I was chatting to a friend on the phone and after every second, or so sentence, he said my first name! Why was it necessary?
I found it so annoying, or am l being petty? Is this something you have noticed people doing whilst talking to you?
Is he a sales person? They are trained to use your name a lot to create a bond and it boosts sales. Perhaps it’s a habit that’s stuck
Psychologically, using someone’s name is supposed to make them realise you see them as an ndividual person and get them to give you their full attention. Does he think you’re not listening to him?
On the other hand, my young cousin, a little ratbag, always says to me “to tell you the truth, Mary” which makes me very sure he doesn’t usually tell me the truth!
Imagine, if all our posts that are directed to other members, were filled with their names after every second sentence… the site would sink with the weight of them!!
Imagine, someone on a ‘pay as you go’ phone of how much more the calls cost due to unnecessary name repetition!
I also have a long time friend who uses my name several times in our emails, and Hangout chats when talking.
He is a retire school psychologist, so he must know what he is doing. My take is that by adding your name it is keeping you engaged and focused, it makes the connection more personal.
But it does get annoying, and at times distracting to me! After all, I know who I am.
I bet you do, too!
I have a pen pal & every sentence has ‘dear’ refering to me in it, probably more annoying than my name, but I guess she uses it when talking in RL though I have never actually spoken to her but I guess she does.
