The federal government reported on Friday that there have been 483 confirmed cases of measles across 20 US jurisdictions so far this year, with the largest outbreak in Texas, and 70 people across the nation needing to be hospitalized.
That compares with 285 cases of measles in the US for the whole of 2024. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on its website that 97% of the confirmed cases this year so far involved people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccine status was unknown – and 75% of the cases this year have affected people under the age of 19.
The CDC said that there had been one death confirmed from measles this year and one under investigation as connected to the viral infection.
Some children are suffering complications including liver damage because they have been given huge doses of vitamin A at home, without medical supervision, a therapeutic idea promoted by vaccines skeptics.
My wife and I got vaccinated against measles last week along with covid boosters.
Good luck, your head of the US health department has often voiced concerns about all vaccinations. I would expect the measles outbreak to get a lot worse. Measles can be fatal. This (close to) government sponsored anti-vaccination is going to kill people, most likely children.
You can bet that he got his vaccination, though, just like with covid. He says one thing and does something else. He just wants confirmation of the power he has over his followers, and when they show their loyalty by forgoing vaccinations, and in some cases allowing their children to get sick and even die, that’s the ultimate display of loyalty.
That does appear to be true. I also suspect that he will repeat anything that he views as something his supporters want to hear - regardless of the cost or impact. He wants to provide them with positive affirmation of their views so that they think that he thinks like them.
And they are dumb enough to go along with it.
You make a fair point. Especially as the causes of the unvaccinated population in many countries are nothing to do with Trump. There are plenty well ahead in the queue for that accolade. And I recall that back in 2019 when there was a previous measles outbreak in the US, then Trump was actually supportive of people getting vaccinated. Credit where credit is due.
So why does this vaccination fear-mongering continue? I don’t know about the US but in France it is illegal for children to attend schools if they are not fully vaccinated. To me that makes sense - unvaccinated children create a risk to themselves and others so should not be mingling with lots of other children for long periods in closed rooms.
If you have not noticed RFK jnr statements and promotion against vaccines then you are intentionally ignoring them. There really is no other reason to think he is pro–vaccine. He is anti-vaccination and his actions and statements will result in children dying. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(24)02603-5/fulltext
His Children’s Health Defense organisation openly promotes anti-vaccination claims. It makes false links between poor health and vaccination.
His organisation has used legal action to limit vaccinations.
So how exactly would an unvaccinated child create a risk to other children?
If the other children have been vaccinated they have nothing to fear, but the unvaccinated child should avoid the vaccinated ones because if the vaccines work, these vaccinated children could carry the virus without symptoms?
So you believe that the establishment can inject chemicals into a person by law Lincs? Regardless of that persons choice?
Why don’t we burn all the books and restrict what can be posted on the internet…Wait a minute!..
As we know from covid, no vaccine is 100% perfect or 100% effective. It hugely inhibits the spread of a disease and it most often greatly reduces the severity of a disease if caught. Plus, as you point out, even vaccinated children contract and spread the disease. So a parent who decides not to vaccinate their child against the common killer diseases, and sends their unvaccinated child to school, greatly increases the risk of a disease spreading, possibly affecting even vaccinated children and creating the environment of mass breakout if there are other vaccinated children at that school or town. Essentially this creates an unneeded, unwanted and avoidable risk.
What if they mandated testing prior to making vaccines available? Same as for any drug.
Or, to take an alternative view, what if some rogue doctor decided to (wait for it) doctor research and skew interpretation of test data to publish a paper that was readily shown to be false. But before that challenge it was made public and many stopped and wondered - maybe this rogue doctor is right?
And you are right, people have the right to determine what goes in and is done to their bodies. But we live in a society and also have a responsibility to others. No decision for stuff like vaccines and diseases can be made in isolation. Most weigh up the risk of getting ill from getting a vaccine (small and remote) against the risk to others if not vaccinated (high and potentially severe) and make a sensible decision.
The alternative is to not get the vaccine and then, as this is the only decent thing to do, to then remove oneself from society. Greatly minimise face-face interactions with anyone (ideally from a distance), don’t visit busy places like shops, doctor waiting rooms, hospitals, schools, transport, etc. To do this to children is terrible and damaging. To push unvaccinated children to busy schools is potentially terrible and damaging.
Nope, did see a single thing about measles being mentioned.
all fifty states in the U.S. mandate immunizations for children in order to enroll in public school, but the specific vaccines required differ from state to state, and various exemptions are available depending on state law.
