Up The Garden Path

The last hole is being dug for a 5ft concrete slotted post, I will then make a custom panel that will slot into next doors slotted post, job done, no more impromptu blocking the dogs attempts to go on an adventure. New fencing on the left of the garden before the finishing touches are made.

A crowbar and a sledge hammer are most useful in this task.

The first post has been semi turned into a slotted, and the new concrete post is dead in line with next door post so a shortened panel will go in just nice

Quick question Spitty. Are you not a little concerned about leaf/detritus build up between your new panels and the existing fence next door? I know those timbers on the slotted post are designed to be removable, but as the metal shed is going there, it’s not clear how you’re going to achieve this feat of maintenance.

Hi Dex, the trees and foliage will be cut right back before the shed construction is commenced, but, the panels will be slide in effectively so, can be raised by a foot and any build up removed, there will be a two foot gap between the fence and shed. One small problem I have is, if you look at the wooden post by the trellis in the Mataspike,I have clearance at the bottom for the gravel board (Just about) but the post is leaning our way and obscures free passage between the slots at the top. A slab will be cut to form the narrow gravel board then the panel will be constructed in situ, to fit round the leaning post, it will be seamless from our side.

Would the neighbours object to you removing that single panel and post?

Probably not Dex but, at that point, there is a level difference a couple of feet with no retaining wall at that point so, rather than run the risk of having to make good their side I thought this. The width between the concrete posts is 750mm, the gravel board will fit as will the std bottom bracing timber, the centre brace will involve me cutting a small notch into the timber post to allow for passage, the top bracing timber will come in two parts either side of the wooden post possibly with a one screw fixing into the post through the corresponding featherboard.

Fair enough. Pity there’s no way of pulling things upright and tying to that tree of theirs.

No Dex, that post is solid, got to work round it, will get the Clinical look in the end.

Concrete products are in short supply, will try to procure two gravel boards tomorrow, if I can, will photo their installation.

Been told September by the closest supplier, the 750mm gap with the intruding wooden post I will lay three courses of block paviours this afternoon to the same height as the gravel board will be because there is a transition in fencing types here anyway, I will then look out for a couple of used gravel boards

Hi Spitty. Nothing to stop you making your own gravel boards.

Hi Dex, just touched lucky, got two new ones (surplus to requirement) and 3 8ft posts on Ebay, spotted them with two hours to go, I have a plan for the posts on the lawn phase.

first blocks in, let them go off till tomorrow.

That was a quick find on eBay (other internet markets are available, as the saying goes). All starting to come together now. When are you starting the metal chalet?

Tomorrow I have to go to the FILs and cut the new 6X6 panels in half, and probably collect the Gravel Boards etc, then I will finish that bit of block work off, then, whilst I regroup the fundage I will seal the concrete slab (not going to bother with slab plinth) and construct the shed.

The third and final course of blocks is right on the corner of the wooden post. might shave that edge to allow for a bit of movement.

That’s it, just got to form the featheredge panel around the post now.

The top soil will be imported soon, and levelled to all the perimeter hardstanding reference points, then the lawn laid completely to the fence lines, treated and left to establish, next year borders will but cut back in, to suit that plantation choice.

Hi spitty. Pity we don’t live closer. I’ve got a lawn lute which would help get the topsoil really flat and of a fine tilth. (I use this each autumn and spring to dress the lawn and fill hollows). Also got some chemicals left over which we put down prior to laying the turf.

Thanks for the offer Dex, you can probably guess what I will do, I will treat the topsoil like Screed, the left lawn is just over 2 metres wide, so, with a 2.4 metre baton, I will draw against against the path and the Block paved perimeter. The main lawn is 4.8 metres wide so I will baton down the centre of that and drawn it back in two sections.
