Officers warned her she could be committing a criminal offence because the flag could be seen from outside.
The mum of two, a former warehouse worker, agreed to remove it from public view at her Swindon home after being given “strong words of advice.”
One local resident said: “You couldn’t miss the flag. It’s vile and this is such a nice area which makes it even more shocking. We’re all disgusted.
“That symbol means nothing but hate and evil. Why would anyone want to have it hanging on display for everyone to see through the window?”
The flag could be seen from outside at night hanging on a wall in the lit-up front upstairs room of Newport’s £230,000 end-of-terrace house on a newly built estate.
The two-bedroom home in a quiet square also has a Christmas sign outside saying “Santa Stop Here”.
I’m curious what the legal position in the UK is? Is it only illegal if it’s on display to the public and, consequently, not if shown inside rooms or houses?
Yes I think that is the case, Dachs…it causes offence if its seen by the public, but if its out of sight, then I suppose nobody knows really, so they can’t complain about it. The contrast between the flag and the Santa sign though…it makes you wonder at the mindset of some folk
You could put one up anywhere in your house in the UK providing it cannot be seen by any member of the public viewing from the outside. The 1986 public order act saw to that.
I don’t want to be nitpicky but isn’t, say, the participants of a larger party also “the public” that sees it if someone turns up with it although it’s shown inside?
Yes, I suppose if someone turns up at your door selling something, and the flag is right at your door so it can be seen from outside, it could be deemed offensive too, even though its technically inside your house. Also, I guess if someone turns up at a meeting with one, then it could be offensive too. Is this what you mean Dachs?
Guess it’s about intentions @Judd. For all we know, they might have out it up to prick people’s consciences for some reason, in which case it is the complete opposite of a racist statement.
