I don’t read statistics, I just get upset when I hear of any young person that has disappeared or been stabbed…whether they are ,male or female!
There have been too many in recent years!
You seem to have a very old testament view of animals - the idea that man is a superior being. I remember having a discussion about the differences between humans and animals years ago with a Coptic. People’s differing views on this are interesting.
I didn’t say discriminating betweenraces. I said different groups.
I was asking whether you would say that a child was not taking a risk walking alone on an A road by clapham common at 9pm during lockdown. My point was that it’s a risky business for anyone to be walking around such an area at night at such a time. That area has the highest crime rates in the borough. (see my earlier post/link)
Good point, Foxy.
I took that as a given when you said “…The real problem is that these attacks are getting more frequent!..” when in fact they have become less frequent. The media is, as usual, heightening panic to sell newspapers and people need to look at the situation calmly. It’s a terrible thing that has happened, but sadly it happens year in, year out, with deaths of men in public significantly greater than that of women. All deaths are a tragedy, but panicking serves no purpose.
I rely on my own judgement on how many I hear on the news. My comment was not just about attacks on women, I feel that any life taken is a tragedy… so my comment related to all who were killed by violence!
Sorry if my comment wasn’t clear to you, but I am just getting fed up of hearing about another young death. If the numbers have gone down, I suspect we have Covid lock down to thank , not a change in violent attitude!
I don’t panic, but I do think we need to change attitudes when killing people is becoming such a regular news story!
There will always be those with the argument that an innocent person could be put to death as well as those who don’t support “ an eye for an eye” ?
Everyday habits could compromise safety when out and about.
Little things to stay safe that can easily be overlooked.
Being on your mobile is distracting but having emergency number preset a good idea.
Choosing a suitable parking spot well lit and close by where you can clearly see anything suspicious and return to wherever you left.
If on public Transport or getting a taxi letting somebody know when to expect you and details.
Rachel Nickell, out with her son walking their dog on Wimbledon Common in daylight could never have imagined they were in any danger. Within walking distance of home.
Clashes between police and mourners at Sarah Everard cancelled vigil
[I]"Clashes have broken out between police and mourners at a vigil for Sarah Everard.
Footage posted on social media shows police and mourners jostling near the Clapham Common bandstand, where the Reclaim the Night vigil was due to be held before it was cancelled due to Covid-19 safety concerns."

Rachel Nickell was murdered walking with her small child in the middle of the day .Jill Dando was murdered on her own doorstep .
Looking at the pictures on SkyNews online just now of today’s events at the Bandstand. I’ve never been on Clapham Common and have to reiterate how could anyone think it was safe to cross alone in darkness?
Where had she actually come from ?
Surely the friend she’d been visiting would have said “ don’t go that way ? “
It’s not a bit of good all those women blaming police for not making streets safe !
I agree. It’s not that there are more violent deaths these days, it’s just that the media are reporting them more.
In a country with a population of 68 million souls, the odds of getting murdered is very low indeed. You have more chance of winning the lottery or being struck by lightning. The MSM are making people paranoid…
They are indeed. Each article that incites panic about the poor woman’s murder eggs on the next place to do an article about it to be even more sensationalist. It gets to the point where people can’t think straight.
I see in the news that women at the vigil are now clashing with police.
Both resulted in innocent men being charged, which is biggest negative against death penalty.
With the media snapping like vultures taking photos of any remotely confrontational incident. Totally irresponsible.
I agree
Apparently, the vigil has been hijacked by Antifa and BLM hence the violence. Whatever, it’s a bloody disgrace that Susan Everard’s memory has been defiled in this way. God knows what her family and friends think.
Rachel Nickell was stabbed in a secluded wooded spot on Wimbledon Common while walking her dog in the morning. Again that was a risk to take. I have never been hiking on my own. If I walk the dog alone I am careful not to go somewhere secluded because it is dangerous to go into such places without other people. People do these things but they are at risk of nutters taking the opportunity. It’s been drilled into kids for years.
I know this very well because I was once sexually attacked when I was 23 walking in a country park beside a river. Luckily the attacker was startled by some people and ran off into the bushes. He didn’t manage to get very far but he got me on the ground pinned down trying to grope me and he was incredibly strong. I bit his finger as that was pretty much all I could do. I was very fortunate but it made me very aware of what can happen if you go for a walk alone in a quiet spot.
As far as Jill Dando goes that’s not a good example because she was a celebrity.
