I feel sorry for these dogs. It’s not their fault humans are so stupid and irresponsible. It’s the breeders that authorities should crack down on. I can’t see how they will enforce this ban. Many local authorities no longer have dog wardens. It seems anyone can have a dog without any checks. So many animals suffering out there. It makes me very upset when I start thinking about it, but nothing we can do.
These ghastly animals should never of been bred.
The breed is unreliable .
Only an idiot would want to own one as a pet, they aren’t pets .
This is my strongly held opinion.
There are times when I struggle to keep hold of my small 8kg cavachon when he spots a fox .
The average person would stand no chance of keeping control of a Bully if it decided to take off.
Some personally kept offensive weapons have lungs and a heartbeat!
Meanwhile any should be muzzled. Will this be the law ? What will happen to the dogs now in homes?
Why wait till December bring in the law now . Its like having a lion as a pet
Waiting gives the issue time to disappear from our memories, until the next kill and the next “pledge” from another liar.
These dogs can weigh 9 stone . How could anyone control that .
I totally agree . They are status dogs , to add status to the wrong people !
They must bring back licensing and make dog owning more difficult . Every dog should have a passport and ID . The breeders of these dogs are the root of the problem they should be stopped .
Exactly Abby, they can’t control them.
Is that really the problem? We have a St Bernard’s and she is an absolute delight.
Different breed though Besoeker…
I think it is still largely the problem with the owners. They tend to encourage aggressive behaviour. In my opinion…
The problem is that breeders are not regulated. All dog breeders should be registered & regulated (including private owners who allow their dogs to mate for breeding purposes).
The next step would be that any registered breeder cannot transfer a dog to new owners without evidence that they have checked their ability to own and look after a dog of the type they are taking on. This should include requirements for new owners to attend a training course (providing a certificate to show they have understood and passed the test), a criminal records check for any violent tendencies (assault charges, domestic violence etc), a facilities check to ensure they have suitable conditions for a dog of the type they want to adopt. A registration of any dog transferred.
Compulsory training course attendance after taking on the dog & a certificate to show the dog is trained and the owner can control the dog. The registration contingent on annual vet checks to show the dog is cared for and trained.
Such a process would greatly reduce the number of unwanted or badly treated dogs in ownership. If we had such processes in place then we would not be in a position where dogs are regularly attacking both humans and other dogs with tragic consequences for both humans and dogs.
Totally agree, Annie !
Registration of dog Breeders, it’s a good idea.
However, not for the bully as they shouldn’t be bred.
We are becoming far too complacent with dog ownership. Any dog has the capability of running wild and causing injury to humans and other dogs. How many times have I heard the term “He won’t hurt you he’s just being friendly” and the next thing it’s barring it’s teeth and adopting an attack position. Some dogs are just unpredictable and can’t be controlled, and a large heavy dog with a vice like grip with it’s jaws are the worst. You wouldn’t allow a ten year old kid to drive a vehicle would you. And I see owners who would be completely out of their depth trying to control a large and strong dog of this stature. They sometimes have more than one dog under their supervision. All dogs should be on a lead and large, strong, and unpredictable dogs should be outlawed and confiscated.
Breeding is completely out of control OGF. It makes me so upset thinking about the cruelty of breeders and total ignorance of people who have never owned a dog being able to buy a dog with a few clicks on their phone, take it away to an inadequate home, treat it cruelly because they are so ignorant and then the dog gets the blame when all that emotion comes out in public.
Christine Middlemiss said instead there will be an “amnesty”, where owners will have to register their dogs and take actions including a muzzle in public.
Mr Sunak said on Friday that the dogs were “a danger to our communities” and would be banned by the end of the year. But environment minister Mark Spencer, whose department has responsibility for adding dogs to the banned list, said it will “take a while” to ban the dogs.
“We’re going to have to go through the process of identifying the characteristics of that dog, of that type of dog, and make sure that we don’t encapsulate the wrong sort of dog in that process,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions?. And we’ll try and get that that balance right between getting rid of those nasty dogs with the horrible characteristics, but protecting people’s pets."
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “There has been a clear case for banning them for a long time. What I say to the government is good, get on with it, and the sooner we can do this the better.”
Home Secretary Suella Braverman saying she was taking urgent advice on the matter.
Hospital admissions for dog bites have gradually increased over the past 15 years
- In 2022, there were 8,819 admissions to hospital in England with dog bites, compared with 4,699 in 2007
- Ten people in England and Wales died because of dog bite injuries in 2022
Of course the “XLs” should be culled … and any other dogs bred for aggression and profit …
Besoker it’s the breed not all the owner .
I have had two Dobermans and a Rottweiler in my life .
They were wonderful dogs and I had young children at the time .
( all were rescues , they found me not I them )
The Rottweiler I had had since she was a very small puppy .
They were all great with children but still a Rottweiler is a Rottweiler .
They are completely different in temperament with other dogs and they have large jaws .
None of my children were ever bitten by any of the dogs we used to take in .
But they knew their place and we are all good with dogs .
I would not ,having had experience with pit bulls recommend them even though they can be loyal and loving . They can turn and when that instinct to kill kicks in they can’t help themselves And these XL bullies are huge bigger than many pit bulls even .comparing them with a St Bernard - a breed well known for its placid temperament is just not being realistic .
Dogs breeds are different
Take for example akitas and huskies . These are simply not house dogs they were bred to pull sleds not walk around suburbia.
There is also a fashion for Belgium Mallinois which again are brilliant dogs but they are not dogs that want to be idle in a house no matter how good the owner is .
These are super active dogs that need a purpose in life .
All dogs come from wolves and in America some people keep wolves which is ok until the wolf becomes three years old and then it becomes a wolf no matter how good an owner or training it has had . It is a wolf and will kill things .
All dogs have this inner wolf ( I despair that people are breeding wolf like dogs now ) There was a British Timber dog in my dog club it’s was huge and nervous - and it’s nervous dogs that bite . Why anyone would want such a dog I can’t imagine .
The pit bull is not a natural breed it has been bred for its ferocity and ability to kill.
Those traits are there they only need to be sparked by some incident when this happens someone dies or is seriously injured
Thank you Muddy. I accept your points.
