Post your daily exercise routine

Just as an addition to my new plans and goals, I hope you don’t mind but I’m posting a couple of photos I’ve taken today so I can use them as a kind of “before” starting point for my own progress goals. These are entirely as I am without any prior gym training, i.e. I’m not ‘pumped up’ where I’m much more muscled, lol.
It’s the belly fat I need to shift, but I’m also aiming to work on gaining a little more size as well especially in my shoulder which are quite pathetic at the moment. All this heavier work should hopefully give me a head start on the inevitable muscle wastage which may soon come with age!

School run today, back at the gym tomorrow

Well that’s one way to commit Floydy!. I would tell you that your physique is excellent for your age, but understand your determination. What a very, very nice photo of you and your wife! I have sent many good thoughts her way and it’s nice to “see” her. As much as I am enjoying the photos, faaaaat chance of me posting a bikini photo after all of this fine Polynesian dining and the accompanying umbrella drinks:lol: However, you and I are like-minded in that I will be hitting the ground running - literally! My running schedule is a bit off, but I did put in four miles today and feel accomplished about that. With my team ascending to the big telescopes and hiking around the summits, aside from the 20 something set, I am the only one not feeling the effects of altitude. I never thought that conditioning would pay off up here, but it definitely does.

Rhian, I am fairly sure you already had the best legs on the forum :-D, but that’s great news about the effects of your walking! I am finally getting to do some good hill work, so I can get some use out of my new blue, cork wedges

Roxy, wow! That’s a remarkable shave off of your time. I hope things are better your way. You sound like you were going through a rough patch.

LionQueen, good to hear about your exercise. How are you doing with your 10K steps?

OGF - 20! That makes me SO happy that you are back into your groove. That’s an extraordinary number for having been otherwise occupied for so many weeks.:026:

Hi, Ruthio! So pleased to hear you had a nice getaway. I am sure your walking group missed you!

Cedronella , your story about running with the postman tickled me no end because I am often a frightening mess by then end of my run. I would run with a bag over my head, but it makes it hard to run straight lines. :043:

Beseoker, you have a fine walking companion there! I happen to have one of my own. She would much rather chase a frisbee than go on a leash walk. All she wants to do is…run!

That sounds really interesting work you have going on there with those telescopic adventures, Suzie but Good Heavens, that altitude would definitely affect me. I get giddy enough in the gym as it is!

Wish I’d never posted those photos - they look awful btw!

Meanwhile it was a nice little mix for me today. All boxes ticked…

Great little session, thanks for reading

You gave your body an around the gym trip today, Floydy. Nicely done! As hard as it is to come back from a vacation, it does feel good to get back into a fitness routine. Great job!

I am feeling fortunate to be part of these pioneering explorations all done in cool air-conditioned rooms on tropical islands. The running seems to be the key, though some people are just more genetically prone to the effects of altitude.

My running today was cut short, but what I ran felt great. Surprisingly, the trade winds that blow year-round here keep the temperature and humidity in tolerable ranges even in the mid-afternoon. Running among the ti and ginger, bamboo and hibiscus, orchids and the o’hia lehua is such a feast for the eyes that burning muscles and heaving lungs of my poor old aging body hardly even notices…or mostly notices, but doesn’t mind.

Hi

Naff all for me at the moment, I am on a Meds change, so the pain is horrendous.

I am one day in to the taking nothing at all. only another six days to go before the new ones, only 4 a day instead of 17.

I am still packing up the house but slowly, but it is exercise, of a sort.

I am also on a 800 calorie a day diet.

Worth it in the end.

Is it your jaw and ear that are still giving you so much pain, Swimfeeders?

Moving is hard work for anyone. Take care, but I know this is an exciting new chapter for you. What’s going on with the aquarium and its creatures?

Why are you going so low on calories? You need to keep your strength up and make sure you are getting enough nutrition to keep building those muscles and let your body continue to to heal ;-).

Good luck with the new meds!

Sounds like a decent run Surfermom, despite the tough conditions. It just so happens that I’ve got a Hibiscus in my garden and it does pretty well, although it’s the first to lose its leaves in Autumn, and the last to grow them in spring.

You would have thought that there wouldn’t be much left to explore in space, as the stars (sorry Suns) have been in the same’ish place for millions of years, even I know my way around the sky in the Northern Hemisphere…

So anyway, back here in Yorkshire, the strong wind has been making a terrible nuisance of itself, humidity was at 53%…probably not very notable by Hawaii standards, but together with temperatures of 20*C at six thirty this morning, it made running very laboured (I can understand your plight Surfermom)…

I feel like a new runner all over again just lately, and after walking the first half mile I was up on my toes and cautiously taking my first few steps jogging while observing some playful rabbits at the bottom of the field. At this pace even the young ones could easily outrun me. My style felt awkward and stiff as I passed through the housing estate, although I felt no pain coming from my piriformis, I was acutely aware of its existence…

I entered the wood on a decent hard packed earth path, at either side the foliage threatened to engulf this narrow walkway. I brushed through the taller species that had grown too high for its own good and sagged over the path barring my way. It’s a good job its not wet I thought as I left the woods and joined a tarmac cycle path that led me to the side of the main road. I had run all of the last mile, and as I took my place running alongside queueing traffic I resigned myself to the fact that walking would be out of the question for the next mile and a half, with so many spectators, and me dressed like Mo Farrah.

It was with much relief that I turned into the quiet backstreet that leads back out into the country. To be rid of the constant zoom of passing vehicles, the smell of the occasional exhaust fumes, and the comforting thought that I could walk if I wanted. I passed the last of the houses and proceeded through a small metal kissing gate onto the lane. I resisted the temptation to walk, even though sweat trickled down my forehead and breathing became laboured. I had unknowingly increased my pace to that of a seasoned runner and I was not yet ready for such an expenditure of energy, so I returned once again to the comfortable lumbering pace that I knew would get me home.

Its funny how time and distance seem to pass by so quickly when running in the quiet of mother natures bosom, along the leafy lanes with nothing for company except birdsong and the promise of a race from the odd squirrel or rabbit caught napping in the warm sunshine. But how slow time and distance pass when jogging alongside the main road with a hundred vehicles in convoy on their way to a day at the office or factory…

My house is just a stones throw from the end of the lane, and it was with almost disappointment that I jogged into the drive and stopped the watch. Another five miles and an exceptional time (for me anyway at this point in my comeback) sixty two minutes today, and the comfort of knowing that running will continue…

On a few days I have done upwards of 20,000 according to my pedometer. The dog could do it several tines over.

I tease my daughter when she is going for a 5km run. I do more than double that every day I tell her… She’s in her forties, I’m in my seventies…

Lovely dogs. Mine is off the lead and walks or rather canters here sniffing, peeing, chasing squirrels, so covers several times the distance I do.

Besoeker, with those distances, do you find yourself having to increase your caloric intake to maintain your weight? I have to say that with your daughter doing 5Ks in her forties, your family is very squared away when it comes to having a healthy lifestyle.

OGF, I have to tell you that you sound fantastic! What an outstanding report of a very successful run, I enjoyed every step and imagine that you must feel very accomplished. Are you breaking out the party hats? You should. It’s been quite a summer!

Now as for the running here, I decided to visit the lava beds. Whenever I am over here, I take a few days to run the smooth, folded pahoehoe lava for strength and agility training. Not only is it good for the knees it’s good for coordination, along with the slowing reaction time of…well…aging .

Before the hazy vog from the smoke and water vapor from the active fissures on the other side of the island clouded the skies and the sun made running the beds impossibly hot, I took off running parallel to the road with my GPS ticking. With more jogging than running and more hopping than jogging, I picked my way across the field formed in 1985 but was still stripped of vegetation. Only at the halfway mark did I stop to take in the magnificent emptiness around me - the vast new land, the rugged landscape, and the subtle difference in the textures and shapes.

Still huffing and puffing, I realized that I was also in one of those rare moments and places in which there is utter silence. So, I held my breath - and listened. What a pure moment! I took a breath and held it again…enjoying every second. When I had had my fill of looking around, I turned around and started weaving my way back. Hopping to a flat spot to the left, jogging a few steps forward, stretching my stride with a leap to the right…

What a magnificent planet! What fun it is to be alive!

https://image.ibb.co/hP3FfJ/Lava_beds.jpg

Suzie - that looks like another world on that photo. How fantastic it is to be running yourself around landscapes like that. Wonderful!

Bob - We told you that you’d be back at it eventually mate, didn’t we? I’m very pleased for you performing like the old Fox we used to know and love. Keep at it matey.

Besoeker - love the doggy photos. I’m sure a breed like that gets your pedometer racing through those digital digits!

And Swimmy - You’re doing what you can bud under the circumstances. Moving house is exercise enough mate. Just take things easy and rest often if it gets too hectic bud.

I woke up this afternoon feeling very tired, nauseous and quite dizzy. I’ve been feeling this way on and off for a number of weeks and I think it’s time I got myself checked out. I hope to God that I haven’t succumbed to diabetes as these symptoms appear to indicate. I have been recently weening myself off sugar and sweeteners, and I’m alternatively wondering if it’s milk that’s causing the problem as I wake up with a sickly feeling if I have cereal for breakfast. Maybe it’s tap water I dunno. So until I get to the bottom of this with a visit to the doc, I’ll play it by ear but be watching my diet very closely. But oddly, I felt great while I was on holiday…perhaps I’m just allergic to work!

So with this aura of really not being ‘with it’ today I struggled through a very tough session with an array of what can only be called as a hotch-potch routine of exercises. And despite my feeling groggy throughout I somehow landed a post-two-hour session. I can’t train tomorrow, so I’ve combined much of today’s ‘strength’ session with a new “100-Rep” extravaganza of a notion I had pencilled in for Saturday mornings. Yes, it’s a mad, crackpot idea but then what would a Floydy training routine be if it wasn’t?

Friday, 15 June ‘18:
(All weights in kgs)

DB bench press, 15° incline:
10x24’s, 10x24’x, 6x28’s, 6x30’s, 3x32’s

Smith flat bench press:
8x50, 5x70, 3x75

50x30, 30x30, 20x30 = 100 reps
*Following the basic sets with 100 reps more or less without a break killed my lower pecs. Only one thing for it then…attack the pec dec:

Pec dec:
30x30, 30x30, 20x30, 20x30 = 100 reps

Single DB press, flat bench:

Barbell forearm reverse curl, standing:
20x15, 20x15

Ab crunch:
60x35, 40x35, 35x35, 30x35, 20x35, 15x35 = 200 reps
*Very probably the most ab crunches I’ve ever done at once. I may have a slight podge but my abs are pretty solid underneath!

Time 2hr. 20 mins.

Not too bad for a 53-y.o. who was feeling totally crap!

Legs Sunday.
Thanks for reading

Sorry to hear that you have been feeling under the weather Floydy, and I hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about…

Thanks for your nice compliment Surfermom, there is still a long way to go but you, probably know better than anyone else, know what it means to be able to let go and run free…

I managed to put an extra five miles in this morning, so it’s going to be another twenty mile week…

I saw a landscape like the one you posted when we visited Lanzarote, but unfortunately they wouldn’t let us get off the bus…:frowning:

I don’t know what it is, Bob, but I’m feeling great tonight for some reason.

Floydy, you are wise to be following up on those synptoms. It’s probably nothing to worry about, but it’s so much better when you hear that from a doctor! OGF! Yay! You probably managed more miles than I did this week.

Last night with the stars. Always bittersweet leaving here, but I’m eager to get back to all the good things of home, including a fitness routine that doesn’t include coconut drinks.

I would write more descriptively, but with nothing more than an iPhone with a low battery and my faithful rental board on a golden beach, I’ll just report that I spent this last day blissfully surfing the beautiful Pacific…and only a few of my wipeouts were hideous to be newsworthy . Aloha, y’all :048:

Floydy I wonder if you are suffering from dehydration? The amount of intense work you put into each exercise must put you at risk. I have to drink at least 2pints of water or similar a day or I begin to get headaches and feel sick.

I love to hear how different people keep fit and active it always inspires me to make the effort too.

SM, you capture something so significant and yet so elusive to many- with a clarity that almost knocks me off my chair. I wish you would do an audio of your descriptions I bet it would be so relaxing to listen to. That’s a compliment btw not me saying you would put us to sleep:-p

Well my exercise this week off work has been laying a small patio area in full blazing sun. When I say I, I of course mean us:cool: Mixing cement and lugging slabs and stones into place have almost finished me off. Today is a rest day…cooking full roast for son and DIL.

Good to hear you’re on the ‘up’ Floydy, it’s hard to keep a good man down…:-D…I have to disagree with Surfermom though…Doctors are generally rubbish…:018:…If they can’t issue you tablets, they pass you on to somebody else who may or may not know what is wrong with you, that’s if they’ve got the time to listen…

When I was forty’ish I suffered an injury much the same as I have now, so I went to see my GP. He asked me how old I was and then Suggested that at my age I should be considering not running so far and slowing down…:surprised:

Since that encounter with the Doctor, I broke my previous best time for the marathon (3 hours) the Lyke Wake Race (42 miles on the fell in 6 hours) and the Bullock Smithy (56 miles on the fell carrying the compulsory safety gear in 10 hours) I also completed a charity run of 110 miles (The Cleveland Way) over the bank holiday weekend…:038: Or I could have taken his advice, stopped running and watched boxed sets of ‘Love Thy Neighbour’…My Doctor died last year, and I’m still running…

Surfermom, so good to hear from you despite your failing phone and having to get ‘Your money’s worth’ out of your rental…:039: We (me) all understand your plight and wish there was something we could do to help…

Safe journey home, where you can shake the sand from your running shoes and dream about your encounter with other galaxies… Suffice to say…at the end of the day this is the only one that matters…

PS:- I’m only joking…and I’ve missed you…

My cousin’s husband is in his sixties and still runs marathons. He has done all continents. Antartic and Peru earlier this year plus a few local events.

Good going that Besoeker, I’m 68 in three weeks and had it not been for an untimely Heart Attack in 2004 I’d still be doing them myself, but unfortunately, even though I feel up to it, my family are not of the same opinion, so I just run local now… I did manage to blast round 36 full marathons though including Snowdon…

Who needs a mobile phone when they can occupy their time watching the beautiful sky at night, Suzie? Hope you got things sorted though

Wow, that’s extensive exercise enough for you, Cedronella. All that lifting slabs and mixing cement is no easy task, I bet it looks very nice. Photo please?

Bob, all - Doctors very often know very little as you say. Each patient’s case is going to be different and very often they will generalise and be very swift to bang out a prescription (just a couple of weeks ago they told me to get some rubbish ear fluid I’ve had time and time again; I threw the note away).

Cedronella
, I typically go through a good two litres of water on a gym session as intensive as Friday’s was, I drink plenty of water and squash at home and at work too, so I’ve got the possible dehydration issue well covered, but thanks, it’s something to rule out

Bob - Again, with your doctor once saying to you to quit the running…why on earth do they want to discourage anybody from exercising? But they do…
…And I’m booked in for this Thursday btw with a doctor I trust. No doubt I’ll get the tired old adage of “height vs. weight” being a judge of what is overweight or not. They have no idea whatsoever about people who are different builds have they? The last doctor I saw said I needed to lose quite a “lot of belly fat” until he prodded me around my midriff and was surprised it was all muscle there! At 53, I’m no freak of nature anymore but I do still hold a lot of muscle and the times I have to explain that the NHS system isn’t a true judge of obesity. It makes me annoyed quite frankly, more so that I’m always wasting my time visiting the docs at all.
But I digress, since late last week I’ve been feeling fine, even after yesterday’s few pints I woke up this morning with no issues. But the sugar is gone too now, the way of the sweeteners did and that leaves just milk. Thing is, my digestion is fine so I can’t see lactose being an issue either.
Best to get some bloods done, that may be the only solution!

Right, to the training…

My usual 25-minute leg session this morning, which takes half an hour tops. Though I don’t do any slacking with that…

Sunday, 17 June ‘18:
(All weights in kgs)

Sled press:
100x100, 50x140, 26x200
*That last set at 200kgs was a bit of a grueller to say the least.

Seated ham curls:
50x40, 25x50, 12x60, 30x35

Adductor:
30x60

Abductor:
25x60

Ab crunch:
50x35

Incline press:
50x150
*Normally I would do this exercise first, being the heaviest but I simply could not get on the bloody thing until the last minute, hence the single set. Doesn’t matter, the work had been done on the sled if nothing else/

Time 25 mins.

Legs pumped up suitably once more! Back tomorrow.

Thanks for reading.
