Post your daily exercise routine

8 miles a day seems a bit too much for me at the moment. I have a 4 mile route worked out and currently running that distance daily, with reps now and then. Will attempt a longer run maybe 1x or 2x a week. Will be timing myself over 3 miles soon.

This getting old stuff seems to be getting out of hand, my old man would have said “let it go”. a long time ago:-), but then again, did he collapse too early, commensurate with the era?

Probably should wear a helmet but I don’t.

I think it’s good to do a couple of forms of exercise if you can. The sets of muscles used for each sort are definitely different.

A combination of swimming and cycling should give lots of different muscles a work-out.

Good idea Mart, swimming is a good all round exercise on it’s own but I wouldn’t recommend wearing a helmet though, you would probably sink head first. Unless they make a buoyant one!

Should have been a rest day today but with the sun streaming through the window at 6:30 am I couldn’t resist going for a walk, with a bit of jogging thrown in after I had eaten my apple. I took the lane out into the country and did a lap of the wood and was surprised to see a deer leg it over two fields when I disturbed him, or her.
Nice to saunter for a change.

I’ve been looking at the photos of your routes OGF (not hair roots) :). A very pleasant area to be. It is nice to go slower sometimes. More time to appreciate the countryside if fast times aren’t the primary goal.

I’d have to wear a buoyant helmet if I went swimming. Then the life-savers would be able to see the top of my head if nothing else.

Cycled 10 miles today. Nothing different in the route, just the usual one. I know how long it is (slightly less than 10 miles to be accurate) and how long I’ll be away from the house.

A nice day for the ride. The next one should be on Thursday, if it doesn’t rain. My brother and I are fair-weather cyclists.

I said the next ride might be Thursday …and so it was. Another ten mile ride. More tomorrow (I think).

Nice going Mart, I hope you managed to avoid the rain showers.
Tuesday’s run was under a clear blue sky, it started off a bit wobbly but once I got warmed up it turned out better than expected with a strong finish and a not too shabby time. I was sweating quite heavily though and made my mind up to have a steady one on Thursday.

With another fine sunny morning Thursday was a nice steady amble around deserted country roads. For the first four miles I felt comfortable but as I reached half way I could feel some heavyness creeping into my quads and running was becoming laboured. I managed to make it home intact but I was surprised that even though I had adopted a very relaxed pace I had come out of it pretty bad.

Over sixty percent humidity could be half of the story, but recovery seems to be taking longer these days.

After checking the weather for tomorrow it looks like the planned walk will go ahead.

Had a few days off from running though for 4 days previous I had carried out some decent paced runs over 4-5 miles. Decided to try 10 miles last night to make up for the torpor of the last few days. Very pleasantly suprised as I didn’t miss a beat and found it quite easy. Was following a runner at around 7 miles and he looked to be running at a decent pace but I realized I was reeling him in so I was running that much faster  . Overtook him and then started reeling in another runner further ahead. If they were looking tasty then I must have been looking even tastier  . After all it is all about looks on these runs  .

No rain was forecast by the BBC and Met Office web sites for our area, so we decided to set off on a ride. The forecast was wrong. Being fair-weather cyclists (as mentioned), we called off our ride about halfway round due to the rain that wasn’t forecast.

The result was a 9 mile ride that involved no uphill struggles. However, we did manage lunch in the park, eaten under the trees (because it was raining). From there to the pub where we downed a couple of pints of Abbot Ale. The food and beer will have more than replaced any calories expended by our ride.

Oh well …win some lose some I suppose.

Oh FGS !!!

‘Style’ would have a better word to use.

Same thing happened to me Mart. I was all ready to set off at 9:00am, the BBC Weather had not forecast rain until 17:00 hours, I would surely be back by then, but what’s this? It got so dark I had to put the light on to eat my breakfast, rain lashed against the window and filled the road outside with torrents of water. I began thinking about all the jobs I could do instead of walking, and I was engulfed by disappointment.

