Sorry not to have posted any updates lately. The simple truth is that not a lot has changed. My sister has been moved to her own room so she can get some peace. They are monitoring her very closely, day and night. The bleed in her gut has stopped with medication, and her nasal feeding tube has been restored.

The multi-disciplinary meeting outcomes were a) to put a DNR notice in place (no surprise because they’d already said that if she arrested again they wouldn’t be able to restart her heart), b) to put a ceiling on the BP medication (she hasn’t reached that, and her BP is now stable after dropping to 30 sistolic a few days ago.) and c) there’s a ceiling on the antibiotics fighting the sepsis. (Again, she’s not approaching that ceiling yet, even with an increase in a/b stength).

So, she’s still holding on, she’s not in any pain, and remains on life support. We’re all playing a waiting game, and everyone’s still praying for her.

Thank you all once again for your continued support and kindness xx

Another very long update from my nephew this afternoon. They brought his mum out of sedation temporarily for a trial they call a ‘neurological window’ - she responded to commands and they’re happy there’s no brain damage. Now she’s on a lower level of sedation, so that she is doing some of the work and not leaving it all to the ventilator. Her BP support meds are slowly being reduced - one has been halted altogether, and the other reduced and it remains stable.

The infection seems to have halted and the microbiologist will check if the bug is still growing in the blood, and adjust the antibiotics accordingly. The doctor was keen to stress that my sister is still ‘very, very weak and very sick, in ITU where things can go back faster than they go forward’. And so for now the DNR remains in place but will be assessed daily, until and if the team feel she has the best chance of recovering from another CPR event.

They are still all agreed on ‘full active treatment’, so will continue to do everything possible to aid her recovery. The doctor agreed the news was positive, and that whilst they’re only small steps, there is progress in the right direction.

Oh Lord, this really is a rollercoaster! A few days ago the news was so bad and I was ready to let her go, and now… I think I’m actually daring to have hope again. But at the same time, I know tomorrow there could be another severe downward spiral, so I’m holding onto that hope carefully without getting too excited.

That sounds positive @Bathsheba. Small steps in the right direction. These sort of things tend to be like riding a roller coaster. Let’s hope your sister is on the slope to full recovery :hugs:
