The Grisaille Technique

I am trying a new technique ( I only heard about it today )
It’s called the Grisaille technique and means painting a monochrome underpainting .
I don’t know if it will work for me .but I like to try new things .
Here’s my sketch and the underpainting

I’ve seen this before but it always reminded me of lino cut printing. Give me a full palate of colour any day :+1:

You paint over it with colours

It’s looking promising @Muddy - I look forward to seeing the finished painting. You really know your horses, don’t you!!

I asked Marge as, since she retired she as become an artist.
She’d never heard of the term ‘Grisaille Technique’ but has done the same thing and explained that it helps to achieve the light and dark differences.
All way above my head, of course.

I think that’s very effective, Muddy. Excellent picture.
Now for the other horse!

Put a bit more wrinkles in the nose
You find our a white horse isn’t really very white .

Yes, it’s becoming a little more coloured around the nose and eyes.
Very realistic. Almost like a photograph.

Adding more detail

That looks great. Is it finished now? It certainly looks like it is.

Thank you JBR it’s nearly finished but there just a few tweaks left .
The trouble is it’s in oils and I have to wait a bit until it dries in some places others wise disasters happen !

I’ve just shown this to Marge and she is veeerrrry impressed!
She doesn’t like oils for the reasons you mention (taking ages to dry) but used acrylics and water colours in preference.
