Seeing the International Space Station

Sky here has been too overcast this week - rain rain and more rain

When it is clear, having no light pollution means we get brilliant night skies and I’ve been fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights on more then one occasion. Last time was in January

Well that Trumps the Space Station  I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights and could probably see them in Northumberland if I could get my arse out of bed at 3am

I still get a thrill seeing the space station and I love pointing it out to others ( handy when it’s coming over at pub time )

The northern lights I’ve seen on my way home from work once, that was January. Most times I’ve seen them before going to bed. It helps that all my windows are velux so on a clear night I can just look out. Think the best display I caught was for three nights one summer around 1am Even woke DH to see them

Thank you, DWebb, will remember to go and look.:-D:-D

I would love to see the Northern lights (It’s on my bucket list). I was first inspired by the song ‘Northern Lights’ by Renaissance.

Flying back from Norway once, on take off, we were told if we looked out to the left, we would see them. We were on the right.

Me too dongles, can I come with you?

Best I can do at the mo, my friend sent me this picture when she lived right up on the west coast of Scotland.

Wow! That is amazing. Yes you can come with me Mups.

OK, now don’t you forget and go without me will you.

It is a smashing picture isn’t it.
She lived a long way up, about 80 miles up above Inverness but nearer the coast. A place called Laide.

What a lovely picture of the Northern Lights, Mups.

Something I would like to see too, but doubt I ever will :frowning:

I’ll be watching out again tonight for my third sighting of the ISS

I was lucky enough to see a really spectacular show of the northern Lights when I was about 6yrs old and travelling home to Ireland - on the boat from Liverpool in the care of a stewardess. She came to my cabin to wake me up around midnight and took me up on deck to watch. It was amazing. I will never forget the display or the kindness of that stewardess.

:023:

Just been out into the garden - too much low cloud to see anything!

A perfect night for viewing the ISS here in the SW, a clear sky, moon bright and the stars were twinkling. I was in the back garden at 9.55pm waiting and hoping I would be fortunate enough to see it for a third time.

Then, on time the ISS appeared, speeding its way across the clear sky. As it passed over our rooftop I dashed to the front door and watched as it continued on its journey until it was out of sight.

Amazing, once again, thanks DWebb for this thread!

I tried but couldn’t see it. Will be trying the 11:35.

Make sure you are looking towards the west, it appears suddenly

What sort of angle was it from the Earth? If it is near the horizon, I will not be able to see it.

I needed to tilt my head back to see it so nowhere near the horizon…

Great thanks.

My pleasure

LD I think you are in the South East? or down South anyway, so for you

Face South, and it will pass across the sky from West to East, a steady white light, as for the angle it will be high in the South, the sighting coming up is at an angle of 80 degrees in the South, that is were 0 degs is the horizon and 90 degrees is directly overhead, so it is going to be crossing almost overhead where you are…

as for where I am …cloudy
