Self-defence for the older person

Yes, that’s why she’s an ex girlfriend. :-p

I find it absolutely ridiculous that the powers-that-be have still not realised that this sort of thing is why we have so much crime in this country.

The criminal element know all the tricks and are laughing at the courts and the ‘human rights’ nonsense.

Martial Arts do train the brain - they are fantastic.
After about 4 years of training in any martial art - You will know what to do in a one on one situation with the best form of defense always being to get the hell away if you can.

Confidence and mentally being a step ahead of some younger bully does change the way you approach things in life.

I would recommend any martial art that teaches control of “chi power”. It takes more than a couple of years to learn but the results are a changed outlook on life.

Absolutely…my friend’s son was stabbed through the heart because some nutcase wanted a cigarette.

Mark had his hand’s in his pockets at the time…totally helpless to fend off his attacker.

Mark was 18 at the time and a former European Kick boxing champion.

All this talk of self-defence reminds me of:

And I assume that his murderer received a metaphorical slap on the wrist.

8 years for manslaughter.

He was killed on Castle st in Edgeley, 95’.

Thats terrible Tpin. I hope they caught the nutcase.

4 years in jail for knifing someone to death.

A bit of a joke really, although I can’t see the funny side.

I just try to avoid places and times these days.

It sometimes enters my mind that we might be heading back a few centuries to the days before we had Police and when, at dusk, those who lived in substantial dwellings, closed the shutters and locked themselves in until the light of day

That reminds me of the film “I am legend”.

Some old geezers are more than likely to have actually started the fight.

Another alternative would be to pay the Mafia protection money.

It shouldn’t come to much more than our council taxes!

Got them up here Rachel, gated community’s, just lack a moat but they do have private security driving round at night to keep s plebs at bay.

Newcastle did have a Moat up until quite recently.

I would just lie back and let her have her wicked way with me

Self defence classes are OK in their way, but too many of the moves are stylized, as if every attacker makes the same move, and the slo-mo responses are just rendered laughable in a real situation.

Being a big chap, and a brown belt in Shotokan, I was often used as the “attacker” while women used me for practising self-defence moves. I really felt the classes were a waste of time with all the slo-mo, pulled-punch counter-attacks, and eventually persuaded the instructors to go for a more realistic kind of self defence. No way would a petite older lady be able to deflect a punch of mine just because she wafted her arm around while supposedly blocking me!!

So, I let them use the old “deflect my incoming punch and counter-punch to my solar plexus” move and it was quite an education for them. Their block just bounced off and their punches were too feeble and badly done to inconvenience me. Why? Because they’d never punched anyone for real and never practised punches without wearing padded gloves! Their wrists were weak, they had inadequate strength, and they only practised on people who played along with their pretend fighting.

We eventually went to a more realistic self defence class where we taught the women to basically fight dirty and fight smart. Thumbnail jabbed deep into an eye, amongst other stuff - things that were fast, unexpected and where strength wasn’t the main consideration. The best advice we gave them was to carry a small can of Deep Heat in their bags or coat pocket, because a face-full of that would stop anyone. Plus, unlike Mace (which is illegal here) it is readily available and not an unreasonable thing to carry around. Easy to identify an attacker from the smell of it, too!

Very sensible. I believe that pepper and hairspray are legal to carry too.

Well I am a petite, elderly lady, and that makes sense to me Tachyon.
