The Toms are in

Nowt wrong with a bit of Round The Horne - do you listen to it on Radio 7?

For those suffering tomato withdrawl, till this year’s fruit up, here’s a reminder of the tomato festival

I haven’t even got a flower opened on mine, are these indoor ones that are romping away? because my outdoor ones are just sitting there. Please say they are, otherwise I’m doomed.:frowning:

I’ve no flowers on mine either val - and I’m perfectly relaxed about it.
There are a few plants in the polytunnel (belonging to other people) with flowers but the plants themselves are pretty small - I don’t think they’re up to fruiting yet
patience, patience

Thank goodness for that, I don’t want to have to wait till Christmas before I have any ripe ones. Tomatoes that is.

How did you guess?

My outdoor toms went in this morning,or should be out?. And the ones in the greenhouse and polytunnel are just starting to flower

Mine are outdoors, started March 17th and set outside May 1st. I have flowers on two plants, and a tomato set on one. Don’t despair, I live in a much warmer climate!

“Your day will come”

Good to hear you’re all in flower  . . . I’ve become a tapper . . yeah, I tap them every day to get the pollen wafting . . . them tumbling toms are turning a pale shade of green with a hint of yellow . . . it won’t be long 'till they’re blushing red . . . . them Courgettes take up some floor space though . . I’ve gotta step over the leaves and stalks on the floor . . the spread is nearly 3 foot.

This year has been a learning experience for me again . . I grew them 30 years ago but things have changed so much in that time regarding varieties and the types of pots and such . . . the general multi compost in the green bags from B&Q is absolute rubbish . . it’s more tree bark than peat and doesn’t hold water.

I hit on a good idea with the supports . . I laced a clothes line right around the inside of the roof supported by screw hooks . . . then I used cable ties to attach the canes tops to the rope, this makes the supports very strong and rigid . . . I’ll post a pic of it soon when the toms are ripe.

Nice to know you “tap” too, Nero; I always have. I now have two fruits set, the first one is large green pea size now, second dressmaker pinhead size. The 32 C weather yesterday really encouraged them!

All this tapping?

I wonder if Fred and Ginger ever got it together in a greenhouse?

LOL, OG. Mine are outside, but I don’t trust the bees, especially with the rainy weather and the scarcity of them too.

I promise not to bore everyone by announcing every new tomato!

I always remember my Dad tapping the canes on the tomato plants to get them pollinating …

Here’s the first tumbling tom, I think I’ll have to sell some, there are 7 more plants like this.

These are the canes I mentioned, a clothes line attached to hooks screwed into the roof beams gives rigid support.

That`s a nice looking plant-and I noticed the pots on the smaller canes.

Much better than a poke in the eye

You have a good crop there, Nero, nice healthy looking plant too…

Too true OG . . that’s a tip I got from dear old Percy Thrower many years ago.

They’re looking very good, Nero!

Here’s my first (and second) fruit on Marmande:

ooerr . . . you’re taking a chance posting that photo DM . . . better not let the squirrels see it   . . I have 4 of those varieties but they’re not even in flower yet.

Looking good, Eileen … have you hired someone for nightwatch? :-D:lol:

Fortunately the vermin sleep at night, Mags, LOL! I have a large supply of those little mesh bags that boiling onions come in; tie them over the fruit when it’s ripening to foil the squirrel and the catbird. Works some of the time…