By 9:30am the rain had stopped, the water soaked away, and the sun shone brightly through the window. I scooped up my rucksack and made my escape. I managed to dodge most of the swollen puddles that occupied the lane, but I couldn’t dodge the thin winding path down the side of a field, and long grass that had leaned over the path heavy with water filled my socks with moisture and seeds, very uncomfortable.

Some roads and some muddy lanes followed, but the sun remained warm on my back for most of the walk. With most of the walk complete it was time to consider lunch, fortunately the village I strode through contained a Greggs (and with seating) this would be my watering hole (Tea and Ham Salad) Can’t stand tea in a paper cup but beggars can’t be choosers.

With only a couple of miles remaining I made good time after my short rest, I even made better time when on the last mile heavy clouds crowded out the sun and spots of rain peppered my face so I jogged the last bit. Just closed the door and the heavens opened. The BBC weatherman never saw that coming either…

I’ve never seen so many chickens, it’s rare to have so many ladies showing an interest in me… a Foxes paradise…

Interesting post Mark, chasing down runners while out training used to be one of my favourite pass times, these days however it’s only walkers who fall victim to my prowess…But putting on the style while running through populated areas is still recommended, and checking your reflection in shop windows as you run past to make sure you’ve got it right is preferable…

I do what I do, in the knowledge that few others do what I do, don’t need stats for that.

I don’t present a stylish figure when out on the bike. ‘Old bloke’ might more describe the look. The bike is nearly always dirty (because of the off-road riding). It has a saddlebag, mudguards and a rear-view mirror.

No sporty attire. Tracksuit bottoms with reflecting strips clipped around the ankles and anything on my top that is thought suitable for the temperature of the day. A peaked cap and sunglasses are often worn.

However, I have surprised a good number of other cyclists by the fitness level that belies the appearance. I suppose that level of energy will fade as I progress through my seventies but right now, I’m still keeping up with the children and grandchildren …just not looking stylish though.

It all depends how serious you take them Spitty, I’ve always found them a useful tool to monitor fitness (or the lack of it) In my competitive days of marathon running they came in very useful for demonstrating what worked and what didn’t, less so these days. But ever since my first run in 1978 I logged down a time, a distance and a comment, I have now got a comprehensive record of ever run I’ve ever done. Perfect for cold winter nights and just like photographs bring back some very happy times.

I will always continue to collect these scraps of information in the same way a stamp collector paws over his collection of stamps. But I realise they are only of interest to me so I will refrain from posting them in the future. My reports are probably largely overlooked by many, but this is a forum and I enjoy sharing them with the ‘odd’ fitness enthusiast like Mark, Mart and Rachel, and enjoy reading their pusuits.

Sorry if I indicated that Mark, Mart and Rachel were ‘odd’ it was unintentional.

That’s OK OGF. It’s only confirming what my family have been saying for years.

STYLE ? ppppfffft !!!

I am tempted to post a pic of ‘style’

pmsl

I have also been referred to as ‘odd’ ‘different’ ‘quirky’ or, lately, ‘CRAZY’ .

I dispute this, because I feel quite NORMAL thank you

Mind you, I quite enjoy reading this thread … hmmmmmmm

Today I walked 3.52 miles at an average speed of 3.5 MPH. This was to town and back. The speed on the way there was 3.7 MPH and on the way back it was 3.3 MPH. I suppose that figures.

There was also the wandering round done whilst actually in the town but that’s not included in the above.

Just set a personal worst for this year.
I took a tumble in the first quarter mile as I went to step off the kerb, next thing I remember was rolling on the road in front of a startled Land Rover Discovery driver.
I immediately leapt to my feet as the driver was just climbing out of his vehicle. He asked if I needed help, but I assured him I was okay and jogged on. After completing a quick check I was surprised to find no injuries, not even a grazed knee.
Feeling a little shook up I carried on, everything seemed to be working, so I led out into the country at a careful pace. The steady pace continued for the rest of the eight mile course, I had no desire to speed up and it turned out to be a very enjoyable run. Better watch out in the future though, was it just lack of concentration? Or something more sinister?
