These Storms

Ok Yorkshire does have a microclimate though. Permanent clouds and rain right over it.

I think you are mixing us up with Manchester Annie…

I have a friend on IoW who is always out there filming storms. His wife is not impressed.

We have a story up here that if the wind was to drop in the Orkneys everybody would fall over.

hmmm wuthering heights was not set in Lancashire for a reason. The howling wind and rain has always been a part of the yorkshire microclimate.

Hi Mups!

As one who lived in a seaside resort, I can confirm that life can get so boring, in the winter months, that quite dangerous moments of excitement are needed.

People leap into the sea, to swim, in conditions which the Human body was not designed to survive, whilst others run backwards & forwards, to dodge the waves, as they come and go.

Others stand on the beaches, throughout the day, holding sticks with string on the end, to try to catch their evening meal!

Strange!

The worst storm I remember was January 31st 1953. In Aberdeenshire thousands of trees were blown down and rough seas caused widespread flooding. The Stranraer to Larne ferry Princess Victoria sank with the loss of 135 lives.

I heard a thump on one of my patio doors, and further investigation showed up a piece of wood. No damage though.

The adrenaline rush is a powerful drug Mupsy, you certainly know your are alive when its just you and the elements. Been there and done that…

I remember other years seeing pictures of people with small children too, Ted.
I think that’s completely irresponsible. Surely they’d soon regret it if one of their kids got blown into the waves?

Been to my sister this afternoon, and spent the whole time phoning round for people to look at her fence. She has a lot of front fencing down. Also online chat with her house insurers. First to get her policy number (she did it online and can’t access her policy) and to ask if they cover storm damage. Which they don’t.

This is the trouble with all this online stuff, Jazzi.
I asked my insurers for a written copy of my policy plus a booklet explaining what I am, and am not, covered for, plus excess charges.
If our computers conked out, we wouldn’t be able to access things like that otherwise, but these firms don’t seem to care, it’s all about their convenience - not ours.
Hope it all gets sorted.

Sister is not tech savvy. She can’t even remember which daughter she was with when doing the insurance, and if she registered with the ‘portal’. She doesn’t know of any password. As she admitted, this is usual behaviour for her. Either her youngest D or I deal with online stuff.

Oh, that’s difficult then Jazzi.
Maybe all the more reason to ask them to send a written policy perhaps.
Lucky she’s got you. :+1:

The wind is getting up here again, and its cold, and chucking it down with rain.
What a miserable day.

The sun is out here but it’s still very windy and cold… :worried:

Windy here in Bristol. Been raining all morning brightening up now.

I was watching Sky News for a change this morning and nearly threw our TV out of the window. The newsreader was interviewing Grant Shapps the Transport Minister. He said quite clearly that it would take at least a couple more days to sort things out because there were still trees on the lines, damaged tracks and stations, and trains and drivers not where they should be. Fine, a good, clear response from a government Minister, which makes a change. The newsreader then cuts to Paddington station where a young woman OB reporter is waiting to start her piece. First question out of newsreader’s gob, “What’s it like at Paddington Station? Are things back to normal yet?”

only 30 seconds before she was told things were still in a mess the dumb cluck!
