yep glad I wasn’t alone. Looks like everybody is going to be busy in their gardens this week with the promise of warm weather
I hope so, we have been forecast 25º - 27º for the end of the week!
Yes thanks Eileen will do so:-)
oooh lucky you, don’t think we’ll get anything like that but as long as its dry so I can get the grass cut, I dont mind.
I cut my lawns last week, thinking that would be it, but its shooting up again, so I plan to do another cut this weekend and hopefully, that will be the last, its that time of year when I need to weed and feed
I’m so looking forward to putting lawnmower away for the winter… there’s so much grass to keep on cutting. Been pulling weeds out between paving slabs tonight which takes forever. Is there something I can sweep into the gaps to stop the weeds? cement or something?
Is it a very big area? I planted moss between the flagstones on my patio, which looked very nice and did deter weeks. But would only be practical on a small area like my City patio. I read somewhere that vinegar poured there woukd kill weeds …
yes its quite a big area, the moss sounds a good idea. I dont know about vinegar though… Every time I clear the weeds using a special tool as don’t like weed killer, I get left with gaps around the slabs so plenty of space for weeds to grow!
I was fed up with doing that too, no amount of weed killer worked so it was a hands and knees job with that tool…such a thankless task…in the end we decided to lay decking this year, its made such a difference.
i really like decking, friends of mine have it and its great, not a weed in sight. I’ve done 2 sessions on patio at front this week and it makes such a difference, I keep admiring it! Hope the postie notices!! Still got the back and side to do…
Hi Marian yes you mix sand and cement then brush it into the cracks and water it gently then it will set I think it is 4 parts sand to 1 cement .
I did mine years ago, it needs doing again in places.
Hi Meg, thanks, yes that’s what I was thinking of I just couldn’t remember how to do it. Wonder if you can buy little bags of the stuff… will have to look in the diy stores. :-)
Hi Marian yes you can buy small bags or take a couple of bin bags to the builders merchant and ask for a little bit
Great thanks Meg:-D
My back lawn measures a 100 square metres, and the patio another 40, so a big area to clear, the patio is tightly packed flags with very little space between them, but still weeds and such come through, I normally use my power washer to blast the weeds away, but an old gardener friend has advised me that the next time I do that , to get a small bag of cement and to sweep it dry into all areas of the patio, getting as much as possible between the cracks and then to let the rain do the work, and to repeat it if possible, (but when you apply at first, dont leave any on top of the flags) I will be giving that a try I think:-)
Hi Aitch, thanks and looks like that’s what I’m going to do, will probably mix a bit of sand in as well and think I may have some in garage which I inherited when I moved in.
My old friend told me to only use cement, no sand, as that allows cracks to form, pure cement dries like glass, he brushes it in and then just taps the flags with a maul, to bed the cement down as much as possible ( for the uninformed a maul is a large rubber hammer used for laying flags) a small rubber hammer will do as well but it does take longer, and is a bit back breaking.
Dry grouting for paving is explained here…
If you only have the odd weed salt and boiling water make good weedkillers
ETA sorry Aitch, not meaning to disagree with you :-). I may be wrong but think there is some technical reason why cement is best not used on its own. Perhaps Plantman the builder knows why
Meg and anyone else, I am open to any kind of critisism, I only try what is suggested, and any advice I receive is taken note of, so there is no need to make apologies to me, if I am wrong im glad when people put me right, even at 72 your not too old to learn;-)
My OH buys a small bag of readymix sand and cement and used that between the paving slabs …I’m just glad he’s on his hands and knees filling the gaps, not me!
