Been working in the jungle/garden this morning - went to the garage to fetch the hedge trimmer and found this lovely lady. She was happily spinning her web between my freezer and the garage wall.
Noble False Widow (I think)

Noble False Widow (I think)
I love how you put such a positive spin on these things! shudder I would have jumped in fright and backed off slowly I think.
I want to know how these shots are taken…I mean in terms of getting so close. How brave both of you are, but I’m sorry…these do give me the heebie jeebies! (even though they are pretty in their ugly way)
In my case it was a 18-55mm lens. and the distance from the spider was about 200mm. If my wife saw it she have been terrified!
When I first moved here in February, (its a bottom flat with lots of trees and gardens roundabout) I saw quite a few some spiders scuttling around the floors before the carpets went down. I swear I was ready for crying. Obviously they need somewhere warmer in the winter months, but thankfully I haven’t seen any since…long may that continue!
I don’t mind spiders or insects generally - except wasps!
Tabby, do be careful!
" The noble false widow spider is probably the UK’s most venomous spider. These spiders are capable of inflicting a painful bite. However, they are not usually aggressive to humans, and being bitten is rare. Bites usually result from a defensive action, for example, being accidentally squashed."
I really don’t like spiders , it’s the legs & the way they race around
Simple choice.
Spiders or Flies!
I like Spiders.
Looks like a male or maybe a young one.
I am sorry but if I find them in my sun lounge & I have several times, I cull them, being allergic to bites & stings of most species that are poisonous, even if mildly toxic, I won’t take a chance. I don’t harm native species, they get shown the door.
The biggest part of a house spiders diet is spiders .
See! This is why we are instinctively wary of them
How do you do that, Pixie?
I used my little Canon Ixus digital camera - leaned over the freezer - pointed and pressed! Didn’t want to go close enough to cast a shadow on her and frighten her away.
Oh yes Tabby, can’t be scaring the spider now can we??! never mind that they scare us to death, but woe betide you cast a wee shadow over them!
I was, Mups, believe me. Was bitten by a spider - my fault not hers - a few years ago and felt unwell for days. These NFWs are new arrivals to the UK and they say their bite is a bit like a wasp sting - definitely not nice! I just leaned over the freezer - close enough to photograph but not enough to frighten her. Spiders are quite shy creatures and will not attack unless threatened. Shame her web didn’t show up so well - it was so intricate.
I think it was a female - where is Gee when we need him?. Very pretty anyway - I love Spiders. They are so fascinating. Watched her spinning for about 15mins.
Besoeker are all the spiders in your garden so handsome?
I will admit that I do love their webs in the autumn, when the frost makes them sparkle in the sunshine. That is very beautiful,
