was him who delivered an 1867 inaugural address at the University of St. Andrews and stated:
“Let not anyone pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part and forms no opinion.
Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.
He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”
I don’t think the European leaders are spineless Azz. They are just trying to cope with a change from a rules based international diplomacy system to utter chaos. I hate to admit that in this case Boris would have been far more able to cope.
Our main aim should be to unite with Europe and reverse Brexit so that we have a strong local market and a large enough military presence to defend our turf. The EU will have to change its approach to free movement from Non European countries to make a strong union between nations possible. They will also need to stop dictating to countries about social issues which are not in the least important to the bigger strategic picture.
I agree with the second paragraph that you posted under this one - but I can’t see either of your points here. First, the default UK & Europe political approach has been conciliation, seek to find a middle ground, dialogue, etc. This is the “lets just chat” approach to a school bully - which might mean he only takes half your lunch money on the first encounter. More on the next encounter. But this is the UK / EU hope therefore for me - spineless. As both Carney and Newsom have pointed out, there are more effective approaches.
And as for Johnson. Where is there any indication that the indecisive, flim-flammy waffle merchant would have any spine in dealing with Trump?
I’m just an old skeptic Azz with long held beliefs and values that were acquired a long time ago when you could rely on people teaching and reporting the truth. There was no rolling twenty four hour news, and what news there was, was concerning your local area and community. People were too busy working and looking after their friends and families.
Not a lot of news filtered in from the outside world but was reported honestly by the local press which was family owned and run, with no agenda.
I’m probably out of order commenting on threads such as these because I speak as I find and my facts are the sum of seventy five years experience, watching the world turning into something I don’t like, and don’t really understand.
There is much we don’t know about what happens in the world and we think we do, after being bolstered up by some visual images or a journalists dramatic report, it’s only later when we get some idea after the facts have emerged and we realise that we’ve been manipulated and taken for fools.
Coughs and splutters and thinks about explaining the agenda of the Thomson family that owned (still own in fact) local papers in Scotland. Then decides its a waste of effort to explain that “back in the day” the news was manipulated at all levels from the government down to the local press. Or even mentioning the Mail’s full blown support for the efforts of one Mr Hitler in the early thirties. Hey ho, let the old guffer dream his nostalgic dreams (without re-quoting Mark Carney’s comments about nostalgia not being a strategy).
When will it finally dawn on you that the worst ever suggestion was Brexit and that all the “doomsayers” were right when they pointed that Putin & Trump loved the idea of Brexit (and not to benefit the UK)? Brexit is surely & obviously a bad idea that was badly executed to deliver a bad result on every single front. That debate is over.
And kindly park your English flag on this matter - the English took all of the UK out of the EU against the will of half the countries.
Somehow I think a more robust and immediate message needs to be sent to Trump, how I’m not sure but it really does!
Can’t imagine Starmer rising to the occasion…
Unfortunately I agree, Starmer would balk at the thought of making threats or pushing back. But actually it might be simple. Thus far Trump has only talked about taking Greenland and talked about applying tariffs to European countries if they don’t let him have Greenland. So perhaps European countries could talk about having to close US military bases in Europe. The US relies on airfields in Europe to access the middle east or africa, which it likes to bomb now and then. This would simply be talking about the consequences of any act of aggression, even tariffs, against Europe. And getting the republican party and military leaders to understand the impact of Trump’s dumb threats.
The distinctly different social, health, legal and tax structures between Canada and the US demonstrate how dumb this Trump idea is. It is simply idiotic and impossible to suggest such a take over … so it must be something else. Perhaps a distraction. It makes me think the stuff that Trump is hiding (Epstein activities, what Putin has on Trump, his corruption in office) is so bad that he needs many and mental distractions.
I don’t think the European leaders are spineless either. I agree with @AnnieS that they are coming to grips with a new world order. It is very sad that the USA has become such an unreliable friend.
Macron has led the way with his condemnation of Trump as has the President of the EU. France is a European leader for good reason, de Gaulle learned the lesson from WWII and France now has an independent nuclear arsenal and military. European strategy might need a bit of a re tweak (I think that is happening)
With NATO on its last legs the EU might be the basis of a European military alliance, Britain doesn’t want to be left on the outer.
Rename it ‘Trump-Land’ build a Pro Golf Course, ‘be the Champion’.
Of Course, there has to be Trump Glacier with Penthouses for the rich buddies and girls.
